Entry: "Savannakhet is Lao's second largest city by terms of population yet is not on the map of most tourists visiting this mythical landlocked country sanwiched between Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and China. Most tourists visiting, are from across the Mekong River from Thailand, passing through from Vietnam or using Savannakhet as a quick one night stop over when crossing from the North to South or South to North of Laos. For me, I was one of the few that was making Savanahkhet my final destination. Fortunately with the building of the Savan Vegas Casino and some government negotiaions, air service was restored about six months ago with 3x weekly service between both Vientianne and Bangkok and Savanahkhet. The direct flight from Thailand was a God send for me as my first trip consisted planes, trains and automobiles.... Ok... so no trains but a taxi, plane, private car, bus and then shuttle. The main purpose of my visit was to assist with the opening grand opening of the casino. Government officials, investors and various VIP's were among the many expected to help officially open the casino. A few Thai pop-stars, whose names I could not recall, performed on a stage outside, while a VIP gala took place right next to it <b>...</b>
