Ceres (Dwarf Planet) Part of Our Inner Solar System
Ceres (Dwarf Planet) Part of Our Inner Solar System
Ceres, minor-planet designation 1 Ceres, is the largest asteroid and the only dwarf planet in the inner Solar System. It is a rock--ice body 950 km (590 mi) in diameter and the smallest identified dwarf planet. It contains about one-third of the mass of the asteroid belt. Discovered on 1 January 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi, it was the first asteroid to be identified, though it was classified as a planet at the time. It is named after Ceres, the Roman goddess of growing plants, the harvest, and motherly love. The Cererian surface is probably a mixture of water ice and various hydrated minerals such as carbonates and clays. It appears to be differentiated into a rocky core and icy mantle, and may harbor an ocean of liquid water under its surface. From Earth, the apparent magnitude of Ceres ranges from 6.7 to 9.3, and hence even at its brightest it is still too dim to be seen with the naked eye except under extremely dark skies. The unmanned Dawn spacecraft, launched on 27 September 2007 by NASA, is expected to be the first to explore Ceres after its scheduled arrival there in 2015. After having orbited asteroid 4 Vesta since July 2011, the spacecraft departed about 5 September 2012. Dwarf Planet Ceres May Harbor Life Planet Ceres is a wonderful target for exploration but let's not build expectations too high. NASA's Dawn is going to orbit, not go drilling for life. Does Planet Ceres have Life. NASA Hubble Space Telescope color image of "Planet Ceres", the largest object in the asteroid belt. In the frenzy to find life elsewhere in the solar system, Mars or the outer gas giant planets' active moons are usually the odds-on favorites. But the "dwarf planet Ceres", the largest and most massive body in the Main Asteroid Belt, may have evolved some form of thermophilic subsurface bacteria, researchers now say. Is Planet Ceres Habitable At almost 1000 kms in diameter, icy Ceres is thought to be still warm enough inside to provide clement conditions for at least some sort of bacterial life. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has determined that Planet Ceres is likely to be differentiated. Researchers stress that Ceres is not an asteroid but, in fact, an intact, small terrestrial-like icy planet. Ceres likely had an environment that could have supported life; including internal heat and a salty liquid water ocean, said a planetary physicist Ceres probably has a greater percentage of water than Mars, Ceres may even have a weak atmosphere. McCord says life may even exist today in a residual, liquid ocean near the top of the Planet Ceres' silicate core. Although Swarf Planet Ceres doesn't have molten magma, there is heat inside, said Russell. So, I wouldn't rule out life. NASA's Dawn mission draws closer to its encounter with the dwarf planet Ceres in early 2015, excitement continues to mount for scientists looking forward to what the spacecraft might observe Planet Ceres is one of only a few places where we've found carbonates. Rivkin said. "I think other than Earth and Mars, it's Planet Ceres.". We're pretty sure we don't have meteorites like Comet ISON from Planet Ceres itself. Dwarf planet Ceres 'spewing water vapour' - This is REAL Genius
Observations by the Herschel Space Observatory have found two plumes of water jetting off the surface of Ceres, the smallest dwarf planet, and largest asteroid, in the solar system. The discovery adds to the number of watery bodies in near space, but scientists don't yet know why it's bubbling away. Water Vapor Plumes Found On Dwarf Planet Ceres - HD
The discovery is the first evidence of water in the asteroid belt and could help scientists understand how water is distributed within our solar system. Water vapor has been detected around Ceres, one of the largest asteroids in our solar system, by the European Space Agency's infrared Herschel space telescope before it was decommissioned last year. Ceres, now classified as a dwarf planet, has long been thought to have rocky core and an icy outer layer. While there is no certainty as to where this water is coming from, the ESA suggests this could be due to the sublimation of ice -- the melting of ice from solid state directly to vapor form. The quantity of gas being ejected is not large -- 13 pounds every second -- but is undeniably water vapor. "This is the first time that water has been detected in the asteroid belt, and provides proof that Ceres has an icy surface and an atmosphere," said Michael Küppers of the ESA. The discovery has been reported in the journal Nature. While the telescope was unable to get a clear image of Ceres, scientists were able confirm the presence of water vapor by observing variations in the water signal around the dwarf planet. They believe that the water is coming from the dark colored regions of the surface of Ceres. The presence of water vapor in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter will give scientists an understanding of the evolution of the solar system and the distribution of water within it. Scientists will be able to get a better view of Ceres come 2015, when NASA's Dawn mission will provide up-close mapping of its surface. Credit: newsy- published: 23 Jan 2014

Space Engine 0.9.7.1 Update - Dwarf Planet Ceres & M82 Supernova
Support Space Engine at http://en.spaceengine.org We're back in the free 3-D universe simulator software called Space Engine to check out what improvements there are to find in the latest 0.9.7.1 update. The dwarf planet Ceres has recently been discovered to be sending jets of water vapor into space, hinting at the existence of sub-surface liquid water. Then we visit M82, the "Cigar" galaxy, home to the recent supernova that was detected on January 21st, 2014. Finally we stop by M99, a spiral galaxy which today might have set off its own supernova! Dwarf planet Ceres found to be blasting water vapor into space
Dwarf planet Ceres found to be blasting water vapor into space
A major discovery has been made in the asteroid belt -- the dwarf planet Ceres is blasting water vapor into space. Such a finding has been called "unequivocal" by the researchers, according to a paper published in Nature. This is a first time water vapor has been found from an object within the asteroid belt, and shows Ceres has both an atmosphere and an icy surface. The water vapor is the result of its icy stores being heated by the sun, resulting in the plumes that have been detected. Ceres, which is the closest dwarf planet to Earth, was discovered in 1801, and next year we'll get the first-ever up-close-and-personal look at our small neighbor. NASA's Dawn will enter Ceres' orbit next February. Once there, Dawn will map the planet's geology in high-resolution, as well as proving a look at its surface chemistry. This makes the water vapor discovery particularly exciting. Even better, research into the water plumes shows the dwarf planet may have some sort of seasonal activity, with water activity not being detected every time -- or, possibly, cryptovolcanoes, speculation Dawn will lay to rest next year. Said the ESA's Goran Pilbratt: "Since Ceres constitutes about one fifth of the total mass of asteroid belt, this finding is important not only for the study of small solar system bodies in general, but also for learning more about the origin of water on Earth."- published: 22 Jan 2014
