Samburu Savings
Like most pastoralist communities, the Samburu people have widely been viewed as destitute people, sticking out a begging bowl to their fellow countrymen for even the most basic of commodities. But you might want to know that most members of this community make huge sums of money from animal trade. However, they remain poor millionaires as archaic saving methods, insecurity and illiteracy conspire to deny them better living standards. Franklin Macharia reports.

LEMARTIS Camp 2011
What is unique about staying at Lemarti's Camp is experiencing the "Rites of Passage" safari that Lemarti has crafted. It is an experience unparalleled in East Africa today. No safari vehicles or armed guards here. Guests quite literally walk into the wilderness with Samburu warriors armed only with their traditional weapons, their sharp senses and generations of knowledge. These gentle tribesmen will talk with you about their ways, connect you with amazing wildlife and take you into a moment in time that is both authentic and other worldly. Game viewing, guided walks, tracking big game on foot, ornithological treats, camel trekking, high altitude running, and authentic cultural experiences that are unparalleled in Africa today, all await. Be included in the community of Koija, visit the women's groups, get an invitation to a local homestead, harvest honey with the elders on the river banks and attend secret ceremonies in the area. ACCOMMODATION Lemartis' Camp is an unforgettable safari hideaway in Kenya's breathtaking Northern Laikipia Plateau, one of the last frontiers of virgin wilderness and home to the majestic Samburu people. The twist here is that while the local Samburu community owns the land, the camp itself was built and run by local Samburu guide, Loyapan Lemarti and his Kenyan-based fashion designer wife, Anna Trzebinski. This unlikely duo met on safari -- he was her guide -- and were later married. Their dream camp emerged, nestled in an oasis in a ...

Bronze Africa - Samburu Toto
I was given a beautiful book on the Samburu by Coco Hellerman out of Santa Fe and I became enthralled by these people. I believe that I may have captured what I wanted out of this piece. I have a young boy herding the calves alert to his surroundings and his duty while his charge could care less.

Kenya - Mt Kenya & Samburu NP
This is the first part of my journey to Kenya and Tanzania. We started at the area of mount Kenya which unfortunately happened to be shielded by clouds most of the time. But the group of black and white colobus monkeys, who lived near our campsite, made a good show.
The MauMau caves we visited were a hiding place for the freedom fighters, which the British army bombed during the independence war. Watching the quite scenery it was difficult to imagine about 300 people died in it.
The next day we went to the Samburu NP. A hot and dry area, but with a beautiful landscape. Before entering the NP we visited a community of the Samburu. They are traditional living nomads who only have their cattle. It was quite amazing to see of how little they could life. It makes you think the way you life yourself.
The wildlife in the Samburu NP was great. In the first game drive we already saw most of the Samburu five including the Grevy Zebra, Gerenuk, Beisa, Somalian Ostrich and Reticulated Giraffe. These are animals specific for this area of Africa. It was really fun to see all the animals in live action you normally only see at Animal planet and this was just the first park we visited.
