Residents in a small village in
China's Hubei Province have been cut off from the outside world by recent floods that destroyed their bridge across the river. Buying necessities has now become a marathon trip for the villagers
.
In the village of Zuogang in China's Hubei Province, the only link to the outside world is the bridge. And now the bridge has collapsed -- destroyed by the recent floods.
Debris from landslides litters the road on the way to villager Li Juhua's home.
Li's house was partially destroyed by the rain and sudden landslides, and while the knee-deep mud has been cleared away, she can't go shopping for necessities because the bridge collapsed.
[Li Juhua,
Village Resident]:
"If the bridge cannot be repaired soon, we will be trapped here."
For the 2,
300 villagers, buying daily necessities has become a very long trip. They now have to take a hill road to the neighboring town, which takes several hours.
For the local village committee, there is no easy solution.
[Zuo
Shihe,
Head of Zuogang
Villagers Committee]:
"The bridge is broken now, and at the moment, the problem is we don't have any way to ship in materials to build a simple, temporary bridge, because of the destroyed roads."
China's state-run
Xinhua News Agency says the rains have left at least 105 people dead and 65 people missing.
The torrential downpours, which have battered previously drought-stricken sections of
China since Monday, have forced about 88,
000 people to evacuate their homes.
