Walkin' in the Wind: People blown over in streets as Storm Ivar hits Norway
People christmas shopping in downtown Aalesund had troubles crossing the street today. The storm "Ivar" was blowing things and people around and police had to assist people in moving around. One man blew off the sidewalk and into the street in an intersection downtown Aalesund earlier. An ambulance was required and the police is now present in the streets, to follow the development and help out where needed. The storm is continuing towards Trondelag where 20 000 people now have lost power, and buses and boats are suspended. The police are also urging people to stay away from the downtown area in Trondheim. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 13 Dec 2013

And, in an apparent bid to defuse tensions, President Viktor Yanukovich, who rejected an EU trade deal in favour of closer ties with Russia, said he would still do all in his power to speed up Ukraine's moves towards the EU. Some are unconvinced. "This is not the plan of the opposition" said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who leads the party of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. "This is the plan of the Ukrainian people to reinstall democracy in my country. People ask for justice. As a first step, we urge the government of Ukraine to resign and we claim for snap elections." Coming a day after a police crackdown on protesters in Independence Square, Sunday's rally was by far the biggest seen in Kyiv since the Orange Revolution nine years ago. "He's my son," said one demonstrator carrying a small boy on his shoulders. "Today we are fighting for him. And he is taking part in one of the most important events in Ukraine's history." "I took part in the Orange Revolution in 2004," another man added. "Then, like many others, I was disappointed with the revolution. For nine years, I have been apathetic about politics and a week ago I did not take part in rallies. But after the peaceful demonstration was broken up with batons, I realised that I should not remain on the sidelines because the situation could become worse." He passed away in his home city of Izhevsk near the Ural mountains, where his gun is still made, reports Russian state news agency Itar-Tass.* His name became iconic, like Colt or Gatling before him, because of an instrument of death; the iconic AK-47 assault rifle, better known as the Kalashnikov. Mikhail Kalashnikov was born in 1919 in Kouria, the 17th of 19 children in a Kulak farming family. Deported by Stalin, who seized the land for collectivisation, little Mikhail lived in Siberia until age 11. He became a tank driver and was injured in 1941 as the Germans invaded. Convalescing in hospital he doodled a small, rapid, and reliable assault rifle. The state picked up on his design and began production of the Avtomat Kalashnikova in 1947 in the Ijmach factory in Izhevsk, in the Ural mountains. It was a huge success. More than 100 million are thought to be in use around the world today. Kalashnikov said: "Everything that is complicated is useless; everything useful is simple. That's always been my motto." His assault rifle has become Russia's most famous brand, synonymous with 'made in Russia', and a quality standard so recognised it has been much imitated and forged. The self-taught engineer complained about this on a visit to the late Hugo Chavez. "There are countries that make Kalashnikov guns without licence. That is plain theft. It is completely illegal," he said. Kalashnikov never felt responsible for unlawful or terrorist acts committed by men using his weapon. That was the fault of others, he repeated. "Any weapon should only be in the hands of armies to defend their countries, and the fact that there are so many weapons around has nothing to do with the designer. It is the fault of the politicians." But he was proud of the legendary status accorded his creation. He claimed even the Americans would have preferred it in Vietnam. "I saw American soldiers throwing away their M16 rifles and picking up the soviet AK-47 rifles. But it did not stop there. I (saw) it in Iraq again. In bad (climate) conditions, the M16 rifle does not work properly." Topless against Putin: Femen activists protest in Brussels
Activists from the women's rights group, FEMEN, have staged a topless protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is in the Belgian capital for talks with EU officials. Two protesters bared all in the Schuman district of Brussels, which is home to the European institutions. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 28 Jan 2014

ESA Euronews - Rosetta: The Comet Hunter Awakes
The exploits of comet-hunting spacecraft Rosetta are generating intense interest as it speeds towards a dramatic climax this autumn. The craft will catch up with comet 67p/Churyumov--Gerasimenko, fly alongside, and put a lander on its surface. Throughout this fantastic voyage, Euronews will have special access to the engineers and scientists who are making it happen. On 20th January Rosetta woke up from two and a half years of hibernation. It was a moment of extreme tension for everyone at ESA's European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. Strained, nervous faces searched for a signal from a probe in deep space. After some 45 minutes of anxiety the all-important first signal came through. The scientists burst into energetic applause.- published: 31 Jan 2014
