This is Penataran Temple, the biggest temple complex in East Java, located on the southwestern slope of Mount Kelud, about 12 kilometers north of Blitar. The buildings and reliefs of the temple looked relatively in good condition. Some buildings left in the complex are among others tersisa Pendopo Teras, Angka Tahun Temple, Naga Temple, and Induk Temple. The temple has many mysterious things, like the statue of Dwarapala at the entrance. The shape really looks like those that are usually found in the Mayan culture in America. There is also some cactus-like stone carvings, while we all know that this kind of plant also live in America. Unusually-clothed squads, like the Aztec or Mayan, also exists in the temple built in Kadiri era. Despite those mysteries, the temple was the favorite place of the King of Majapahit, Hayam Wuruk. In the temple, Hayam Wuruk worshipped Sang Hyang Acalapati, the god of mountain resided on Kelud. It is mentioned in Kakawin Negarakertagama that “...he went to pray in front of Hyang Acalapati. After that, he usually went to Blitar, Jinur, to visit some other mountains..." An archeologist from Malang State University, Dwi Cahyono, said that Penataran temple was built as the means to avert Kelud's wrath. The edifices proves that ancient society realized that they were living in a disaster zone. It is obviously shown from one of the fragments on the relief in the main temple. On the first terrace, the story of Ramayana was carved, while on the second was the story of Kresnayana. Kresna dan Rama in the mythology of Hindhuism are considered as the liberator of the people from fear and disasters. On the relief of Kresnayana, there is a picture of flaming fire, which was interpreted as Kelud's eruption Kelud. It is also depicted that Kalayawana was chasing Kresna, and in the chase, he stepped on a priest. The priest was raging, raising his hand, bursting fire, and burn Kalayawana and his men.
