Andrew + Kate
9.11.10
Andrew and Kate are amazing people, who make a perfect couple, and they had the most beautiful Irish Catholic wedding! I started with the ladies at the Brian Graham Salon downtown and then swung over to St Louis Park to catch Andrew starting his day at their home. We then all made our way to the Church of the Incarnation, stopped for pictures at the stone arch bridge and then ended the day at Minikahda.
What I loved most about their wedding day were the special touches Andrew and Kate added to really make this day their own. Right after the first kiss bagpipes emerged from the sacristy, filling the church with music and leading the newly married couple out. Another example is at every seat for dinner was a lottery scratch off and a penny (luck of the Irish). So cool. In addition to these touches and more, their friends and family played a huge role in celebrating them and making this day a blast. This really comes out in the video, and especially during the reception! It was really the perfect day for the perfect couple. My favorite moment was right after the ceremony as everyone was getting lined up for pictures I noticed that Kate and Andrew had snuck away by themselves in the wings of the church. They were laughing, crying, and making out. What an awesome way to start their lives together! Congrats Kate and Andrew!

Mesen (B) Irish Peace Tower (English subtitles)
Shot with the Canon EF 10-22mm f3.5-5.6 and the EF 70-210mm f4
Oh, uh, I included a cameo-appearance of myself in it, totally unprofessional, of course!
A striking image: in 1998 the British Queen Elisabeth II and the Irish president Mary McAleese stood side by side for the inauguration of the Island Of Ireland Peace Park in Mesen/Messines, Belgium. Perhaps even more remarkable is that Irish Catholics and Protestants were fighting here side by side against a common enemy, the Germans, during the Battle of Messines in 1917. All this, while in Ireland in 1916 the Irish-British conflict had erupted violently. During the 20th century, the northern part of Ireland would witness one of the most violent civil wars in Europe ever.
So the quietness and rest of these images, filmed on an early summer evening, is misleading. Here in Mesen, there was heavy fighting too, and an estimated 25 thousand Irish soldiers lost their lives on these battlefields.
To great relief, by the end of the 20th century, peace came to Ireland, and this is what the Irish tower symbolizes. The tower was built with stones from a British barracks in Tipperary, burnt down during the conflict. The design of the tower is such that sunlight only enters the tower on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - armistice.

Máthair, Irish for Mother, is an exploration of the religious and cultural rituals experienced firsthand by filmmaker Kathryn Ferguson. This film, prompted by and realised through a holy pilgrimage with her mother, recognizes and celebrates the need to revisit the rituals of the artist's past. Máthair presents a hyperreal vision of Ireland conveyed through patterns of thought, memory and behaviour that map the artist’s own construction of her homeland.
Ritual #1: Feis (My Mother)
The ritualistic and rhythmic structures of the weekly Catholic Mass and traditional Irish dance are intertwined in this piece to invite reflection on the complex of patterns that connect the two. The hypnotic sounds integral to both practices are presented in unison with structured performative scenes that imply a commonality of emotional and creative intention. Juxtaposing religious impulse with visceral expression, this first movement balances the competing intentions of immersive action against distraction from thought.
Ritual #2: Lament (Motherland)
The tradition of keening, an ancient vocal lament for the dead, reflects a deep sorrow rooted within Irish culture and arts. Irish folklore speaks of funeral parties rowing in silence across the water at Assaroe in County Donegal, only to begin the haunting sounds of the keening when a particular site is reached. Moving from the personal ritualistic elements of the first movement, this second lament ties together customs surrounding death and the concomitant visualisation of loss through mourning practice, forging a link between place and personhood.
Ritual #3: Marian (Mother Mary)
The conflict between the commodification of the idea of the saint and the persisting phenomena of the apparition of the Mother Mary are brought to light in this final piece in the cycle. Marian stands as the culmination of observations made while journeying between pilgrimage sites in Ireland. Focusing in particular on the site at Knock in West Ireland, this movement contrasts the sanctity of the location with the gaudy objects sold en masse to the public as evidence of their visit. The implications of merchandising the miraculous are left suspended in uncertainty.
