In Historic Victory for Community Radio, FCC Puts 1,000 Low-Power FM Frequencies Up For Grabs-DM
- In a major victory for the community radio movement after a 15-year campaign, the Federal Communications Commission has announced it will soon begin accepting applications for hundreds of new low-power FM radio stations in October. This means nonprofits, labor unions and community groups have a one-time-only chance this year to own a bit of the broadcast airwaves. It is being heralded as "the largest expansion of community radio in United States history." We're joined by two guests: Jeff Rousset, the National Organizer of the Prometheus Radio Project, which has led the campaign to challenge corporate control of the media and open up this space on the dial; and by Ramon Ramirez, the president of PCUN, the largest Latino organization in Oregon. In 2006, Prometheus Radio Project helped PCUN establish the low-power FM station "Movement Radio," which has helped inform farm workers about labor rights, as well as the larger Latino community about immigration reform efforts, health issues, and other community-related topics. The FCC's short application window for new stations will run from October 15 to October 29. "This is a one-shot opportunity," Rousset says. "The work that we do over the next four months will really help shape the course of this country's media landscape for the next 40 years." Roxby Downs, a very remote but vibrant community purpose build in 1988 to service the giant Olympic Dam Mine. They do it different in Roxby Downs, they even support a Community Radio Station - RoxFM. Council don't run the station, but have helped to fund it, accommodate it in their facilities and they have staff that have programs that air on the station. The radio station operates independently. The Community Radio Station is really important and is located in their Community Cultural Centre. Communication through this medium is extremely effective within the community. The Community Radio station is run by a Board of volunteers and so are all the radio programs. On air music is pumped through to the main street. All hosts on the station are volunteers and its like an oasis in the desert. Roxby Council also hosted the Amazing Race during National Youth Week 2013. Both the Council and the Community School put on the Amazing Race. Full day of races with checkpoints matching young people interests and were located throughout the community and covering things of interest to young people from how to have good mental health, be innovative, operate successfully through teamwork and getting to know people/groups in the community eg police, CFS, Council, youth service and health services.. The local Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) plan events and activities to give the young people in Roxby something to do. The YAC were active in helping to stage the Amazing Race and got a lot out of the experience.- published: 14 Oct 2013

Transmitting on 1630 kHz AM with 10 watts of power in North Plainfield, NJ, WPQJ970 went on the air in December 2001 with a Traveler's Information Service (TIS) license, broadcasting weather, traffic, and community information for the town's residents. WPQJ970 has the loudest, clearest signal and most professional-sounding announcements I have ever heard from a TIS station. In the Fall of 2013, WPQJ970 replaced automated NOAA Weather Radio simulcasts with local weather reports, updated daily and recorded by the station's operator and announcer Rich Phoenix, who previously worked for 20 years at commercial radio stations as a DJ, news writer, and engineer. Rich explains, "These days, I work full-time in municipal government.
