Across Europe, NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to scramble in case of suspicious or unannounced flights near the airspace of our Allies. NATO calls this activity Air Policing, which has been an integral part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence for 60 years.
In the Western Balkans, several Allies – including NATO’s newest member countries 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇲🇰North Macedonia – don’t have fighter jets capable of intercepting unsafe air traffic.
To secure the airspace over these countries, other NATO Allies take turns leading air policing missions. In 🇸🇮Slovenia, the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇭🇺Hungarian Air Forces share responsibility, while in 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇦🇱Albania, it’s the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇬🇷Greek Air Forces. In November 2021, the Greek Air Force assumed responsibility for safeguarding North Macedonia’s airspace under the NATO air policing mission umbrella.
Footage includes shots of Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons, Greek Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripens.
In this series, we explore NATO’s five special air policing arrangements to ensure the integrity of NATO’s airspace and the defence of our almost one billion citizens.

Është hera e dytë për këtë javë që ndodh diçka e tillë. Këto tensione në qiell nuk janë të pazakonta, por shihen me shqetësim pasi vijnë në një moment kur tensionet mes Rusisë dhe Perëndimit janë shumë të larta.
Sipas një zyrtari të lartë të inteligjencës perëndimore, nëse Rusia vendos të pushtojë Ukrainën, konflikti mund të përhapet më tej në Europë.
“Të mendosh se lufta mund të zhvillohet vetëm brenda një kombi do të ishte marrëzi,” shtuan ata.
Këto shqetësime u mbështetën edhe nga oficeri më i lartë ushtarak i Britanisë. What is it like to be a soldier on a NATO exercise?
NATO exercises happen all year round – on land, in the air, at sea – with multinational troops from NATO Allies and partner countries. What's it like to be a soldier participating in one of these big exercises? Our video producer documented the experience while embedded with a company of Romanian soldiers on exercise Steadfast Defender 2021.
Exercise Steadfast Defender 2021 was a large-scale NATO exercise, designed to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction. With over 9,000 participants from more than 20 NATO Allies and partners, the exercise tested NATO's ability to deploy large numbers of troops, equipment and supplies rapidly across the Atlantic and Europe.
Prior to filming, NATO videographers tested negative for COVID-19. It was not mandatory for Romanian troops to wear masks outside, as per national government guidance.
Footage includes shots of video producer Jake Tupman interacting with Romanian soldiers and participating in training.

NATO foreign ministers gathered in the Latvian capital, Riga, on Tuesday at the start of a two-day meeting, with troubles to the alliance's east on Russia's border with Ukraine and in Belarus topping the agenda.
The 30-nation alliance remains uncertain of Moscow's aims on Ukraine's borders. Fears of a Russian incursion have grown amid accusations Moscow has deployed tens of thousands of troops and heavy weapons to its neighbor's borders.
"Any future Russian aggression against Ukraine would come at a high price and have serious political and economic consequences for Russia," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He also stressed that Ukraine is not a NATO member and not covered by the alliance's mutual defense pact.
"We need to be prepared for the worst and we need to convey a message to Russia that they should not conduct a military incursion into Ukraine," he said, adding that alliance members could impose sanctions.
Latvia's defense minister, Artis Pabriks, told DW he "shares the concerns" of the US and other NATO allies over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Pabriks also expressed fears about other countries in the region as Russia continues to exert its authority over its neighbors. He said that Moscow "basically controls almost all activities within Belarus" as it seeks to strengthen its influence in the region.
"So that means that we can expect any type of challenge. And we know that Russian political elite is not afraid to use military force when it decides it is to today for purposes," he said.
He added that more should have been done to help Ukraine ward off the threat from Russia.
Pabriks said he would like to integrate Ukraine more, increasing its ties with the European Union, and "engage" with Kyiv over issues such as corruption.

The domain .nato was a top-level domain (TLD) in the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet. The domain was added in the late 1980s by the Network Information Center for the use of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, based on the rationale that none of the then existing top-level domains adequately reflected its status as an international organization. Soon after this addition, however, Paul Mockapetris, the designer of the DNS, suggested to NATO representatives that nato.int would be a better choice. The TLD .int was created for the use of international organizations, and NATO switch to using nato.int. Without use, the TLD nato was deleted in July 1996.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO /ˈneɪtoʊ/; French: Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique Nord; OTAN), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are located in Haren, Brussels, Belgium, where the Supreme Allied Commander also resides. Belgium is one of the 28 member states across North America and Europe, the newest of which, Albania and Croatia, joined in April 2009. An additional 22 countries participate in NATO's Partnership for Peace program, with 15 other countries involved in institutionalized dialogue programmes. The combined military spending of all NATO members constitutes over 70 percent of the global total. Members' defense spending is supposed to amount to 2 percent of GDP.

Across Europe, NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to scramble in case of suspicious or unannounced flights near the airspace of our Allies. NATO calls this activity Air Policing, which has been an integral part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence for 60 years.
In the Western Balkans, several Allies – including NATO’s newest member countries 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇲🇰North Macedonia – don’t have fighter jets capable of intercepting unsafe air traffic.
To secure the airspace over these countries, other NATO Allies take turns leading air policing missions. In 🇸🇮Slovenia, the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇭🇺Hungarian Air Forces share responsibility, while in 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇦🇱Albania, it’s the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇬🇷Greek Air Forces. In November 2021, the Greek Air Force assumed responsibility for safeguarding North Macedonia’s airspace under the NATO air policing mission umbrella.
Footage includes shots of Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons, Greek Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripens.
In this series, we explore NATO’s five special air policing arrangements to ensure the integrity of NATO’s airspace and the defence of our almost one billion citizens.

What is it like to be a soldier on a NATO exercise?
NATO exercises happen all year round – on land, in the air, at sea – with multinational troops from NATO Allies and partner countries. What's it like to be a soldier participating in one of these big exercises? Our video producer documented the experience while embedded with a company of Romanian soldiers on exercise Steadfast Defender 2021.
Exercise Steadfast Defender 2021 was a large-scale NATO exercise, designed to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction. With over 9,000 participants from more than 20 NATO Allies and partners, the exercise tested NATO's ability to deploy large numbers of troops, equipment and supplies rapidly across the Atlantic and Europe.
Prior to filming, NATO videographers tested negative for COVID-19. It was not mandatory for Romanian troops to wear masks outside, as per national government guidance.
Footage includes shots of video producer Jake Tupman interacting with Romanian soldiers and participating in training.

NATO foreign ministers gathered in the Latvian capital, Riga, on Tuesday at the start of a two-day meeting, with troubles to the alliance's east on Russia's border with Ukraine and in Belarus topping the agenda.
The 30-nation alliance remains uncertain of Moscow's aims on Ukraine's borders. Fears of a Russian incursion have grown amid accusations Moscow has deployed tens of thousands of troops and heavy weapons to its neighbor's borders.
"Any future Russian aggression against Ukraine would come at a high price and have serious political and economic consequences for Russia," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He also stressed that Ukraine is not a NATO member and not covered by the alliance's mutual defense pact.
"We need to be prepared for the worst and we need to convey a message to Russia that they should not conduct a military incursion into Ukraine," he said, adding that alliance members could impose sanctions.
Latvia's defense minister, Artis Pabriks, told DW he "shares the concerns" of the US and other NATO allies over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Pabriks also expressed fears about other countries in the region as Russia continues to exert its authority over its neighbors. He said that Moscow "basically controls almost all activities within Belarus" as it seeks to strengthen its influence in the region.
"So that means that we can expect any type of challenge. And we know that Russian political elite is not afraid to use military force when it decides it is to today for purposes," he said.
He added that more should have been done to help Ukraine ward off the threat from Russia.
Pabriks said he would like to integrate Ukraine more, increasing its ties with the European Union, and "engage" with Kyiv over issues such as corruption.

Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz hat bei seinem Antrittsbesuch in der Brüsseler Nato-Zentrale ein Eintreten für starke deutsche Streitkräfte zugesichert. Man tue natürlich alles dafür, die Bundeswehr gut auszustatten, sagte der SPD-Politiker am Freitagabend nach einem Gespräch mit Nato-Generalsekretär Jens Stoltenberg. Die Verteidigungsausgaben Deutschlands seien bereits in seiner Zeit als Finanzminister in einer Weise gestiegen, wie das «viele, viele Jahre» nicht der Fall gewesen sei. «Das ist jetzt auch etwas, was wir fortsetzen werden im Rahmen der Haushaltsmöglichkeiten, die wir haben», sagte er.
Zum sogenannten Zwei-Prozent-Ziel der Nato aus dem Jahr 2014 bekannte sich Scholz jedoch nicht ausdrücklich. Es sieht vor, dass sich alle Alliierten bis 2024 dem Nato-Richtwert annähern, mindestens zwei Prozent ihres Bruttoinlandsprodukts (BIP) für Verteidigung auszugeben. Auch im Koalitionsvertrag wird das Ziel nicht erwähnt.
Stoltenberg sagte, wenn man die Verteidigungsausgaben reduziere, wenn es wie nach dem Kalten Krieg weniger Spannungen gebe, dann müsse man auch in der Lage sein, sie wieder zu erhöhen, wenn die Spannungen wieder stiegen. Letzteres sei derzeit der Fall. Zugleich räumte der Norweger ein, dass es nie leicht sei, Geld für Verteidigung zu finden. Mehr Geld dafür bedeute schließlich weniger Geld für etwas anderes.
Die Verteidigungsausgaben der Bundesrepublik erreichten nach Nato-Standards im vergangenen Jahr rund 51,6 Milliarden Euro. Deutschland war mit einer BIP-Quote von 1,55 Prozent allerdings weiterhin weit vom Zwei-Prozent-Ziel entfernt. In diesem Jahr wird nach den jüngsten veröffentlichten Schätzungen mit Ausgaben in Höhe von rund 53,2 Milliarden Euro und einer Quote von nur noch 1,53 Prozent gerechnet.

Man tue natürlich alles dafür, die Bundeswehr gut auszustatten, sagte der SPD-Politiker am Freitagabend nach einem Gespräch mit Nato-Generalsekretär Jens Stoltenberg. Die Verteidigungsausgaben Deutschlands seien bereits in seiner Zeit als Finanzminister in einer Weise gestiegen, wie das «viele, viele Jahre» nicht der Fall gewesen sei. «Das ist jetzt auch etwas, was wir fortsetzen werden im Rahmen der Haushaltsmöglichkeiten, die wir haben», sagte er.
Zum sogenannten Zwei-Prozent-Ziel der Nato aus dem Jahr 2014 bekannte sich Scholz jedoch nicht ausdrücklich. Es sieht vor, dass sich alle Alliierten bis 2024 dem Nato-Richtwert annähern, mindestens zwei Prozent ihres Bruttoinlandsprodukts (BIP) für Verteidigung auszugeben. Auch im Koalitionsvertrag wird das Ziel nicht erwähnt.
Stoltenberg sagte, wenn man die Verteidigungsausgaben reduziere, wenn es wie nach dem Kalten Krieg weniger Spannungen gebe, dann müsse man auch in der Lage sein, sie wieder zu erhöhen, wenn die Spannungen wieder stiegen. Letzteres sei derzeit der Fall. Zugleich räumte der Norweger ein, dass es nie leicht sei, Geld für Verteidigung zu finden. Mehr Geld dafür bedeute schließlich weniger Geld für etwas anderes.
Die Verteidigungsausgaben der Bundesrepublik erreichten nach Nato-Standards im vergangenen Jahr rund 51,6 Milliarden Euro. Deutschland war mit einer BIP-Quote von 1,55 Prozent allerdings weiterhin weit vom Zwei-Prozent-Ziel entfernt. In diesem Jahr wird nach den jüngsten veröffentlichten Schätzungen mit Ausgaben in Höhe von rund 53,2 Milliarden Euro und einer Quote von nur noch 1,53 Prozent gerechnet.

Across Europe, NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to scramble in case of suspicious or unannounced flights near the airspace of our Allies. NATO calls this activity Air Policing, which has been an integral part of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence for 60 years.
In the Western Balkans, several Allies – including NATO’s newest member countries 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇲🇰North Macedonia – don’t have fighter jets capable of intercepting unsafe air traffic.
To secure the airspace over these countries, other NATO Allies take turns leading air policing missions. In 🇸🇮Slovenia, the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇭🇺Hungarian Air Forces share responsibility, while in 🇲🇪Montenegro and 🇦🇱Albania, it’s the 🇮🇹Italian and 🇬🇷Greek Air Forces. In November 2021, the Greek Air Force assumed responsibility for safeguarding North Macedonia’s airspace under the NATO air policing mission umbrella.
Footage includes shots of Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons, Greek Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons and Hungarian Air Force JAS-39 Gripens.
In this series, we explore NATO’s five special air policing arrangements to ensure the integrity of NATO’s airspace and the defence of our almost one billion citizens.

Nga ana tjetër, edhe ushtria franceze pranoi se dy avionë luftarakë dhe një mjet tjetër fluturues u ndeshën me dy avionë ushtarakë të Rusisë në hapësirën ajrore ndërkombëtare mbi Detin e Zi.
Është hera e dytë për këtë javë që ndodh diçka e tillë. Këto tensione në qiell nuk janë të pazakonta, por shihen me shqetësim pasi vijnë në një moment kur tensionet mes Rusisë dhe Perëndimit janë shumë të larta.
Sipas një zyrtari të lartë të inteligjencës perëndimore, nëse Rusia vendos të pushtojë Ukrainën, konflikti mund të përhapet më tej në Europë.
“Të mendosh se lufta mund të zhvillohet vetëm brenda një kombi do të ishte marrëzi,” shtuan ata.
Këto shqetësime u mbështetën edhe nga oficeri më i lartë ushtarak i Britanisë. Të martën, shefi i shtabit të mbrojtjes, admirali Sir Tony Radakin, u tha gazetarëve: “Rëndësia e skenarëve më të këqij për sa i përket një pushtimi në shkallë të plotë do të ishte në një shkallë që nuk është parë në Europë që nga Lufta e Dytë Botërore”.

What is it like to be a soldier on a NATO exercise?
NATO exercises happen all year round – on land, in the air, at sea – with multinational troops from NATO Allies and partner countries. What's it like to be a soldier participating in one of these big exercises? Our video producer documented the experience while embedded with a company of Romanian soldiers on exercise Steadfast Defender 2021.
Exercise Steadfast Defender 2021 was a large-scale NATO exercise, designed to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction. With over 9,000 participants from more than 20 NATO Allies and partners, the exercise tested NATO's ability to deploy large numbers of troops, equipment and supplies rapidly across the Atlantic and Europe.
Prior to filming, NATO videographers tested negative for COVID-19. It was not mandatory for Romanian troops to wear masks outside, as per national government guidance.
Footage includes shots of video producer Jake Tupman interacting with Romanian soldiers and participating in training.

NATO foreign ministers gathered in the Latvian capital, Riga, on Tuesday at the start of a two-day meeting, with troubles to the alliance's east on Russia's border with Ukraine and in Belarus topping the agenda.
The 30-nation alliance remains uncertain of Moscow's aims on Ukraine's borders. Fears of a Russian incursion have grown amid accusations Moscow has deployed tens of thousands of troops and heavy weapons to its neighbor's borders.
"Any future Russian aggression against Ukraine would come at a high price and have serious political and economic consequences for Russia," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He also stressed that Ukraine is not a NATO member and not covered by the alliance's mutual defense pact.
"We need to be prepared for the worst and we need to convey a message to Russia that they should not conduct a military incursion into Ukraine," he said, adding that alliance members could impose sanctions.
Latvia's defense minister, Artis Pabriks, told DW he "shares the concerns" of the US and other NATO allies over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Pabriks also expressed fears about other countries in the region as Russia continues to exert its authority over its neighbors. He said that Moscow "basically controls almost all activities within Belarus" as it seeks to strengthen its influence in the region.
"So that means that we can expect any type of challenge. And we know that Russian political elite is not afraid to use military force when it decides it is to today for purposes," he said.
He added that more should have been done to help Ukraine ward off the threat from Russia.
Pabriks said he would like to integrate Ukraine more, increasing its ties with the European Union, and "engage" with Kyiv over issues such as corruption.

Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz hat bei seinem Antrittsbesuch in der Brüsseler Nato-Zentrale ein Eintreten für starke deutsche Streitkräfte zugesichert. Man tue natürlich alles dafür, die Bundeswehr gut auszustatten, sagte der SPD-Politiker am Freitagabend nach einem Gespräch mit Nato-Generalsekretär Jens Stoltenberg. Die Verteidigungsausgaben Deutschlands seien bereits in seiner Zeit als Finanzminister in einer Weise gestiegen, wie das «viele, viele Jahre» nicht der Fall gewesen sei. «Das ist jetzt auch etwas, was wir fortsetzen werden im Rahmen der Haushaltsmöglichkeiten, die wir haben», sagte er.
Zum sogenannten Zwei-Prozent-Ziel der Nato aus dem Jahr 2014 bekannte sich Scholz jedoch nicht ausdrücklich. Es sieht vor, dass sich alle Alliierten bis 2024 dem Nato-Richtwert annähern, mindestens zwei Prozent ihres Bruttoinlandsprodukts (BIP) für Verteidigung auszugeben. Auch im Koalitionsvertrag wird das Ziel nicht erwähnt.
Stoltenberg sagte, wenn man die Verteidigungsausgaben reduziere, wenn es wie nach dem Kalten Krieg weniger Spannungen gebe, dann müsse man auch in der Lage sein, sie wieder zu erhöhen, wenn die Spannungen wieder stiegen. Letzteres sei derzeit der Fall. Zugleich räumte der Norweger ein, dass es nie leicht sei, Geld für Verteidigung zu finden. Mehr Geld dafür bedeute schließlich weniger Geld für etwas anderes.
Die Verteidigungsausgaben der Bundesrepublik erreichten nach Nato-Standards im vergangenen Jahr rund 51,6 Milliarden Euro. Deutschland war mit einer BIP-Quote von 1,55 Prozent allerdings weiterhin weit vom Zwei-Prozent-Ziel entfernt. In diesem Jahr wird nach den jüngsten veröffentlichten Schätzungen mit Ausgaben in Höhe von rund 53,2 Milliarden Euro und einer Quote von nur noch 1,53 Prozent gerechnet.
