Steven Pinker: Linguistics as a Window to Understanding the Brain
Steven Pinker - Psychologist, Cognitive Scientist, and Linguist at Harvard University How did humans acquire language? In this lecture, best-selling author Steven Pinker introduces you to linguistics, the evolution of spoken language, and the debate over the existence of an innate universal grammar. He also explores why language is such a fundamental part of social relationships, human biology, and human evolution. Finally, Pinker touches on the wide variety of applications for linguistics, from improving how we teach reading and writing to how we interpret law, politics, and literature. BASE Meetup 19 Nov 2012: "Lenses: Fields as Values" by Seth Tisue (Northwestern University)
Lenses aren't in the Scala standard library, but two libraries provide them: Scalaz and Miles Sabin's Shapeless. Seth will show how you to use the Shapeless version, and we'll look at how it's implemented. A lens represents a readable and "settable" location in a possibly nested immutable object. ("Settable" is in quotes because we make a new object rather than mutating the old one.) This may interest you if: ...you use immutable objects ...you use nested immutable objects ...you want to abstract over different fields in your immutable objects ...you're interested in functional programming This will overlap a lot with Ed Kmett's 2011 talk on the same subject. If you saw and completely grasped Ed's talk, you might not learn much from this one. Compared to Ed's, Seth's take will be more elementary and less formal. (And I'll be covering only lenses themselves, not bringing in the state monad too.) Slides for the talk are available here: docs.google.com Sample code is here: github.com The Meetup page for this talk is here: www.meetup.com

Quick Core Tool
Quick Core Tool for taking cores out of wood turnings on a wood lathe. In this video Hannes is using the new Quick Core Tool to separate multiple cores from a piece of Natural edged Black Cherry to create a set of nested bowls. The QC tool is also useful for removing rings of wood from around the crown of a hat and also the core from within the crown of the hat, these will be used for a mirror frame and mini hat respectively. In normal bowl turning the tool can save wood out for another bowl, used this way this tool quickly pays for itself in the wood saved.

Compassion & Sacrifice: for speaking violist and speaking pianist
Violist, Chantal Lemire, and pianist Michael Park performing "Compassion & Sacrifice" by Michael Park. Compassion & Sacrifice is many things to many people. For the composer, it is a speaking duo for viola and piano. For the performers, it is the unique challenge of having to speak while playing their instruments. For arts lovers, it is a critique of how arts funding is portrayed in the right-wing media. Compassion & Sacrifice is the latest creation from one of Vancouver's most vibrant collaborative teams: Michael Park (www.michaelpark.ca) and Ray Hsu (www.thewayofray.com). In response to the jaw-dropping Sun News Media interview between Krista Erickson and iconic dancer, Margie Gillis, Michael and Ray discussed the interview at length, becoming obsessed with the ideas of media analysis, copyright, and fair dealing. Using those discussions as the basis, Ray sculpted a dialogue between musicians nested with quotations from the interview. By musicalizing that dialogue, Michael has ensured that it's not one you'll soon forget. In his rather puckish way, Ray Hsu live tweeted from the world premiere that, "The concert ranged from the beautiful, the weird, and the feel good. I think mine was the weird one." The original video that started it all is available online at the Sun News Network's website, originally aired June 1, 2011. It features Krista Erickson interviewing iconic dancer, Margie Gillis. www.sunnewsnetwork.ca

The House The Old One Built
Metaphorically speaking, the _house_ represents the universe. A cumulative tale is a literary form that is hierarchical in structure and aims to generate a completed picture from a nested set of interdependent but smaller storylines. The circa 1755 verse _The House That Jack Built_ is an example of the cumulative tale narrative form. There is an apocryphal story concerning Einstein in which he was purported to have said to Max Born ¬_God does not play dice with the universe_, to which Born supposedly replied _Stop telling God what to do_. The true origin of this story is in a letter Einstein wrote to Max Born, which, as translated by Irene Born, contains the following quote _Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the _Old One_. I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice_. I present this quote for two reasons: First, to address a popular misconception, and second, to give an example of Einsteins use of the descriptor _the Old One_. Also, this is one of my favorite quotes from Einstein because it has always been my strongly held belief that the fundamental driving force behind scientific inquiry is the desire to catch the Old One at work. For many years, a convergence has been occurring between philosophical/theological postulates and science. I have been both avid follower and contributor to this trend. As a ...

The Boiler Room Chain
This episode is the reincarnation of an ancient video chain letter. In it Seattle Untimely, with guests Alan Schoen and Scott Hesel (this was Scott's idea), watch and quote the scene in Boiler Room in which Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel watch and quote Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen. If you make a video of yourself quoting these videos and send it to ten of your friends, Bill Gates will give you a thousand dollars, a sick boy or girl will receive his or her critical operation, Dick Cheney will be impeached, your favorite show will be put back on the air, and that boy or girl you like will call you. If you just forward this video, you will receive a coupon in the mail for Buy One Get One Free pizza, and that girl or boy you like will smile at you, maybe out of mutual interest, maybe out of politeness. IF YOU DO NOT FORWARD THIS EMAIL, Bill Gates will extort one hundred dollars from you for another worthless operating system, Barack Obama will not be your friend, and the spirit of the sick boy or girl who you let die will possess the boy or girl you like, reject you, and then cancel your favorite show. If everyone does their job, and this chain letter eventually reaches Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen, who make their own video, we will have created a perfect Boiler Room prism, and we're all gonna get laid. So get on it. You have one week.

Battlefield 3 Kharg Island glitch get INSIDE top of tower wall breach
This is how you get inside the top of the tower in Kharg Island on Battlefield 3 with an easy wall breach. I found this while I was trying to kill an enemy sniper who had nested in up there for most of the match. Perfect way to get their tags, or a great sniper spot if you prefer. Sorry for the video quality, its a camcorder. I dont own a PVR.

MCITP 70-640: Active Directory Groups
Windows allows the creation of groups which simplifies permissions assignment for users. This video looks at how to use groups in Windows and also looks at the basics of how to use role based access control, one strategy used to simplify group administrator in a domain. Groups Each group that is created has a security identifier or SID associated with it. This SID is added to the local access list for the resource that you are controlling access to. A group can be created that does not have a SID that is used for distribution lists. These groups are covered in the next video. Nesting When you place one group inside another group, it is called nesting. Nesting also allows two or more groups to be placed in the same group. This essentially means that administration could be divided between two or more administrators. When administration is separated like this it is often referred to as granular control because each administrator has administrative control over a small part of the whole effects of that group that contains the other groups Using nesting, you could create groups for the users in New York, Washington and London. Using nesting you could create a group called All_Users in which the groups for each location could be put in. Nesting can also be broken down further. For example you could divide New York users into two groups called NY_Sales and NY_Marketing. These two groups could be placed in NY_Users and this group placed in All_Users. If you wanted to create a ...

WORDPRESS SITE WORDPRESS MENUS
www.wordpressmenus.com WORDPRESS SITE WORDPRESS MENUS blog. WordPress has a web template system using a template processor. Users can re-arrange widgets without editing PHP or HTML code; they can also install and switch between themes. The PHP and HTML code in themes can also be edited for more advanced customizations. WordPress also features integrated link management; a search engine-friendly, clean permalink structure; the ability to assign nested, multiple categories to articles; and support for tagging of posts and articles. Automatic filters are also included, providing standardized formatting and styling of text in articles (for example, converting regular quotes to smart quotes). WordPress also supports the Trackback and Pingback standards for displaying links to other sites that have themselves linked to a post or article. Finally, WordPress has a rich plugin architecture which allows users and developers to extend its functionality beyond the features that come as part of the base install. Native applications exist for Android,[9] iPhone/iPod Touch,[10] iPad,[11] Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry[12] which provide access to some of the features in the WordPress Admin panel and work with WordPress.com and many WordPress.org blogs.
