History of Chao Anouvong by Thai
Chao Anouvong (Lao: ເຈົ້າອານຸວົງສ໌; Thai: เจ้าอนุวงศ์; RTGS: Chao Anuwong), or regnal name Xaiya Setthathirath V (Lao: ໄຊຍະເສດຖາທິຣາຊທີ່ຫ້າ; Thai: ไชยเชษฐาธิราชที่ห้า; RTGS: Chaiya Chetthathirat Thi Ha), (1767 – 1829), led the Laotian Rebellion (1826 – 1829) as the last monarch of the Lao Kingdom of Vientiane. Anouvong succeeded to the throne in 1805 upon the death his brother, Chao Inthavong (Lao: ເຈົ້າອິນທະວົງສ໌; เจ้าอินทวงศ์), Xaiya Setthathirath IV, who had succeeded their father, Phrachao Siribounyasan (Lao: ພຣະເຈົ້າສິຣິບຸນຍະສາຣ; พระเจ้าสิริบุญสาร) Xaiya Setthathirath III. Anou was known by his father's regnal number until recently discovered records disclosed that his father and brother had the same regnal name.
From the time of the first Burmese–Siamese War (1548–49), the upper Mekhong region had been subject to both Burmese and Siamese imposition of corvée labour, slave raids and the forced migration of entire communities as they sought to replenish their manpower. This caused a frequent shifting of alliances as rulers and people sought their best advantage. Pra Chao Siribounyasan sought a middle ground in the conflicts between Burma and Siam, but he only succeeded in angering King Taksin of Thonburi. In 1778 Somdet Chao Phraya Mahakasatseuk (later Rama I) was ordered to subdue the Lao states. He drove Siribounyasan into exile and ordered the destruction of Vientiane's provisions, orchards and fields to prevent his return, holding hostage his three sons, Nanthasèn, Inthavong and Anouvong. In 1782, King Rama I ordered Prince Nanthasèn to take his father's place, and he ruled until 1793. Two years later, he rebelled, was defeated and was imprisoned in Bangkok. He was replaced by Prince Inthavong, who was then titled Phrachao Xaiyasetthathirath, with Anouvong as his assistant. On the death of his older brother in 1805, Anouvong ascended the Vientiane throne as Xaiya Setthathirath IV.[1]
In Thailand nationalists have erected monuments to Lady Mo (Thao Suranari) and General Sing. The government also named schools and a museum in honour of the victorious general. Modern Lao nationalist movements, on the other hand, have turned Anouvong into a hero, even though his rebellion caused the end of the kingdom of Lan Xang Vientiane (Million Elephants,) the destruction of Vientiane, and a permanent division of the Lao people between the country of Laos and the Lao-speaking provinces of northeastern Thailand. His actions however is the point of Lao nationality and identity that persisted and has been given credit for the current Lao state, which may have otherwise been easily incorporated into Thailand as did the kingdom of Lanna.
Anouvong had ordered the building of Wat Si Saket in Vientiane. An elephant howdah that belonged to him is now on display in the Lao National Museum in Vientiane.
In 2010, to coincide with the 450th Anniversary celebrations of Vientiane, the Lao PDR government created Chao Anouvong Park, complete with a large bronze statue of the locally revered King.

VO Vientiane residents call for smoke-free Chao Anouvong Park
INTRO: Vientiane residents and young people assembled in Chao Anouvong Park to campaign for the smoke-free status of the capital's largest public park to be upheld.
STORY: The gathering aimed to remind the public that the park was declared a smoke-free zone in 2011 under the Law on Tobacco Control.
Vientiane Vice Mayor Saythong Keodouangdy, who was also present, said that Chao Anouvong Park's smoke-free status was in keeping with the capital's six slogans to encourage the environmentally-friendly development of Vientiane, especially cleanliness. He said adding that, Keeping Chao Anouvong Park smoke-free will result in a healthy, enjoyable, relaxing and attractive place for all
People taking part in the event said they wanted to appeal to smokers not to light up inside the park. They pointed out that the park was a smoke-free area and should be kept that way for the enjoyment of tourists, vendors, young people and all residents of Vientiane, so they could go there for healthy recreational activities knowing that the law would be complied with.
The campaign was part of events taking place in the run up to World No Tobacco Day on May 31.
According to a global report from the World Health Organisation (WHO), 4,807 Lao people die from tobacco-related diseases each year, the equivalent of 13 people a day.
WHO Representative to Laos Dr Juliet Fleischl said, It is estimated that by 2030 tobacco will kill more than 8 million people worldwide if action is not taken now. This is why World No Tobacco Day is an important time to remind people around the world that action has to be taken now before it is too late.
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is the only treaty that responds to the global tobacco epidemic. As of February 12 this year, 168 countries had signed up to this convention with many expressing their wish to become a party to the convention.

INTRO: A Vientiane man has discovered 40 silver plated Buddha images in a paddy field in Huaxang village, Naxaithong district, inadvertently unearthing the objects while digging for crickets.
STORY: The mysterious discovery was made on Sunday evening by Mr Phoupha, aged 22, who went to hunt for crickets near Huaxang village, where he found 40 Buddha images in a hole about 50 centimetres deep.
The discovery also surprised members of the public, especially on social media, where images of the silver plated Buddha images have gone viral.

Mr Boupha said he did not know what to do after unearthing the find. First he rushed to the village and called his grandfather to collect the images and take them to the temple. He told archeologists he was amazed to find so many relics in one hole and wasn't sure what to do next, so he called his grandfather for help.

According to A technical official from the Heritage Department of MICT, they do not have any historical evidence to support this discovery in an area which was not previously known to have archeological remains.
Official said, it is assumed that the images were buried by people in the village during war time or during the reigns of Chao Souriyavongsa and Chao Anouvong,” .
All of the images are about 20 centimetres in height and consistent with other relics dating to the time of these kings, he said.
Archeologists will continue to look for information and evidence about the origins of the relics, which are a significant find.
Officials, working together with Huaxang village authorities, have stored the images in t he village temple while they proceed with registration of the unearthed relics.
