World First Residential University - The Nalanda University In India
Nālandā (Hindi/Sanskrit/Pali: नालंदा) is the name of an ancient center of higher learning in Bihar, India. The site of Nalanda is located in the Indian state of Bihar, about 55 miles south east of Patna, and was a Buddhist center of learning from 427 to 1197 CE. It has been called "one of the first great universities in recorded history". Some buildings were constructed by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka the Great (273–232 BCE) which is an indication of an early establishment of the Buddhist learning center Nalanda. The Gupta Empire also patronized some monasteries. According to historians, Nalanda flourished between the reign of the Gupta king Śakrāditya (also known as Kumāragupta, reigned 415-55) and 1197 CE, supported by patronage from Buddhist emperors like Harsha as well as later emperors from the Pala Empire. The complex was built with red bricks and its ruins occupy an area of 14 hectares. At its peak, the university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China, Greece, and Persia.Nalanda was sacked by Turkic Muslim invaders under Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1193, a milestone in the decline of Buddhism in India. The great library of Nalanda University was so vast that it is reported to have burned for three months after the Mughals set fire to it, sacked and destroyed the monasteries, and drove the monks from the site. In 2006, Singapore, China, India, Japan, and other nations, announced a proposed plan to restore and revive the ancient site as Nalanda International University.

Future Challenges for Energy and Buildings Research Workshop
Tuesday 11 September
This workshop explores significant findings emerging from international research and to initiate a wider discussion on what constitutes an appropriate, progressive research programme. The research is highlighted in a special issue of Building Research & Information, published on 9 July http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rbri20/40/4
This workshop examines the nature, objectives and culture of research, and the evolving relationships between research communities, funders and stakeholders.
Key questions for the workshop are:
How can the research community better support and engage with the agenda of reducing overall energy and carbon consumption? In particular, to meet the policy demands to supply empirical evidence for policy evaluation; to meet practical demands for improving practices by a diverse array of clients, professionals and contractors.
The workshop will provide short presentations from the researchers. This will be followed by responses from stakeholders in government, industry, wider society and the research community.
Dr Libby Schweber, Reading University, 'Inter-disciplinarity: A view from the social sciences'
Professor Jim Skea, 'Research and evidence needs for decarbonisation in the built environment: a UK case study'
Dr Colin Axon, Brunel University, 'Building Communities: Reducing energy use in tennanted commercial property'
Professor Rajat Gupta, Oxford Brookes University, 'Appraisal of UK funding frameworks for energy research in housing'
Respondents
Adam Cooper, DEpartment of Energy and Climate Change
Dr David Shipworth, UCL Energy Institute

The Muslims Sultanate their influence on Orissa during the 13th and 14th centuries. This continued till 1568. This was followed by the rule of the Mughals which lasted till the death of Aurangzeb. After his death the Mughal power which declined bringing in the influence of the Nawab off Bengal who ruled it till he ceded this territory over Orissa began in about 1803 AD when the Marathas were suppressed by the diplomatic treaty's of the East India Company.
