Traveling India: Delhi. This video is of our first hours and days in India. Be prepared to see two culture-shocked westerners. No amount of travel guidebooks...
For many more things to do in Delhi, where to stay, and delicious food to eat, check out my Delhi Travel Guide: http://migrationology.com/delhi-travel-guide-ebook/ (click the link)! Delhi, India, (नई दिल्ली) is the national capital of the country and has a metropolitan population of around 22 million residents. The city is ancient, it's been around since the 6th century BC so there are many historical and cultural places to visit. That's specifically why I created this list of 21 things to do in Delhi, to help you plan and get excited about visiting Delhi, India. 1. The Lotus Temple (Bahá'í House of Worship) - The temple is in the shape of a giant lotus and on the inside is a peaceful sanctuary where you can enter and sit in silence for as long as you like. 2. ISKCON Hare Krishna Temple - I had never seen a temple like this before, so it as an interesting experience to hear the music and walk around the interior of the temple. 3. Kalkaji Mandir Hindu Temple - This temple is a very important Hindu temple in Delhi and while I was there, there were a number of babies being dedicated by being decorated and blessed. 4. Jama Masjid - Located in Old Delhi, Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in all of Delhi. Though they will attempt to get money from you, it's free to enter the mosque, but if you want to take photos inside they will charge you 300 rupees. 5. Akshardham Temple - This modern Hindu temple located on the outskirts of Delhi literally made my jaw drop, it's that amazing. It's free to enter, but unfortunately, they don't allow any photography inside. This is one of the things to do in Delhi that you cannot afford to miss! 6. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib (Sikh Temple) - Unlike some other sites in Delhi where you'll find many touts and hustlers, the Gurdwara Sikh Temple is about the nicest and most friendly place you can go in Delhi. People are extremely nice and you can enter the temple to listen to music. 7. Laxmi Narayan Mandir -- Dedicated by Mahatma Gandhi, this is one of the most significant Hindu temples in Delhi. 8. Hauz Khas Complex - I'm always amazed at the history of Delhi and Hauz Khas is an excellent example of ancient monuments in the middle of a public park. 9. Lodi Gardens - As a free entrance public park, visiting the Lodi Gardens is one of the most amazing things to do in Delhi. It's just like an ordinary park, but it's filled with thousand year old tombs and monuments that are truly inspirational. 10. India Gate - The war memorial is one of the landmarks of Delhi and resembles the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris. 11. Jantar Mantar - The Jantar Mantar complex is a compound that houses 13 different astronomy instruments. The structures are confusing to look at, but if you read or follow a guide (or audio guide) you'll understand how each instrument functioned. 12. Qutub Minar - Just like Akshardham Temple, Qutub Minar is one of the top things to do in Delhi, it's truly remarkable. The minaret is the main attraction, a huge pillar of red carved sandstone that towers above the ancient ruins in the complex. 13. Humayun's Tomb - One of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Delhi is Humayun's Tomb, built in Mughal Islamic architecture. 14. Tomb of Safdarjung - Very similar to Humayun's tomb is the tomb of Safdarjung. What I really liked is that there were no other tourists the day I went so it was quite and peaceful. 15. Red Fort - Located near Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi is the Red Fort. It's an entire walled in city where you can walk around the browse the many buildings within the walls. 16. Raj Ghat - The Raj Ghat is a memorial park dedicated to Gandhi. 17. Chandni Chowk & Chawri Bazar - The liveliest and busiest area of Delhi is Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar. I think it's possible to purchase anything from the entire world in this area, and you'll also find lots of delicious food. 18. Dilli Haat - This handicraft village was set up by the Delhi tourism authority and it's a decent place to purchase souvenirs or high quality crafts. You'll also find a food court that contains canteens serving food from all over India. 19. Connaught Place (Rajiv Chowk) - Known for short as just CP is a huge series of roundabouts and is the central modern business district of Delhi. Within the area you'll find all sorts of shops, famous restaurants and the Palika Bazar, an underground shopping center. 20. Paharganj (Main Bazar) - The main bazar is located just west of the New Delhi railroad station and it's an old area of town where you'll find a market and lots of budget accommodation options. 21. Delhi Street Food - Eating street food is one of the best things to do in Delhi, you'll love it. Thank you for watching this Delhi travel guide video and hope you have a great trip to Delhi, India! Ayurveda is a form of an alternative medicine that has been used in parts of India for over centuries now. The emphasis is on physical, mental and spiritual harmony. I am now going to start the treatments and the first one they are going to begin with is Abhyangam, followed by the two that is bundle massage and Shirodhara. "Simple treatment like Abhyangam which is a general body massage. It starts from top to toe massaging the body with two people synchronizingly massaging the body for a period of 45 minutes. Followed by Shirodhara. That is a popular treatment." And now I will be going for my head massage which is basically very imperative even for any treatment, be it Abhyangam, be it the Bundle massage or be it Shirodhara. With some great travel tips, Udayan helps you navigate through the exciting and overwhelming India. What are some practical and useful tips you should know when traveling to New Delhi, India or another city in India? Despite India developing rapidly, it still does not have most of the infrastructure and amenities that are so common in the western world. Following a few handy travel tips might make travel for you a whole lot easier while you are in India. First, if you are taking a taxi from the airport, make sure it is a registered taxi. The best option is to take a prepaid taxi. If that is not available, you should fix the price or make sure that the meter is working. Do not wait till reaching your destination for deciding on the price even if your driver insists on doing so. This applies not only the transportation from the airport but any transportation in gerneral. If you are traveling within India there are quite a few transportation options available. In India transportation ranges from the pragmatic to the imaginative. Within Delhi the metros the best way to travel. So if you are going somewhere, check if there is a metro route that can get you there. For short distances autos are generally a good bet. Unless the meter is not working. In which case you should find out what the correct rate is from the hotel you are staying at or from the person you are staying with. If you plan to be sight seeing throughout the day, it is probably a good idea to get an air conditioned cab like this one. Especially so if it is summer. These cabs are generally cheap but check on the prices with your hotel or with the person you are staying with. Just incase. You might want to rent your own car to drive around here. But if you are not used to the streets in Delhi, it is not a recommended option. Always try and get bottled water instead of tap water in this country. Bottled water is widely available. But when you are buying it make sure that the top is sealed. India has some great street food. But travelers should avoid eating it. If you are really keen, there is some upscale resturants that serve traditional fast food, that is actually hygenic. India has the finest hotels in the whole world. You will find attention and service here of levels far receding often those, even in the West. People here, from the concierge to the bell boy, will be more than willing to help you, even with your smallest bits of luggage. However, there is a slight catch. They all want to be tipped. Fortunately ten or tweenty rupee notes will do the trick, sometimes. This here is a tweenty rupee note. This is a ten rupee note. This is hundred and this is five hundred. It is always a good idea to have as many as possible of these, that is a ten rupee ad a tweenty rupee note, for tipping and for just about everything else. When you ask somebody for dirrections it is always a good idea to ask somebody else, just to confirm. It is not that somebody wants to give you wrong dirrections or wants to ruin your day, it is just that sometimes people want to be way too helpful. Most upscale and midscale hotels in the country provide you with basic accessories, like tissue paper and toilet paper. However, if you are putting up in one of those cheaper or small town accomodations you might not want to take these things for granted. All these essentials are available widely across the country. In general stores like the one behind my back. In India, getting your laundry done is not a hastle at all. Laundry takes a day. And the shirts can be ironed within the space of a few minutes. You need not worry about your laundry because it will not take more than a dollar. Getting your shirts wrinkled up is not too much of a hastle. Always bargin in the market place. Unless you are in a fixed price shop. It is not a good idea to give beggers around the place money. Even if you are tempted too. It just incourages the wrong sort of placement. And anyways the money always goes to someone else and not exactly the person you paid the money. Avoid going to quiet and lonely areas if you are a woman. Dressing conservative is probably the best option. Medical help here is cheaper than any place else and widely available, at least in the cities. However, get a medical refference, like you get anywhere else, before you go to the facility. When you are traveling back, I will equate enough time to make sure that you get to the airport on time. Even when you travel back late at night you are likely to encounter a traffic jam. Especially when you are traveling from central Delhi to say the airport. Take about an hour at hand but buffer some time in for traffic jams. With these tips you can enjoy a more comfortable, safer and healthier stay in the country. And get around to what is the most important, enjoying the immense beauty and culture you find here. This is Udayan showing you India.

A day after addressing a massive crowd in East Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised poll pitch at Dwarka on Sunday ahead of Assembly polls.
NEW DELHI: Accusing BJP of trying to form government in Delhi through "horse trading", Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said Aam Aadmi Party will seek the President's intervention to ensure that the saffron party does not get an invitation "under any circumstances" from the lt governor.
All the exit polls on Saturday have predicted a majority for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Delhi Assembly elections with one of them giving it as high as 53 seats in the 70-member House. In the elections, billed as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi but rejected as such by the BJP leadership, a resurgent AAP-led by Arvind Kejriwal has emerged the winner in all the polls. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has written to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking permission to invite the single largest party in the State Assembly to form the Government, which could...
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by two percentage points in terms of vote share but attracting middle-class voters remains a challenge, shows an internal survey by the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. The survey does not talk about the number of seats the AAP is likely to win in the 70-member assembly when elections are held on February 7 after nearly a year of Central rule. The AAP won 28 seats in the December 2013 poll and ran a minority government for 49 days with outside support from the Congress but the brief and controversy-ridden rule is like a millstone around its neck, especially with the middle-class that is upset over the party’s retreat. The party has been using a campaign to reach out to upper-middle class voters — who constitute at least 17% of the city’s electorate of 13 million — to vote for it. In the 2013 assembly election, the BJP’s vote share was 33%, followed by the AAP’s 29.4% and the Congress’s 24.5%, with no single party getting a majority. The AAP has not taken its two-point advantage, in accordance with the survey, as a decisive lead this time around. “We need to be ahead by at least five percentage points to win comfortably. For the party, the challenge is to retain this upward trend through hard work among the people as we get closer to the election,” a party source said. Aam Aadmi Party on Monday released avideo footage as proof of BJP’s involvement in horse-trading to poach their MLAs to form a government in the national capital. The video footage claims that Delhi BJP vice president Sher Singh Dagar tried to poach AAP MLA Dinesh Mohania. In a hurriedly called press conference, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal claimed that Dagar offered Rs 4 crore to Mohania to lend his support to the safron party. Mohania is party MLA from Sangham Vihar. In video footage released at the press conference, Dagar is seen luring Mohania to resign from party. The BJP leader is heard saying that he is ready to bear expense if he fights next election. Dagar also claims that if Mohania loses election, they will offer him a chairmanship of any corporation. Addressing the press conference, Kejriwal said that they will submit the raw footage to Supreme Court to expose the BJP's attempts to form the government in the national capital.
BJP will get a comfortable majority in Delhi, with Aam Aadmi Party reduced to a distant second and Congress completely routed, an opinion poll conducted by ABP News-Nielsen has predicted. BJP, riding high on the Modi wave, is predicted to bag 46 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly, followed by AAP with 18 seats while Congress could be reduced to only five seats if the elections were to be held in the national capital now, the poll said. In the 2013 assembly polls, BJP had won 32 seats, followed by AAP with 28 seats. The survey predicted further decimation of the Congress which ruled the city for 15 years under Sheila Dikshit. The party is likely to get three seats less than what it had bagged in the last elections. According to the opinion poll, BJP could end up with 38% vote share, followed by AAP with 26% and Congress with 22%. AAP leader and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, though, remains the most preferred candidate for the CM's post, but with a thinner margin. Around 39% of respondents plumped for Kejriwal, who was closely followed by BJP leader Harsh Vardhan with 38% of votes. NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Friday issued a notification banning the sale, purchase and storage of all forms of chewable tobacco including gutkha, khaini and zarda in the national capital. The move comes after a review by the AAP government of the implementation of the ban, which revealed that it was not effective due to various factors, one of them being the lack of clarity about some clauses of the notification. "We have decided to come up with a notification to ban chewable tobacco in all forms from Monday in Delhi. Under this, no one will be allowed to sell, purchase or store chewable tobacco," said state health minister Satyendar Jain. He said enforcement teams of Delhi Police and the health department have been asked to conduct surprise inspections across the city to ensure that the ban is implemented. However, no such ban will be enforced on cigarettes. Health department officials said there was a Delhi government notification in September 2012, which was in pursuance of a series of directions from the Supreme Court to ban gutkha in the city. But since the ban mentioned the term "gutkha", the tobacco retailers started selling the components of gutkha (betel nut and raw tobacco) in separate pouches. So, the purpose of banning gutkha was not served.

NEW DELHI: Terming pollution in Delhi as "terrible" and "out of control", the high court on Wednesday demanded a detailed action plan from the state government and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). "We too are victims of air pollution in Delhi," a Division Bench of Justices B D Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva said, specifically referring to the high levels of particulate matter, benzene, sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) "as culprits". It noted that "air pollution here is clearly visible" and referred to the abnormally high levels of certain pollutants in Civil Lines and the IGI airport zone. The court ticked off DPCC wondering why it is "not concerned over the high concentration of pollutants?" It expressed concern that Delhi has only 11 monitoring stations for more than 1.5 crore people.
Around 15000 municipal corporations of Delhi employees are protesting over the AAP government's "denial" of financial aid to the cash- strapped civic bodies.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - New Delhi authorities on Wednesday asked India's federal information technology ministry to block the taxi-hailing apps of U.S.-based Uber and its local rival Ola in the city in a bid to enforce a ban on the companies' services. India in December ordered all unregistered web-based taxi companies to halt operations until they obtain an operating licence after a driver contracted with Uber was accused of rape. The ban, however, has largely been ineffective and both Ola, backed by Japan's SoftBank Corp, and Uber have continued to operate in Delhi while their licence applications are pending. The Delhi authorities told Uber and Ola to stop operating if they want their licence applications to be processed. Now, the city believes blocking the apps is the only way to enforce the ban, a Delhi government official said, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media. A spokesman for Uber declined to comment, while Ola did not respond to a request for comment. Officials at the federal information technology ministry were also not immediately available for comment. Online taxi companies see a lot of potential in India, a market Ola estimates to be worth between $8 billion (5 billion pounds) and $10 billion. The India ban is the latest in a slew of global problems facing Uber, which has come under scrutiny for alleged violations, including using unlicensed drivers. While for many of us, buying a house in the capital looks next to impossible, Lalu Prasad Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal continues to occupy an office in VP House at a meager rent of Rs.333 per month. The politician has been told that he needs to vacate his large government bungalow in Delhi immediately, a decision that the politician has challenged. An agreement with the previous government headed by Manmohan Singh allowed Lalu to remain in the large home till the end of October. The type of bungalow he was given was based on his status as Railway Minister in the coalition government in the UPA. Delhi is known to have been continuously inhabited since at least the 6th century BCE, though human habitation is believed to have existed since the second millennium BCE. Delhi is also widely believed to have been the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas during the times of the Mahabharata. It is the site of many ancient and medieval monuments, archaeological sites and remains.
