Carla Laemmle on Carl Laemmle and Universal Studios
Fun interview with the radiant Carla Laemmle on her uncle, Univeral Studios mogul Carl Laemmle, and the early days of Universal! From "Paul Merton's Birth of Hollywood." Carla is the sole surviving cast member of the 1925 classic "The Phantom of the Opera" and the 1931 version of "Dracula."

Carl Laemmle Presents (Universal Pictures)
User Chubs4ChubsRule pointed this one out to me recently (thanx for that!), and I just had to post it. Especially in light of Uni's 100th birthday upcoming. Carl Laemmle's name was usually prominent in the opening credits; this was definitely more to the point. I quickly point out that Uncle Carl was really not known for narcissism. Nepotism, yes, but not narcissism. Taken from Smouldering Fires (1925). The end titles, by the way, do read "It's A Universal Picture". Just to make it clear.

Carl Laemmle's DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE (Silent 1913)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1913 horror film, directed by Herbert Brenon and Carl Laemmle, written by Brenon and produced by Laemmle. It is based on the Robert Louis Stevenson story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It stars King Baggot in the dual role of Jekyll and Hyde. The film was re-released in the US in August 1927. Like so many other performers of this period, it was standard practice for the actors to apply their own make-up, and while assuming the dual role of Jekyll and Hyde, King Baggot employed a variety of different greasepaints and a tangled mass of crepe hair. Through a series of camera dissolves Baggot was able to achieve the transformation. Cast King Baggot as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde Jane Gail as Alice Matt Snyder as Alice's father Howard Crampton as Dr. Lanyon William Sorelle as Utterson, the attorney Music: Kevin MacLeod

Director Lewis Milestone pioneered the use of the sweeping crane shot to capture a ghastly battlefield panorama of death and mud, and the cast, led by Lew Ayres, is terrific. It's hard to pick a favorite scene, but the finale, as Ayres stretches from his trench to catch a butterfly, is one of the most devastating sequences of the decade. The film won Oscars for Best Picture and for Milestone's direction -- and trivia buffs should note that the actors were coached by future luminary George Cukor, while Ayres became a conscientious objector in World War II. Ballet in the 1925 film 'Phantom of the Opera'
This post is probably best framed as a kind of puzzle. The footage comes from the 1925 film 'Phantom of the Opera' and has something quite Swan Lake-ish about it both in its music, and its choreography, particularly (in the latter) in the disposition of the formations of the corps de ballet. But just when you are determined that its a pastiche of this 1877 work, the corps brings on garlands and ribbons, and use them to form shapes within the groupings of dancers. A bit like in a Romantic work from a slightly earlier era, like La fille mal gardeé. The films sequences begin with some context establishing shots outside the Paris Opera, then in the foyer facing the grand staircase and finally in the auditorium itself, facing the stage over the orchestra. Within the corps de ballet sequences Ive seen, theres a prima ballerina role played Carla Laemmle (b1909), niece of producer Carl Laemmle. Perhaps this is a pastiche of lots of things, but does anyone have any other ideas? the music is from Beethoven's The Creatures of Prometheus (op.43, Overture, Allegretto, Finale), which was composed in 1801 on the libretto of Salvatore Viganò.

The film's greatness stems less from its script than from the stark but moody atmosphere created by director James Whale; Herman Rosse's memorable set designs, particularly the fantastic watchtower laboratory, featuring electrical equipment designed by Kenneth Strickfaden; the creature's trademark look from makeup artist Jack Pierce, who required Karloff to don pounds of makeup and heavy asphalt shoes to create the monster's unique lurching gait; and Karloff's nuanced performance as the tormented and ...

Warm and cozy inside their palatial villa, Lord Byron (Gavin Gordon), Percy Shelley (Douglas Walton), and Shelley's wife Mary (Elsa Lanchester) engage in morbidly sparkling conversation. The wicked Byron mockingly chastises Mary for frightening the literary world with her recent novel Frankenstein, but Mary insists that her horror tale preached a valuable moral, that man was not meant to dabble in the works of God. Moreover, Mary adds that her story did not end with the death of Frankenstein's monster, whereupon she tells the enthralled Byron and Shelley what happened next. Surviving the windmill fire that brought the original 1931 Frankenstein to a close, the Monster (Boris Karloff) quickly revives and goes on another rampage of death and destruction.
