In March 2013, Grande reached mainstream success after her single "The Way" from her debut studio album Yours Truly (2013) became a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.[6][7] The album received critical acclaim and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Early life
Grande was born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, the daughter of Joan Grande and Edward Butera, a graphic designer.[8] She has an older brother, Frankie, who is also an actor.[9][10] She is of Italian descent.[11] Growing up, she took part in children's and community theater and attended North Broward Preparatory School.[12][13]
Career
2008–12: Beginnings and acting
In 2008, Grande played the role of Charlotte in the musical 13 on Broadway, for which she won a National Youth Theatre Association Award. When she joined the musical, Grande left her high school, North Broward Preparatory School, but continued to be enrolled. The school sent materials to her so she could study with tutors.[12][13] In 2010, she created the original role of Miriam in the reading of the new musical, Cuba Libre, written and produced by Desmond Child.[12] Grande played the character Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television show Victorious, which premiered March 2010. Grande was also featured in Dream Magazine as the cover girl for the August 2011 issue.[14] In 2011, Ariana voiced an animated fairy, Princess Diaspro, on the Nickelodeon series Winx Club and starred as Snow White along with Charlene Tilton and Neil Patrick Harris in the Pasadena Playhouse production of a pantomime, A Snow White Christmas, on December 13–23, 2012.[15]
In August 2012, it was also announced that Victorious was ending its run.[16] Grande tweeted stating that she was not hoping for it to end and was looking forward to being on both shows. It was announced during the network's presentation at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on August 3, 2012 that Sam & Cat, which would pair Grande from Victorious and Jennette McCurdy from iCarly together in a traditional "buddy sitcom" setting, where they would reprise their roles as Cat Valentine and Sam Puckett.[17] Sam & Cat was picked up by Nickelodeon on November 29, 2012.[18] On July 11, 2013, Nickelodeon doubled Sam & Cat's season one twenty episode order, leading to season one having forty episodes.[19]
Grande sang as a soloist in various symphonies, such as South Florida’s Philharmonic, Pops and Symphonic Orchestras.[3] She has sung various times in NYC's Birdland.[3] Grande performed a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the first-ever broadcast of the national anthem for the Florida Panthers NHL hockey team.[3][12] Grande has performed covers of songs such as Mariah Carey's "Emotions" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You",[20][21] and Whitney Houston's "I Believe in You and Me".[22] The third and final soundtrack for Victorious was released on November 6, 2012, titled as Victorious 3.0. The first single was called "LA Boyz" (which was performed by Grande and Justice) and the music video was released October 18, 2012. In 2012, Grande also sang a duet with MIKA on the single version of his track Popular Song.[23]
2013–present: Yours Truly
On March 26, 2013, Grande's first single from her debut album, "The Way" featuring Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, was released.[24][25][26] "The Way" sold over 120,000 units in the first 48 hours[27][28] and went on to sell over 219,000 units in its opening week; the third best first-week sales figure of 2013, behind Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" and One Direction's "Best Song Ever".[29] "The Way" debuted at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on the week ending in April 5, 2013, marking the first top ten arrival for a lead female artist making her first Hot 100 appearance since 2008. The single has since sold two million copies in the United States and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. Grande was eventually sued by Minder Music for allegedly copying lyrics from the 1972 song "Troglodyte" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch in the song.[30] "Baby I" and "Right There", featuring Detroit rapper Big Sean, were also later released as singles.[31][32] Grande completed her first studio album, Yours Truly, in June 2013[33] and it was released on September 2, 2013 in the UK, a day later in the US.[34] The album was inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, and Madonna, with unreleased collaborations with SkyBlu of LMFAO, 3OH!3, Kool Kojak, and Pebe Sebert.[35][36][37] Yours Truly officially debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with 138,000 copies sold in its first week, becoming Grande's first number-one album as a solo artist.[38][39][40] This made her the fifteenth female artist to have their first album debut atop of the charts, and the first the first since Kesha with Animal (2010).[41][42] Yours Truly reached the top 10 in Australia,[43] the UK,[44] Ireland[45] and the Netherlands.[46] Following the release of the album, Grande was ranked number four on the Billboard list of "Music's Hottest Minors in 2013."[47]
Swindle, an adaptation of the novel of the same name, by Gordon Korman, saw Grande play Amande Benson along with Sam & Cat co-star Jennette McCurdy, and premiered on Nickelodeon in August.[48][49] Grande performed at the MTV Video Music Awards, on Dancing with the Stars with Mika[50] and at the American Music Awards, where she won the award for New Artist Of The Year[51] and was the most mentioned artist on Twitter of the night, having been mentioned in 231,966 tweets.[52] Her performance of her hit "The Way" and her song "Tattooed Heart" earned praise from celebrities like Kelly Clarkson and Lady Gaga, and she was hailed by the press for her high vocal range.[53]
Preceding the release of her Christmas EP, Christmas Kisses in December, she gave a series of performances, including at the 87th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,[54][55] NBC New York's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting broadcast,[56][57] the KIIS-FM Jingle Ball in Los Angeles' Staples Center and Z100's Jingle Ball event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.[58] She also sang at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, with Big Sean and Mac Miller.[59]
In January 2014, Grande confirmed reports that recording had begun for her second studio album[60][61] and has been working with Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco.[62]
Artistry
"I love Mariah Carey. She is literally my favorite human being on the planet. And of course Whitney [Houston] as well. As far as vocal influences go, Whitney and Mariah pretty much cover it. I love Fergie as well. She’s just so fun and passionate. I love that she raps as well. Like, she has a fantastic voice and she can belt Gs and As and she doesn’t have to do it all the time. She just has swag and I think that’s really cool.
Grande possesses a four octave range reaching a high of E7, Light lyric soprano's vocal range[64][65] Her voice has been compared to that of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.[66][67] Ariana expressed her feelings towards being compared to Mariah Carey as a "blessing",[68] and often cites both Carey and Houston as influences for her work.[12][63][69] Grande has cited Cuban-American superstar Gloria Estefan as the person who inspired her to pursue a career in the music industry, after Estefan complimented a performance she saw Grande give on a cruise ship when she was eight years old.[70] Other notable influences Grande has referenced include Fergie, Christina Aguilera, India.Arie, Imogen Heap and Amy Winehouse.[63][69][71] Grande also references Big Sean as her favorite rapper, with whom she is good friends.[72]
Her music is generally pop and contemporary R&B, and has features of funk, dance, and hip hop.[72][73] She grew up mainly listening to urban pop and 90s music.[69][72] Grande's debut is described as being half a "throwback" to the R&B music of the 1990s, and the second half she describes as "something that is very unique and very special that I've sort of written" which is completely original. In summation of the record she stated: "So half of it is a throwback and like very familiar feeling, feel good, and then half of it is something that I've created that's sort of special and unique and refreshing and wonderful and I love it".[74]
Personal life
From August 2012 to July 2013, Grande dated Jai Brooks, a member of the Australian YouTube group the Janoskians.[75][76][77] In September 2013, after much speculation, Grande confirmed that she was in a relationship with The Wanted's Nathan Sykes. Sykes also tweeted out the news to his fans and thanked everyone for being so lovely about it.[78][79] In October 2013, Brooks accused Grande of cheating on him with Sykes before their relationship ended,[80] a claim she later denied.[81][better source needed] In late January 2014, Grande confirmed in a radio interview that her and Sykes had decided to end their approximately five month long relationship, but insisted that they remain close friends.[82]
Grande is a vegan[83] and has adopted three dogs.[84] She was raised a Roman Catholic but has since abandoned Christianity after Pope Benedict reportedly labelled homosexuality and working women as 'sins'.[85] Grande stated, "I lost faith when the Pope decided to tell me that everything I loved and believed in was wrong. I needed something else to believe in." She has since converted to Kabbalah, believing "the basis lies in the idea that if you’re kind to others, good things will happen to you."[86] [87]
Philanthropy
At the age of ten, Grande co-founded the South Florida youth singing group Kids Who Care, which performed for charitable fund-raising events, raising over $500,000 for charities in 2007 alone.[12] In the summer of 2009, as a member of the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa, Grande performed and taught music and dance to children in Gugulethu, South Africa along with her brother Frankie.[4][9][88] Grande is also partnering with Kleenex on its "Shield Sneeze Swish" campaign.[89]
After watching Blackfish, she urged fans to stop supporting SeaWorld.[90]
