Big Local in Gateshead 2013
Big Local is an exciting opportunity for residents in 150 areas around England to use at least £1m to make a massive and lasting positive difference to their communities. It's about bringing together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live. Big Local is being run by Local Trust, which is working with over £200m from the Big Lottery Fund and a range of partners providing expert advice and support for residents. The four programme outcomes for Big Local are: - Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them. - People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future. - The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises. - People will feel that their area is an even better place to live. What's it not about? It's NOT about your local authority, the government or a national organisation telling you what to do. It's NOT about individual groups fixing their favourite problem without talking to a wide range of different people who live and work in the community. It's NOT about short-term thinking -- you've got 10 years or more to plan and deliver the best options for your area. Great Street Games - Gateshead
The 'Great Street Games' was a giant, networked inter-city game played between Gateshead, Middlesbrough and Sunderland (all in the North East of England) between 28th October and 1st November 2009.
The piece was created to explore a sense of connection and playfulness in multiple urban open spaces, using only projected light and sound.
The essence of the game was to knock the pucks of light into the goals at each end of the playing area, when they would be instantly transferred to the playing area in another city.
This footage is from Baltic Square, Gateshead. I'm working on an edit at the moment with all cities, but I thought this moment captured the spirit of the piece well and was worth uploading in its unedited state.
More information about the piece can be found at www.greatstreetgames.org.uk . It was commissioned by the Great North Run cultural programme www.greatnorthrunculture.org

Team: Dan Fells, Andy Spence, Vadim Charles, John Human, Fareen Farid
Squint developed a graphic style of rendering and animation to clearly communicate the key ideas behind their teams proposals in the bid to win a large commission to build and manage a swathe of new housing in Gateshead in the north of England.
The competition commission was to take on the task of re-inventing the cities residential housing sector, to diversify and upgrade the regional market. The film was the cherry on the cake in their presentation to the local government. In the words of the client: "To say that it ‘wowed’ Gateshead would be an understatement!!".
The team won the competition and secured on-going work for the next few decades.

Gateshead Car Park Demolition
Gatesheads Trinity Square car park (known by many as the Get Carter Car Park or Gateshead Multi Storey Car Park) was built from designs by Owen Luder (subsequently RIBA President) and opened in 1967, five years on from the drawing board. The building towers above Gateshead town centre (being the tallest building in the town centre by quite a margin). The car park is an example of the Brutalist style of architecture (raw exposed concrete defining the character of the building and its exterior). The top floor of the building featured a space for a cafe-bar with views of Gateshead and Newcastle however, it was never used. By the time the car park was constructed, its design was already out of date and unfashionable. Its outdoor shopping precinct quickly became outdated with shoppers preferring indoor precincts. Rather than becoming the centre of its community public opinion has called for its demolition (the building was listed in Britain"s top 10 worst buildings) and the car park is instead famous for the role it plays in the 1971 gangster movie "Get Carter". Following decades of deterioration the decision was made to demolish the car park structure, the indoor market that lies below and associated properties on High Street, Ellison Street and the adjacent Trinity Square, allowing for a new city centre development.
Following an extensive pre-tender interview process and a successful tender submission Thompsons were awarded the contract. The project follows on from other major Gateshead / Newcastle demolition projects undertaken by Thompsons, and which include Tyne Tees Television (made famous by the live music series The Tube), Westgate House (formerly listed as one of Britain"s top 10 worst buildings), Wellbar House, Eldon Square, City Library, Binns Department Store and the Majestic Ballrooms.
Works commenced with the removal of asbestos and the soft strip of fittings and fixtures of the shops located adjacent to the car park. Demolition works were phased and commenced with the reduction of the low level shops which surrounded the car park, along Ellison Street, Trinity Square and High Street. Demolitions progressed to the former in-door market which was located below the structure. Following completion of initial works demolitions will complete the reduction of the multi-storey car park structure itself. Thompsons newly acquired Komatsu 750 super high reach 360o excavator machine will assist our Caterpillar 350 high reach machine to demolish the car park, working top to bottom in a pre-determined sequence. Demolitions commenced at 9 am on 27/7/10 and will be captured by time lapse photography throughout.

Gateshead vs Oxford United 0-1, FA Cup First Round Proper 2013-14 highlights
League Two table-toppers Oxford United are through to the Second Round Proper of The FA Cup after Dean Smalley's extra-time penalty earned them a 1-0 replay win at Gateshead. Smalley's winner, which was struck less than two minutes after James Marwood hit the post for Gateshead, ensured a memorable evening for the 98 travelling Oxford fans, and secured a Second Round trip to Wrexham on Monday. Oxford, who had recovered from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw in the two sides' initial meeting last month, endured a tricky evening at the International Stadium, with the hosts firing 24 shots over the course of 120 minutes. Gateshead produced the first opportunity of the evening, but Josh Walker could only sky his effort over the bar after meeting Craig Baxter's cross. The visitors threatened shortly afterwards, with Scott Davies thumping the ball over following a neat lay-off from James Constable. Marwood and Josh Walker also came close, but the two sides went into the interval on level terms. Oxford came desperately close to breaking the deadlock within four minutes of the restart, but Jamie Chandler was on hand to clear Ryan Williams' goalbound header off the line. The visitors were thankful for Matt Bevans late on as the defender blocked John Oster's effort from close range. Ninety minutes failed to separate the two sides, and Gateshead appeared to take the lead in the tenth minute of extra-time. Colin Larkin slotted the ball beyond Ryan Clarke but saw his strike ruled out by the linesman's flag. With six minutes left on the clock Marwood was desperately unlucky to see his acrobatic effort crash off the post. And things were to get worse for Gateshead moments later as James Curtis clumsily felled Ryan Williams, leaving referee Paul Tierney with no option but to point to the spot. Smalley stepped up and coolly sent Adam Bartlett the wrong way to book Oxford's place in the next phase. Gateshead: Bartlett; Baxter, Sirrell, Turnbull, Curtis; Clark, Oster (Tait 117), Chandler (Ramshaw 115), Larkin; Walker (Hatch 118), Marwood. Subs not used: Magnay, Baird, Brown, Maddison. Oxford United: Clarke; Bevans, Lynn, Davies (Smalley 68), Hunt; Newey, Williams, Rose (Long 99), Constable; Kitson (Marsh 105), Ruffles. Subs not used: Crocombe, Shama, O'Dowda, Lee.
