"The Thieving Hand", 1908, directed by J. Stuart Blackton, is a very unusual short comedy film. Interestingly enough, this five minute film is actually funnier than most of the Sennett (Keystone Studios) films made in the following decade.
The film starts with a one-armed beggar finding a rich guy's wallet. Since he's an honest man, he returns the wallet. The rich guy is so impressed that he takes the beggar to a shop to buy him the latest and most functional prosthetic arm. It can actually move and function much like a real arm but with one glaring exception! The arm has a thieving mind of its own and steals everything in the most amazingly deft and funny fashion. It's really funny to see the honest beggar trying to stop this evil arm! Ultimately, though, he's accused of stealing and sent to jail. There, the thieving are continues on its original ways in a very cute conclusion.
Does a limb contain vestiges of the mind from the body it came from? This movie was done well before several things we have today like transplants and stem-cell things, but that just makes it creepier. Why, for instance, would that arm be there? How did it get separated from its owner? This is not a film to make sense, but to be fascinated by. Overall, it uses stop-motion animation and double-exposures brilliantly, and the acting is even more brilliant (when the man is using his arm to steal stuff while the rest of his body continues to beg). It's certainly well-done, it just isn't really meant to make much sense.

"The Enchanted Tramp" Remake: Summary
Melody Ritchey, Sarah Trice, Anthony Watkins, and Mark Young
The Enchanted Drawing is a silent film from 1900 directed by J. Stuart Blackton and produced by Thomas Edison with Vitagraph Studios. We chose this film because we thought that it well represented the magical nature of early films achieved through the use of editing. Our film maintains this original charm. The entire sequence was filmed in one shot, and the magic was later created during editing (the images from the drawing literally come to life and are then put back onto the canvas). Other post-production work included shortening the film by doubling its speed, applying a projection effect, and the addition of an intentionally lighthearted soundtrack to match the comical narrative. The most time-consuming part of the process was preparing the canvas with drawn objects that would match the size, shape, and shade of the real objects and then figuring out how to align the two. The method of "erasing" the drawings was another challenge. In terms of the narrative, we decided to take a spin on the original plot by incorporating a tramp character to pay homage to silent film star Charlie Chaplin. Along with the playful elements previously mentioned, the tramp adds humor to the film through physical comedy. He is a nuisance to the artist, taking her artwork and causing her to chase after it (and, in the end, chase after him for all of his mischief)! We want to give a special thanks to Wilmer Singleton for his outstanding acting as the star of the film. The end result is one minute of amusing footage honoring the original.

The historical records concerning William Shakespeare’s life reveal many strange paradoxes. While the records from the theatrical world in London show that he worked as an actor and playwright, the contemporary documentation from Stratford-upon-Avon reveals no theatrical or literary interests of any kind. No record exists of Shakespeare receiving an education, buying a single book or writing poems or plays. Over the years this enigma has led to speculation that Shakespeare was not the author of the plays attributed to him. Various candidates have been proposed as the “real” author, such as the English statesman Francis Bacon and the earls of Oxford and Derby, whom it has been speculated used Shakespeare as a frontman as they wished for various reasons to remain anonymous. The only problem with this theory is that it makes no sense. Why pick a frontman who seems to have had no literary connections - at least none that he advertised in Stratford-upon-Avon?

The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. Though classified as a comedy in the First Folio and sharing certain aspects with Shakespeare's other romantic comedies, the play is perhaps most remembered for its dramatic scenes, and is best known for Shylock and the famous "Hath not a Jew eyes?" speech. Also notable is Portia's speech about "the quality of mercy".
The title character is the merchant Antonio, not the Jewish moneylender Shylock, who is the play's most prominent and most famous character. This is made explicit by the title page of the first quarto: The most excellent History of the Merchant of Venice. With the extreme cruelty of Shylock the Jew towards the Merchant....

Music for the series was composed by Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Amerigo Moreno, Ray Noble and Leith Stevens. Other writers adapted to the series included Robert A. Heinlein, Sinclair Lewis, H. L. Mencken, Edgar Allan Poe, Frederik Pohl, James Thurber, Mark Twain and Thomas Wolfe.

Early examples of attempts to capture the phenomenon of motion into a still drawing can be found in paleolithic cave paintings, where animals are often depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions, clearly attempting to convey the perception of motion. [2]
An earthen goblet discovered at the site of the 5,200-year-old Burnt City in southeastern Iran, depicts what could possibly be the world’s oldest example of animation. The artifact bears five sequential images depicting a Persian Desert Ibex jumping up to eat the leaves of a tree.[3]
Ancient Chinese records contain several mentions of devices that were said to "give an impression of movement" to human or animal figures,[4] but these accounts are unclear and may only refer to the actual movement of the figures through space.[5]
In the 19th century, the phenakistoscope (1832), zoetrope (1834) and praxinoscope (1877), as well as the common flip book, were early animation devices that produced an illusion of movement from a series of sequential drawings, but animation did not develop further until the advent of motion picture film and cinematography in the 1890s.
The cinématographe was a projector, printer, and camera in one machine that allowed moving pictures to be shown successfully on a screen which was invented by history's earliest film makers, Auguste and Louis Lumière, in 1894.[6] The first animated projection (screening) was created in France, by Charles-Émile Reynaud, who was a French science teacher. Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877 and the Théâtre Optique in December 1888. On 28 October 1892, he projected the first animation in public, Pauvre Pierrot, at the Musée Grévin in Paris. This film is also notable as the first known instance of film perforations being used. His films were not photographed, but drawn directly onto the transparent strip. In 1900, more than 500,000 people had attended these screenings.
A projecting praxinoscope, 1882, here shown superimposing an animated figure on a separately projected background scene
The first film that was recorded on standard picture film and included animated sequences was the 1900 Enchanted Drawing,[7] which was followed by the first entirely animated film - the 1906 Humorous Phases of Funny Faces by J. Stuart Blackton,[8] who, because of that, is considered the father of American animation.
The first animated film created by using what came to be known as traditional (hand-drawn) animation - the 1908 Fantasmagorie by Émile Cohl
Charlie in Turkey (1916), an animated film by Pat Sullivan for Keen Cartoon Corporation.
In Europe, the French artist, Émile Cohl, created the first animated film using what came to be known as traditional animation creation methods - the 1908 Fantasmagorie.[9] The film largely consisted of a stick figure moving about and encountering all manner of morphing objects, such as a wine bottle that transforms into a flower. There were also sections of live action in which the animator’s hands would enter the scene. The film was created by drawing each frame on paper and then shooting each frame onto negative film, which gave the picture a blackboard look.
The author of the first puppet-animated film (The Beautiful Lukanida (1912)) was the Russian-born (ethnically Polish) director Wladyslaw Starewicz, known as Ladislas Starevich.[citation needed]
The more detailed hand-drawn animations, requiring a team of animators drawing each frame manually with detailed backgrounds and characters, were those directed by Winsor McCay, a successful newspaper cartoonist, including the 1911 Little Nemo, the 1914 Gertie the Dinosaur, and the 1918 The Sinking of the Lusitania.[10]
During the 1910s, the production of animated short films, typically referred to as "cartoons", became an industry of its own and cartoon shorts were produced for showing in movie theaters. The most successful producer at the time was John Randolph Bray, who, along with animator Earl Hurd, patented the cel animation process which dominated the animation industry for the rest of the decade.
El Apóstol (Spanish: "The Apostle") was a 1917 Argentine animated film utilizing cutout animation, and the world's first animated feature film.[11] Unfortunately, a fire that destroyed producer Frederico Valle's film studio incinerated the only known copy of El Apóstol, and it is now considered a lost film.
Computer animation has become popular since Toy Story (1995), the first feature-length animated film completely made using this technique.
In 2008, the animation market was worth US$68.4 billion.[12] Animation as an art and industry continues to thrive as of the mid-2010s, because well-made animated projects can find audiences across borders and in all four quadrants. Animated feature-length films returned the highest gross margins (around 52%) of all film genres in the 2004-2013 timeframe.[13]
