Powered by Restream https://restream.io
Sweet Tea Shakespeare returns with a digital production of the delightful Elizabethan comedy Mucedorus, a play sometimes (inaccurately) attributed to Shakespeare. The production is our first return to digital, Zoom-based shows since the summer of 2021 and is directed by Shakespearean scholar and practitioner, Claire Kimball.

The play opens with a flyting between the allegorical personifications of Comedy and Envy, in which Envy declares that he will turn this pleasant comedy into a tragedy. The play opens with a flyting between the allegorical personifications of Comedy and Envy, in which Envy declares that he will turn this pleasant comedy into a tragedy. However, mirth triumphs in the end.
The clown of the play, Mouse, is introduced in the second scene. He enters having fled from feeding his master’s horse, frightened by a bear. In his attempt to escape, he advances backwards and trips over the bear, before fleeing in terror.
Segasto, who is going to marry Amadine, leaves her when they are being chased by a bear. But she is saved by Mucedorus, who kills the bear. Amadine thanks him and invites him to the court of Aragon. From there, adventures and mishaps lead Mucedorus and Amandine to fall in love, be torn apart, and ultimately find each other again. Sweet Tea Shakespeare frequently trims its performances for runtime, but this production will be based on the Mucedorus full text.
SWEET TEA SHAKESPEARE ZOOM PRODUCTIONS
Sweet Tea Shakespeare revives its digital productions in 22-23 after its “digital pivot” during the COVID-19 pandemic that caused theatre companies worldwide to shut their doors. During this time, Sweet Tea Shakespeare adopted an ambitious digital production schedule with artists from all over the nation and the world. Mucedorus is the first visit back to our digital communities that helped sustain us so generously during the pandemic.
Digital productions join our streaming in-person production offerings, podcasts, and video streams held throughout the year as we seek to build community and gather diverse communities around a common table to delight in the magic of story, song, and stagecraft.
Sweet Tea Shakespeare’s offerings are sponsored by generous grants from the Arts Council of Fayetteville & Cumberland County, with funding provided by the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
