30: Jim Ede’s Way of Life | Slightly Foxed
In this twentieth-century story of a quest for beauty, the writer Laura Freeman introduces us to Jim Ede, a man who, in creating Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, changed the way we look at art. We follow Jim from the trenches of the First World War to Lady Ottoline Morrell’s literary parties in Bloomsbury and a curating job at the Tate. He collected artworks by his friends Ben Nicholson and David Jones, acquired the estate of the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and designed a house in Tangiers that became a sanctuary for soldiers. These were stepping stones towards Jim turning derelict slum cottages into a home and gallery, a space for both tea and tours. And, as ever, we share recommendations for reading off the beaten track.

Supporting Kettle's Yard
In 1966 Jim Ede gifted Kettle’s Yard to the University of Cambridge and from this original philanthropic donation we have continued to grow thanks to the generous support we have received from individuals, foundations and companies.
However, every year Kettle’s Yard must find over 50% of it’s income from external sources. We rely on the generosity of trusts, foundations, companies and many individuals to sustain and develop Kettle’s Yard for current and future generations.
This short film showcases the importance of philanthropic support to Kettle’s Yard.

Kettle's Yard, Cambridge
The Art Channel visits Kettle's Yard an influential collection of British and International modern art, housed in a set of restored Cambridge cottages. Founded by the curator Jim Ede and his wife Helen, the aim was to create a 'living place where works of art could be enjoyed'. This is a home where beauty can be appreciated in a spiral arrangement of pebbles or in a tiny painting by Miro. It continues to be an inspirational museum for its simplicity and belief in the value of art.

House & Garden presents Houses with History from Kettle’s Yard, the University of Cambridge’s modern and contemporary art gallery. Join interior designer Virginia White as we tour Kettle’s Yard, a modest set of cottages that was transformed into a light-filled home and art lover’s paradise in the 1950s and 1960s.
Bequeathed to the University of Cambridge by the art curator Jim Ede and his wife Helen, Kettle’s Yard is now maintained as a museum filled with clever displays of art and objects. Watch as Virginia takes us on a tour of the interiors, explaining the lessons she has learned about collecting and displaying art, and what you can take away for your own adventures in decoration.
