Reading Po Chu-i (Bai Juyi) - Part One
'Goring to the Mountains with a little Dancing Girl, Aged Fifteen'
(written when the poet was about sixty-five)
Translated from the Chinese by Arthur Waley
It cuts out at the end when I'm about to read Waley's footnote that the song mentioned in the poem, the 'Willow Branches,' is "A plaintive love-song, to which Po Chu-i had himself written words."

A SONG OF UNENDING SORROW (Part 1)
~Bai Juyi
The beauty-loving monarch longed year after year
To find a beautiful lady without a peer.
A maiden of the Yangs to womanhood just grown,
In inner chambers bred, to the world was unknown
Endowed with natural beauty too hard to hide,
She was chosen one day to be the monarch's bride.
Turning her head, she smiled so sweet and full of grace
That she outshone in six palaces the fairest face.
She bathed in glassy water of warm-fountain Pool
Which laved and smoothed her creamy skin when spring was cool
Without her maids' support, she was too tired to move,
And this was when she first received the monarch's love.
Flower-like face and cloud-like hair, golden headdressed,
In lotus-adorned curtain she spent the night blessed.
She slept till sun rose high for the blessed night was short,
From then on the monarch held no longer morning court.
In revels as in feasts she shared her lord's delight,
His companion on trips and his mistress at night.
In inner palace dwelt three thousand ladies fair,
On her alone was lavished royal love and care.
Her beauty served the night when dressed up in Golden Bower,
She was drunk with wine and apring at banquet in jade Tower.
Her sisters and brothers all received rank and fief
And honors showered on her household, to the grief
Of fathers and mothers who would rather give birth
To a fair maiden than to any son on earth,
The lofty palace towered high into blue cloud,
With divine music borne on the breeze, the air was loud.
Seeing slow dance and hearing fluted or stringed song,
The emperor was never tired all the day long.
But rebels beat their war drums, making the earth quake
And "Song of Rainbow Skirt and Coat of Feathers" break.
A cloud of dust was raised o'er city walls nine-fold:
Thousands of chariots and horsemen southwestward rolled.
Imperial flags moved slowly now and halted then,
And thirty miles from Western Gate they stopped again.
Six armies would not march--what could be done?--with speed
Unless the Lady Yang be killed before the steed.
None would pick up her hairpin fallen on ground
Nor golden bird nor comb with which her head was crowned.
The monarch could not save her, hid his face in fear,
Turning his head, he saw her blood mix with his tear.
The yellow dust widespread, the wind blew desolate,
A serpentine plank path led to cloud-capped Sword Gate.
Below the Eyebrows Mountains wayfarers were few,
In fading sunlight royal standards lost their hue.
On western waters blue and Western mountains green,
The monarch's heart was daily gnawed by a sorrow keen.
The moon viewed from his tent shed a soul-searing light;
The bells heard in night rain made a heart-rending sound.
Suddenly turned the tide: returning from his flight,
The monarch could not tear himself away from the ground
Where 'mid the clods beneath the Slope he couldn't forget
The fair-faced lady Yang who was unfairly slain.
He looked at his countries with tears his robe was wet,
They rode east to the capital but with loose rein.
Come back, he found her pond and garden in old place,
With lotus in the lake and willows by the hall.
Willow leaves like her brows and lotus like her face,
At the sight of all these, how could his tears not fall.

The Old Harp
Based on the Chinese poem 'The Old Harp', this associative film explores the interplay between the Dutch poet J. Slauerhoff (1898-1936), the Chinese poet Bai Juyi (772-846) and the sound of the traditional Chinese harp, the guzheng. Inspired by his poetry, Slauerhoff considered Bai Juyi to be his soulmate. By integrating historic film material with contemporary images, this filmic poem continues the timeless reflection on the relationship between East and West in images, words and sound. The filmic installation The Old Harp was shown at the Dutch Culture Centre, World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

Setsugekka - Machigerita 「Sub Esp」
Nota:

Sudi (蘇堤 / 苏堤) nach Su Dongpo Baidi (白堤) nach Bai Juyi

Song of the Lute Player/琵琶行 (song based on the eponymous poem)
Recently banished from the capital city of Tang dynasty (June 18, 618--June 4, 907) China, the poet BAI Juyi (白居易,772-846) was seeing off his friends by the riverbank on an autumn night. There, in a remote city almost devoid of proper music, he had a romantic encounter with a pipa (Chinese lute) player, who used to be a prima donna in the capital during her youth.
On hearing the touching pipa tune and the tragic life story in her fading years, BAI, the poet, likened her misfortunes to his own demotion after his loss of imperial favor. There could have been a resonance among the poet, the pipa artist, and Grizabella of the musical Cats, who sang "Memory. All alone in the moonlight/I can smile at the old days/Life was beautiful then/I remember the time I knew what happiness was/Let the memory live again."
He promised her a "Song of the Lute Player" (琵琶行, which turns out to be one of the most read long poems in the Chinese language) to immortalize such a maudlin night by the riverbank.
Here is a song that I wrote, based on the words of BAI Juyi's poem "Song of the Lute Player". It is a quartet of flute (representing the poet), violin (the pipa artist), steel string guitar (the pipa) and harp (the boat in the river water). As the story unfolds, different parts play the tune at higher or lower keys.
The poem-based pictures were drawn by the late artist FANG Rending (方人定,1901-1975) and are widely circulated on and off the Internet. The English version of the poem was due to Prof. XU Yuanzhong (許淵沖, b.1921), who translated an anthology of 300 Tang dynasty poems from Chinese into English.
[As a side note, the poet BAI Juyi is well known for his poetry that shows sympathy for women in misfortune, either of humble or noble origin. In parallel to the "Song of the Lute Player", BAI has written another long poem "Song of Forever Sorrow" (長恨歌) to account for a sad love story in the imperial palace of Tang dynasty China, which in turn, would partly inspire the world's (arguably) first full-length novel: Murasaki Shikibu's "The Tale of Genji" (written ca. 1000 in Japanese).]
This is a vocal version. An instrumental version of the same song is also available on my channel as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATtirY3jEXM

Nostalgic Memories of the Southern Shore/憶江南 (Vocal)
During his retirement, the poet BAI Juyi (白居易,772-846) would fondly recall his former posts in the cities of Hangzhou (822-824) and Suzhou (825-827), two cultural hubs in Southern China.
At age 67, BAI wrote three lyric poems (viewed alternatively, three stanzas of a single song) to recollect his memories of the twin cities in the Yangtze River Delta. The first stanza summarizes his overall impression of his stay on the southern shore of the Yangtze River:
"Fair southern shore
With scenes I much adore;
At sunrise riverside flowers more red than fire,
In spring green river waves grow as blue as sapphire,
Which I can't but admire"
(Translated by XU Yuanzhong)
The next two stanzas are devoted to Hangzhou and Suzhou, respectively. As the author goes on to detail the natural landscapes and cultural attractions, the song culminates in the poet's nostalgic memories of southern wine and southern women (which are common poetic metaphors for worldly obsessions).
-------------
* BAI Juyi's lyric poem trio "Nostalgic Memories of the Southern Shore" (《憶江南》) has been set to music many a time (see, for example, the videos that Youtube provided in the section "Suggestions"). The music shown here is my own independent work.
* The cultural themes in BAI's three lyric poems are shared by the late Chinese artist CHEN Yifei (陳逸飛,1946-2005), whose vivid portrayal of Chinese villages and women in oil paintings gives visual interpretations for the poetic thought of BAI's.
* The three lyric poems of BAI Juyi shown here follow the format of 3-5-7-7-5 characters (equivalently: Chinese syllables) per line. It would be interesting to compare this pattern to the chōka (長歌, "long poem") and tanka (短歌, "short poem") in the Japanese waka (和歌) poetry, which alternate between 5 and 7 morae per line, and also to the Japanese haiku (俳句), famous for its 5-7-5 format.

6. Poetic Singing: Song of the Lute
Poet: BAI Juyi Translation: YANG Xianyi and DAI Naidie Composer: LIAN Bo

Accompanists: Shenshen Zhang, Su-Chen Liu, Mark Kuo, Emily Wong
MAO Zedong loves Chinese classical literature, yet had trouble reading due to impaired vision in his last years. The contemporary Administer of Culture YU Huiyong, an ingenious composer and Chinese music scholar, was commanded to produce a collection of songs from classical poetry for MAO exclusively. Master YU summoned the top scholars of traditional literature and music, along with the best composers, instrumentalists, and Chinese opera performers to fulfill this special assignment. These recordings are great treasures in Chinese performing arts history, but have been locked away in archive since MAO's death in 1976. The poetic singings in this concert are selected from those works.
