Glenn Greenwald on Bradley Manning: Prosecutor Overreach Could Turn All Whistleblowing Into Treason
http://www.democracynow.org - As we broadcast from the Freedom to Connect conference, we look at one whistleblower who used the Internet to reveal the horrors of war: U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning. Military prosecutors have decided to bring the maximum charges against Manning after he admitted during a pre-trial hearing last week to the largest leak of state secrets in U.S. history. In a bid to secure a reduced sentence, Manning acknowledged on the stand that he gave classified documents to WikiLeaks in order to show the American public the "true costs of war" and "spark a debate about foreign policy." Manning pleaded guilty to reduced charges on 10 counts, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. But instead of accepting that plea, military prosecutors announced Friday th...

Glenn Greenwald Reports on Bradley Manning's Military Pre-Trial Hearing
DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! interviews constitutional lawyer and Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald about the military pre-trial hearing now underway for alleged U.S. Army whistleblower Bradley Manning, who has been accused for releasing classified U.S. documents to WikiLeaks. Greenwald comments on the possible strategy being put forth by Manning's defense. "All the Manning [tribunal] hearings have been shrouded in secrecy," Greenwald says, noting there may be more transparency in Guantánamo detainee hearings than there has been for the Manning tribunal. "Presumably, his lawyer believes that one of the best ways they have to keep him out of prison for the next six decades is to argue that he had diminished capacity by virtue of emotional distress over the gender struggles that he had,...

The Glen - Bradley Joseph - Narada Piano Stories
"The Glen" is a composition by pianist Bradley Joseph and is not included on any of his original albums. It was written exclusively for the 1998 Narada compilation album, "Stories (A Narada Artist Collection)", in which "Extraordinary performers reveal their artistic inspirations in deeply personal instrumental memoirs". This song later appears on the 2001 Narada compilation release, "20 Years of Narada Piano". Copyright-free images from http://commons.wikimedia.org

From the album liner, this is the story behind writing "The Glen":
"My father never traveled much until late in life, and he told me he regretted not having those experiences to call upon through his years. So when I drove from Minnesota to Los Angeles at age 23, I was thrilled not only by...

Manning pleaded guilty to reduced charges on 10 counts, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. But instead of accepting that plea, military prosecutors announced Friday they will seek to imprison Manning for life without parole on charges that include aiding the enemy. Manning's court-martial is scheduled to begin in June. We speak with Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald, who has long covered the case, about what this means for Manning, and its broader implications for whistleblowers and the journalists they often approach.

"He is, and I don't blame him at all, trying to do whatever he can to avoid having his life destroyed: Either being killed by the state or locked up in a cage for the rest of his life."

"Heading west on a winding road from Las Vegas at twilight, I found myself in a rose-colored canyon unlike any glen I had ever seen. I pulled over, jumped up on the warm hood of my rusty '77 Malibu, and my tired eyes watched night fall over the Mojave Desert for the first time. The jagged horizon and chilling breeze spoke to me in common terms: loneliness and vulnerability, promise and beauty. I'll never forget that sunset."

Bradley Joseph is an American composer, arranger, and producer of contemporary instrumental music. His compositions include works for orchestra, quartet, and solo piano, while his musical style ranges from "quietly pensive mood music to a rich orchestration of classical depth and breadth". Active since 1983, he played various instruments in rock bands throughout the Midwest until 1989 when Greek composer Yanni hired him for his next tour after hearing a tape of Joseph's compositions. He was a featured concert keyboardist with Yanni through six major tours, and appears in the 1994 multi-platinum album and video Yanni Live at the Acropolis. He reunited with Yanni in 2003 for the 60-city Ethnicity tour. He also spent four years as musical director and lead keyboardist for Sheena Easton, including a 1995 performance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 1994, his solo career began when he independently released Hear the Masses, featuring many of his Yanni bandmates. This debut was followed by Rapture, an instrumental album recorded with a 50-piece orchestra, in which Joseph wrote and conducted all of the scores. It was released on the Narada label and reached New Age Voice (NAV)'s "Airwaves Top 30". He has produced 19 CDs/DVDs and numerous piano books under his own record label, Robbins Island Music. Two of these recordings, Christmas Around the World and One Deep Breath, also held positions on NAV's Top 100 radio chart. His music is included in multiple various-artist compilation albums, most recently the 2008 release of The Weather Channel Presents: Smooth Jazz II.
