September 4, 2010 - Xichang Satellite Launch Center. A Chinese communications satellite launched Saturday on a Long March rocket, beginning a mission to broadcast civil television and radio signals across China. Bolted on top of a 180-foot-tall Long March 3B rocket, the Chinasat 6A satellite lifted off from the Xichang space center in southwestern China's Sichuan province at 1614 GMT (12:14 pm EDT) Saturday. According to state-run media, the three-stage launcher deployed Chinasat 6A in a super-synchronous transfer orbit with a high point of more than 26000 miles, a low point of 122 miles and an inclination of 25 degrees. It was the fourth space launch in five weeks for China, which has now fired eight rockets into orbit since the beginning of the year. Chinasat 6A will use its own propulsion system to circularize its orbit at an altitude of 22300 miles above the equator near Indonesia. The satellite is designed to last 15 years delivering television and radio programming to customers across China, especially in remote and mountainous regions, according to the Xinhua news agency. China Satellite Communications Corp. will operate the satellite. Xinhua reported the new spacecraft will back up Chinasat 5C, another communications satellite that launched in 2007. Chinasat 6A was built by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. and is based on the DFH-4 communications satellite bus.

This is a relatively advanced part of China where the villages between the rice paddies appear neater and more prosperous than in other parts of the country. However, even among the rice paddies there aren't many scenes of Old China here and where they exist it's usually as a tourist attraction rather than the real thing. And there are few spots along the route where modern factories, highrise apartment buildings, suspension bridges, and expressways are not somewhere in view since the region around Shanghai, the city and its administrative area along with the two relatively small provinces to its north and south (Jiangsu and Zhejiang), has a population half the size of the entire United States and constitutes one of the wealthiest and most industrialized parts of China. Suzhou is a historic c**** city and center of silk production that Marco Polo compared to his native Venice on his visit 700 years ago. Suzhou's center is surrounded by walls and moats and remains quite well preserved while new modern highrise districts have been built on the city's outer fringes. Suzhou is most renowned nowadays for its ...

Chinasat is a family of communications satellites operated by the China Direct Broadcast Satellite Company. The series was previously operated by the China Satellite Communications Corporation, and before that the China Telecommunications Broadcast Satellite Corporation, which was owned by China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.
Satellites formerly operated by the Sino Satellite Communications Company and the China Orient Telecommunications Satellite Company were renamed with Chinasat designations following their mergers with the China Satellite Communications Corporation to form China DBSAT. ChinaStar 1 became Chinasat 5A, Sinosat-1 became Chinasat 5B, and Sinosat-3 became Chinasat 5C.
Chinasat 6B
The Chinasat 6B satellite was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space. It has 38 transponders, and will be used for improved radio and TV station transmissions across China, Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Oceania. It has a planned useful life of 15 years. Thales Alenia Space built the satellite with no components from the United States whatsoever. This allowed it to be launched on a Chinese launch vehicle without violating U.S. ITAR restrictions. The launch, on a Long March 3B rocket, was successfully conducted on 5 July 2007.
Chinasat 9
On 9 June 2008 the China Great Wall Industrial Corporation used a Long March 3B lifting off from Xichang pad LA-2 to launch Chinasat 9.
