Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film - 04 Hollywood Goes to War
Episode 4 of 13. Download Links: rapidshare.com rapidshare.com rapidshare.com rapidshare.com The outbreak of World War I provides Hollywood with a successful source for plots and profits. Peacetime curtails the release of war movies, until the release of King Vidor's The Big Parade in 1925. Wings (1927) earns the first Academy Award for Best Picture. As movies transition to sound, Universal releases Lewis Milestone's All Quiet on the Western Front, showing the German side of the conflict, becoming a powerful statement of war by the generation that fought it. Interviews include Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., King Vidor and Lillian Gish.

Doctor Zhivago - Scene on road
The scene right before Yuri (Dr. Zhivago) and Lara meet amidst the Bolshevik deserters who cross paths with a group of replacement soldiers on a road, a deliberate homage to King Vidor's "The Big Parade" (1925), reportedly one of David Lean's favourite films. A classic scene in its own right, but also both inspiring and hilarious - perhaps my favourite of the film. This idea of standing your ground also parallels nicely with the scene in Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel "Notes From Underground" (1864), when the Underground man triumphantly walks straight into an officer on the street, demonstrating his free will and preserving his dignity.

The big parade 1925. Escena de la bota.
Fragmento de la película "The big parade" de King Vidor, donde la despedida de la pareja protagónica, contrariamente al objetivo del director, arranca risas en el público contemporáneo (hecho comprobado empíricamente).

Tribute to RENEE ADOREE
Renee was a French actress who appeared in Hollywood silent movies during the 1920's. She is most famous for her role as 'Melisande' in the melodramatic romance war epic 'The Big Parade' (1925) which became one of MGM's biggest hits of all time and a film that historians rank as one of the best films made in the silent film era. Happy Feet - duet for bass saxophone & ukulele
Bass saxophone and ukulele duet : Happy Feet, composed back in 1930 by Ager & Yellen. Hein Overbeek - ukulele Bert Brandsma - bass saxophone Recorded at Hein's Place, July 24th, 2008. Assen, Netherlands. This was the last time we made a video using the Martin bass saxophone, since it is sold. Hein Overbeek & Bert Brandsma did a lot of gigs in their lives, and this was not one of them. They played in many legendary bands together, like : Het Fluitekruidt, Dutch Palladium Orchestra, Pax Jazzband, Fifty-Six, both were in the original line-up of the Dixieland Crackerjacks Marching Band, in 1994. All that may be true, but this was the very first time they actually played together with this instrumental combination. Before this, Hein used to play banjo and Bert did a lot of work on either alto saxophone or Clarinet. Jack Selig Yellen (Jacek Jeleń) (July 6, 1892 - April 17, 1991) was an American lyricist and screenwriter. Born in Poland, Yellen emigrated with his family to the United States when he was five years old. He grew up in Buffalo, New York and began writing songs in high school. He graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 1913 and after graduating became a reporter for the Buffalo Courier, continuing to write songs on the side. Yellen's first collaborator on a song was George L. Cobb, with whom he wrote a number of Dixie songs including "Alabama Jubilee," "Are You From Dixie?," and "All Aboard for Dixieland." He is best remembered for his collaboration ...

Bourbon Street Parade - Chris Barber signature tune, version 2011
Signature tune of the Chris Barber band. Here played in Ulm, Germany. March 14. 2011. Ulmer Theater. Chris Barber - trombone, vocals Bob Hunt - trombone Mike "Magic'' Henry - trumpet Peter Rudeforth - trumpet, vocal Bert Brandsma - clarinet Richard Exall - alto saxophone David Horniblow - tenor saxophone Joe Farler - banjo Jackie Flavelle - bass guitar Gregor Beck - drums One of the top New Orleans drummers, Paul Barbarin was also quite significant as both a bandleader (his groups almost always boasted high musicianship) and as a composer. He wrote "Bourbon Street Parade" and "The Second Line". Part of a large musical family, Paul's father Isadore played brass instruments; three of his brothers were musicians (including Louis, who was also a fine drummer), and his nephew was banjoist Danny Barker. Paul started on clarinet before saving up enough money to buy a set of drums. He played in many important New Orleans groups, including the Silver Leaf Orchestra and the Young Olympia Band, and early on developed a basic, straightforward style that was perfectly suitable for both parades and dances; the press roll was his specialty. In 1917, Barbarin moved to Chicago, playing with local groups (including some that he led) and with Freddie Keppard and Jimmie Noone. From 1923-1924, he returned to New Orleans, where he performed with the Onward and Excelsior bands, before moving back to Chicago late in 1924 to join King Oliver (1925-1927). After more time back in New Orleans ...

New Waterford,Nova Scotia Today (Part 2) Music By Paul Brandt Small Towns And Big Dreams Geography New Waterford is located north of Sydney and northwest of Glace Bay. It is named after the city of Waterford, in Ireland. It is located near the ocean and is bordered on one side by cliffs. New Waterford has a rather flat terrain and has several fresh water lakes located nearby. Economy New Waterford is a fishing port and former coal-mining community that has been in economic decline in recent years. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize the area's economy including a slow but steady increase in jobs in the technology sector. Many residents had been reliant on the coal and steel industries, which are now closed. The last local mine closed in 2001. New Waterford's current main industry is the Catalogue Teleservices Company call center for Spiegel, Newport News, Carabella and AB Lambdin. Eight-thirty whistle At 8:30pm every day the local volunteer fire department sets off its air raid siren. This has a long history, and continues in tradition to this day. The original intent of the whistle was to let small children know that they were to be inside or on their parents property. Events and celebrations Coal Dust Days Coal Dust Days is a week long celebration of the community taking place approximately the third week of July. The Coal Dust Days parade, Plummer Avenue Day, the tavern tour, and fireworks display are some of the many events that take place during the week. In 2008 ...

885 Anzac Parade, Maroubra
From the front gate to the rear boundary of this home, nostalgia warms you. Every room in the original and well-kept 1925 English residence radiates charm and character, so lovingly cared for by its current owners. If the walls could talk they could recall tales of bygone eras to more current times. Of trams running past the front door and milk delivered in bottles, to personal motors cars and supermarkets in every suburb. One thing that hasn't changed is the grandeur of this home and its testament to quality. Spacious and inviting with high ornate ceilings that proudly show off original chandeliers, lead light windows, timber floors and pull cord light switches. Time almost stands still here, and quite rightly so. Features - The lounge welcomes with an open fireplace and warm patterned old world carpet - The same carpet flows through to the dining room, a delightful window seat is a feature here - Having 5 bedrooms there is plenty of room for a growing family, 3 of the bedrooms are incredibly spacious and feature more window seats that are just beckoning you to 'come sit' -The renovated timber kitchen is neat and tidy, with a walk in pantry and lovely views over the private back garden - Sit in the morning sun on your front porch or stretch out on the back deck and enjoy your peaceful and private surroundings. - Watch the kids play in a safe and secure yard from the kitchen while you prepare your evening meal - A double garage, carport and extra space for another car or ...
