Ancient language of Nepal [Kirat Wambule Rai Language by Jean Robert Opgenort]
Educational video about Kirat Wambule Rai language and culture of Nepal. Introduction: The Wambule language is one of the languages of the ancient Kirat people, which existed well before the arrival of Vedic civilization in South Asia. Wambule is one of the 32 Kiranti languages spoken by the Rai peoples of eastern Nepal. Wambule language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. Historical Background of Rai: The Rai belong to the Kirati group or the Kirat confederation that includes Limbu, Sunuwar, Yakkha, Dhimal and many Mongoloid ethnic groups of Nepal. Within Rai: The Rai people are divided into many different sub-groups also known as clan namely • Bantawa, • Chamling, • Sampang, • Dumi, • Jerung, • Kulung, • Khaling, • Lohorung, • Mewahang, • Rakhali, • Thulung, • Tamla, • Tilung, • Sunuwar, • Wahaling, • Wambule, • Yakkha, • Yamphu, • Jero (Jerung,) • Puma, • Syangbo and many other others. There are more than 32 recognized and distinct Rai dialects, which fall within the Tibeto-Burman family of languages. Their languages are Pronominalised Tibeto-Burman languages, indicating their antiquity. The oral language is rich and ancient, as is Kirati history, but the written script remains yet to be properly organized as nearly all traces of it were destroyed by the following rulers of Nepal, the Lichhavis and almost eradicated by the Shah dynasty. With that this video is of Wambule Rai. Wambule is spoken by more than 5,000 people living around the confluence of the Sunkosi and Dudhkosi rivers near Kui-Bhir Hill. The Wambule-speaking area comprises the southernmost part of Okhaldhunga district, the westernmost part of Khotang district, the northernmost part of Udaypur district, and the northeasternmost part of Sindhuli district. The book The Wambule Language, which Jean Robert Opgenort defended as a doctoral dissertation in 2002 is the result of more than five years of work on the Wambule language. A revised and enlarged version of the dissertation, entitled A Grammar of Wambule, was published in 2004 as Volume 5.2 in the Brill series Languages of the Greater Himalayan Region. Introduction: The Chamling language is one of the languages of the ancient Kirat people, which existed well before the arrival of Vedic civilization in South Asia. Chamling is one of the 32 Kiranti languages spoken by the Rai peoples of eastern Nepal. Chamling language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. The oral language is rich and ancient, as is Kirati history, but the written script remains yet to be properly organized as nearly all traces of it were destroyed by the following rulers of Nepal, the Lichhavis and almost eradicated by the Shah dynasty. With that this video is of Chamling Rai. The Chamling are an ethnic group, belonging to one among the many branches of the ancient Kirat or Kiratis. They have their own language, culture and tradition, religious rituals (existing in oral incantation and transferred from generation to generation), history (unwritten) and ancestral land of origin. The traditional place of Chamling is Khotang district, which is situated in the East Hill Region of the country. At present they are found in other districts as well like in Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Siraha, Saptari, Bhojpur, Sankhusabha, Teplenjung, Pachthar, Illam, Therathum, Dhankuta, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa. They are also found in Darjeeling, Aasham, West Bengal, Sikkim, Mijuram, Arunaanchal of India and Myanmar. The Kirat Chamling mother tongue speakers are estimated at about 60,000 as per the census of 2001 whereas the total population is estimated at about 300,000. The indigenous Chamling language has been originated from Majhuya and near Haleshi of Khotang district of Nepal and spoken in the community but not recognized as an official language. The indigenous lingual, cultural identity has been found under crises in these days. This is because, lack of the governments concern for developing indigenous languages. In addition Kirat Chamling has a dignified and honorable history in Nepalese history prior to so called unification and modernization of the Nepal but now they are marginalized and disadvantaged from the mainstream of national development. Their specific and diverse culture has almost been extinct and will completely be devastated if not protected immediately. Today, like many other Kirati languages, Chamling is an endangered language.- published: 04 Dec 2013

Pachali Bhairav - Great Kirat King of Pharping, Kathmandu Nepal |Ancestor worshiping|
Pachali Bhairav - Great Kirat King of Pharping, Kathmandu Nepal |Ancestor worshiping|
This video is a strong example of ancestor worshiping (in nepali kul deuta puja) practiced among Kirat people in Nepal in ancient time and the legacy of this great tradition which exist still today and has become one of the important religion of Nepal. Historical Background of Pachali Bhairav: According to the mythology, Pachali Bhairav is one of the great king of Kirat dynasty. He was the king of Pharping (Dakhinkali). The King of Kantipur GunakamDev established Pachali Bhairav at Pachali than. By the end of Kirat period beginning around 300 AD, the custom of worshipping Pachali Bhairav had rooted deeply among the Kiratis in Kathmandu valley. After Kirat dynasty came to end, this custom and rituals of praying to Pachali Bhairav were not forgotten as people continued to worship Pachali Bhairav for blessing. Coming back to 21st century modern era, this tradition of worshiping Pachali Bhairav are still carried out by some local newari people living in Kathmandu valley as strongly seen in this video. In his book "The Brick and the Bull" Tiwari gives conclusive proof that the Kiratas had advanced knowledge of brick construction. Terracota figurines of humped bulls and matrika sculptures suggest Saiva and mother goddess worship was prevalent among the local population. The discovery of 2nd century BC brick construction by the Italian excavation team near the Satyanarayan temple gives conclusive proof that the Kiratas had advanced knowledge of brick construction. Terracota figurines of humped bulls and matrika sculptures suggest Saiva and mother goddess worship was prevalent among the local population. The Kiratas worshipped Ajima (Yumi) or grandmother and Ajju or Bhairav or Hathvan(Theba) or grandfather and these traditions are existent in eastern Nepal. Some writers consider the imageless piths of Kanga Ajima, Luti Ajima and Maiti Ajima as remains of Kirata goddesses. Yumi was worshipped as mother goddess; Rais and Limbus also worship Yumis. Popular Newari belief links Indrachowk Akash Bhairav and Pachali Bhairav to Kirata king Yalambar Hang and his son Pabbi respectively. Places worshipped as Bhairav were memorials of kings: Akash Bhairav of Indrachowk commemorates King Yalambar while Pachali Bhairav is for the Kirata king of Pharping. Many early Kirata settlements probably emerged around mother goddesses and Bhairav temples. There probably were also Kirat defenses on hilltops such as Phulchoki, Nagarjun, Champa Devi, Nagarkot gap, Nuwakot etc. The Kirata towns on hilltops were referred to as pringgas eg. Pharping, Khopring (Bhaktapur) and dula suffix meant settlements on slopes: Kupondol (Newari term dol for dula).- published: 06 Jan 2014
