Bantayan Island May 2011 1450
http://www.excitingcebu.com/amazing-cebu/things-to-do-in-cebu-city/ In May of 2011 Jessie and I (Rusty Ferguson an American expat living in the Philippines) went to Bantayan Island in Cebu Philippines. Bantayan Island is a peaceful place. Serenity is the word that comes to mind. It is lacking of the many of the normal sounds ones usually hears in the Philippines. There are no motorized tricycles for example. Instead pedicabs are used. A bicycle with a side car is attached powered by mostly young men of the island. The opening scene is our ride to Tristan's Bantayan Island Beach Resort. Tristan's is not fancy but is very low cost. Rooms there will cost you from I think P400 to P1000. The P1000 room faces the Visayan Sea. The food there is wonderful and presented as if you were staying in a much more expensive resort. I often see people from those more expensive resorts eating at Tristan's. Nancy the owner will see to it that you are treated like royalty. At high tide, you'll walk down the steps and right into the Visayan Sea. Often the waters lap over the edge the resort's sea wall. Sometimes the steps are submerged in the sea completely. The beach is power while sand and one area is called Sugar Beach due to the fine grain of the sand. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between Sugar Beach and the other beaches I visited. There are some resorts that are located on more rocky areas and swimming is not the main attraction there. The most popular area for water recreation is the Santa Fe portion of the island. Though, I have stayed at Tickty Boo Beach Resort to the south and found it to be just fine. When I was there, there was a bit more seaweed in the water but that could have just been the time of year. There is some seaweed in the water in the Santa Fe region as well. There wasn't a lot of it and it didn't bother me. Not growing from the seafloor but floating past us in the water. Bantayan is normally not a party place. During most times there are not a lot of tourist there. When we head into the sea, we have a few Filipinos nearby. Often Jessie and I have the beach to ourselves.. During Holy Week, Bantayan Island is full of activity with many people. Prices will usually be double or more. Don't go to Bantayan during Holy Week and expect serenity because you'll not find it. If you are thinking of moving to or visiting the Philippines check out this link and download my eBook: http://www.excitingcebu.com/expat-training-manual/ If you have been to Bantayan Island, leave a comment and let us know what you thought of it.- published: 11 Jul 2013

Matt's Typhoon Yolanda Effort Vlog Part 2; Vestergaard Community Filters
Please donate at http://www.youcaring.com/mattphilippines Typhoon Yolanda Victims On Islands In The Visayan Sea Need Clean Drinking Water. I have 120 Vestergaard Community Filters to distribute. They are heavy and I need trucks and boats to move them. Children and babies are suffering compounding complications such as infections and dehydration. Many wells are contaminated with bacteria such as E-Coli and parasitic worms. Rebuilding homes in intense heat due to deforestation and defoliation now means easily accessible clean drinking water is paramount. In a week I managed evac from an island, first aid and BLS for 4 heat related fatalities. The 5th man is in this video. Get clean drinking water to people of the Islands of the Visayas region in the Philippines. Please help!- published: 15 Dec 2013

Matt's Typhoon Yolanda Vlog Chapter 1
Please donate if you can http://www.youcaring.com/nonprofits/get-water-directly-to-those-who-need-and-more/105935 I submitted my first report to the EUCPM today and have returned to the Shelterbox base in Cebu with information on possible viable relief deployment in the Visayan Sea. It's been a taxing week or so but it's been great to see old friends in the fishing villages and also to help Andrea and Trevor at Thresher Shark Divers Malapascua start the process of individual assessment of rebuilding the homes of their staff on the island. Andrea and Trevor have done an incredible job of getting their dive business functional again and are conscientious employees who are paying their staff salary through this time of disaster. I'm pleased to say also that their instructors are reporting no change in the thresher shark sightings and I believe had a great experience this morning. It's critical to understand the importance of this economy in secondary and tertiary economic relationships with livelihoods of people in the region. The islands are incredibly bare of shade as many of the palms are gone. This is compounding to the situation regarding the lack of water. Additionally to this. I have found that the wells on the island have various aggressive bacteria in them such as E-Coli. This situation will be exacerbated due to the increase in detritus from the fallout of the Typhoon. I will be assisting Gary Cases of the Department Of Tourism and the NGO Sharklink in his efforts to create a set of toilets and a multichamber septic tank alongside a reverse osmosis water purification system and an ingenious functional points based system of rebuilding homes on the island which is now operational. The units donated from Vestergaard are being shipped now to Cebu as I could not afford to pay air freight. They have the capacity of cleaning and producing 120 million litres of drinking water, thus eliminating the need to boil well water and burn wood and charcoal which could be used for other purposes. I will still need to arrange transport from the port for these units. I have arranged for a nurse who is a resident of the island to give briefings on the units where they will be deployed and instruct on their usage. Many thanks for all your efforts so far. I've posted a short video which I managed to cobble together last night. It's not Oscar material but serves the purpose for which it is intended. Many thanks, Matt.- published: 28 Nov 2013
