How Lobbying Became A $3.5 Billion Industry
Lobbying is a huge industry in the U.S. In 2019, around 12,000 registered professionals helped clients spend over $3.5 billion, which seems to pay off. According to one study, for every dollar spent on lobbying and campaign contributions, a corporation can receive up to $760 from the government. Still, lobbying is often criticized and public perception of the practice is low. Opponents say that the industry isn’t adequately regulated, and that the ability to influence policy is in the favor of those with unlimited financial resources. Supporters say that without their in-depth expertise, lawmakers wouldn’t be able to do their job effectively and efficiently. Watch the video above to understand how lobbying works, why it exists and how it became a powerful tool for businesses.

Lobbyists get paid to try to convince lawmakers to adopt or oppose policies on behalf of their clients. There are thousands of different groups that have lobbyists either working directly for them or hiring lobbyists from lobbying firms. 3.5 billion dollars were spent on political lobbying in 2019 alone.
What’s more is that political donations funded presidential add campaigns that topped 14 billion dollars.
These astronomical sums are not reserved for the big leagues of federal politics either, every year vast fortunes are spent influencing policy decisions from, the oval office and federal congress all the way down to local city councils.
But why is this allowed?
Political lobbying combined with huge campaign contributions from wealthy individuals and companies has started to seem tantamount to bribery, where the best interests of the voting public are seconded to who can write the biggest donation check fundamentally undermining democratic processes...

This Is How To Hire Your Own D.C. Lobbyist
A lot of Americans feel frustrated that Congress isn't responding to massive problems, like climate change, and they don't know what to do to get their representatives to do something. Some donate to campaigns. Some try big public protests. Some bring their kids to confront a senator about it. Billy DeLancey says he's got a more effective way: Hire a lobbyist.
DeLancey founded Lobbyists 4 Good after watching how Bernie Sanders' 2016 campaign was about to capture mass enthusiasm and raise tons of money through small donors. After a few tweaks to his idea, he settled on this system: People can submit a proposal for an issue. If it raises $5,000 in 100 days through crowdfunding, he'll hire a lobbyist for one month to take the issue to Capitol Hill.

Few things are more controversial than lobbying in the world of economics, politics and so on.
Some people believe lobbying is a perfectly reasonable alternative to corruption, because at least you have a (somewhat) transparent framework when it comes to various entities trying to promote whichever agendas they have in mind.
Other folks, however, believe "lobbying" is a word that needs to be eliminated from the dictionary and that everything about the practice is deeply unethical. Who is right? Or perhaps this is one of those situations where the truth is somewhere in the middle?
Let's find out.
In one minute, lobbying has been explained in a fairly thorough manner. You'll find out what the definition of "lobbying" is (the meaning of the term) and what the concept is all about, through (among other things) carefully-chosen examples.
At the end of the day, you could spend ten hours watching an exhaustive lobbying explanation but... frankly, one minute is more than enough for it to become crystal clear what it's all about and what you need to know about the lobby "phenomenon" :)

**What are lobbyists?
Lobbyists get paid to try to convince lawmakers to adopt or oppose policies on behalf of their clients. There are thousands of different groups that have lobbyists either working directly for them or hiring lobbyists from lobbying firms. And these groups can range from big corporations and trade associations to public interest nonprofits.
**Are lobbyists bad?
Lobbying itself is generally thought of as a fundamental right guaranteed by the first amendment in the constitution as the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. At its core, lobbying is just a way for citizens to engage with lawmakers on issues that are important to them. Most of the critiques around lobbying have to do with how money is involved. It’s really expensive to run a political campaign, and one way that lobbyists can get facetime to talk to politicians is to throw big fundraisers for them, and lobbyists themselves can actually donate to political campaigns. And most of the biggest spenders on lobbying represent business interests. This raises equity issues about what types of organizations can afford to hire lobbyists and ultimately whose voices influence policy.
**How does lobbying work?
A lot of lobbying is building relationships with politicians and finding out who has the interest and power to help with your cause. And money isn’t the only currency in lobbying, politicians also pay attention to how many people are calling their offices and care about an issue, how many people are sending emails or writing notes about an issue. Getting facetime with politicians and their trusted advisors is extremely important when it comes to lobbying,
**Do lobbyists for non-corporate causes ever win?*
Yes, even though corporate interests outspend public interest groups– lobbying can still work to bring about change that isn’t necessarily pro-business. For example, The Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit successfully lobbied for congress to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is a pot of money reserved for conservation efforts to offset environmental damages caused by the oil and gas industry.

Political lobbying combined with huge campaign contributions from wealthy individuals and companies has started to seem tantamount to bribery, where the best interests of the voting public are seconded to who can write the biggest donation check fundamentally undermining democratic processes…. Right?
Well it’s time to defend the indefensible by learning how money works to influence politics and why we should want it to stay like this.

A Senator has his staffers draft up a bill that would effectively put you out of business.
When the government threatens your business’s livelihood like this, you hire a lobbyist in DC to do the work for you. And you just turned into a “special interest group” that just hired their first lobbyist.
The main reason why people hire lobbyists is to get the government to stop doing something, or to get the government to do something that would benefit them. Whatever the reason is, this is why the business of legal bribes is so big.
In business, people sell goods and services, in DC, lobbyists sell ideas their clients want them to sell. If you do it right, politicians will never even realize they’re being legally bribed. The last thing you want to do is to scream and yell at these politicians about how “if you don’t support this bill...l!” But at the same time, the conversation is almost never just “give me $100,000 and I’ll vote this way”. No matter who you are, if someone does something for you without asking, you’re gonna be compelled to return the favor in order to maintain your self image as a fair, just person.
In January 2006, Jack Abramoff was sentenced to six years in federal prison for conspiracy to bribe public officials, tax evasion, etc. They were accused of secretly splitting multi-million dollar profits. Abramoff became the poster child for everything that was wrong with big money in politics. If he was the biggest and only villain in DC, when he finally went to prison - why didn’t corruption in DC end?
Everyone cringes at the thought of dirty “special interest” groups and “lobbyists” - but are they the only problem? Are they the only ones in Washington with “special” interests? After all, the only thing that gives these “evil” lobbyists any power is because of the simple fact that the politicians have power to be bought in the first place! The bigger the government gets, the more potential for corruption there will be. If you believe in that, you’re gonna have to accept that big money will always be a part of big politics.
Rockefeller is often remembered as the richest man in history, the king of the greedy capitalist pigs. Yet, since he got his first job as a broke 16 year old, one thing he always made time for, no matter how broke he was, was charitable giving. So before you go complaining about how big corporations rule the world and how unfair life is - the solution might just be right inside your wallet.

After a few tweaks to his idea, he settled on this system: People can submit a proposal for an issue. If it raises $5,000 in 100 days through crowdfunding, he'll hire a lobbyist for one month to take the issue to Capitol Hill.
