Richard Burton, CBE (10th November 1925 - 5th August 1984) (born Richard Walter Jenkins) was a Welsh stage and cinema actor noted for his mellifluous baritone voice and his great acting talent that many critics believed he squandered in an excess of hedonism. Establishing himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s and the purveyor of a memorable Hamlet in 1964, Burton was called "the natural successor to Olivier" by critic Kenneth Tynan. An alcoholic, Burton's failure to live up to those expectations fueled his legend as the greatest thespian wastrel since John Barrymore, another great Hamlet whose career also foundered in a sea of alcohol.

Plot
The other love-affair on the set of Hollywood's most expensive film of its day. Against the backdrop of the much publicised love affair of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, a young woman finds herself in the backstage world of the famous 1963 Ancient Egyptian blockbuster in a film studio near Rome. We follow her as she embarks on her own intense emotional romance over the final days of the shooting of the doomed epic. Burton and Taylor's romance remains a constant presence during her own romantic awakening in a world she knows nothing about. A Short Epic About Love is a love-letter to the films of the golden era of 1960s CineCitta Studios where Hollywood's view of Ancient Rome met the contemporary Rome of Fellini.

Plot
On the set of Cleopatra, Hollywood's most beautiful star, Elizabeth Taylor, fell into the arms of one of the world's greatest actors, Richard Burton - and she didn't leave. Their subsequent white-hot, scandalous love affair gave rise to the paparazzi and they became the most hunted and photographed couple on earth. Their rocky, passionate, relationship, born in front of the cameras, was subsequently captured in a series of films, including The V.I.P.s and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The last of the great, extravagant stars, flaunting diamonds, yachts and private planes, they continually seized the headlines. They even divorced and married again - only to divorce again - but remain in each other's hearts. Plot
The story of 'Elizabeth Taylor (I)' (qv)'s rise to stardom, beginning in Los Angeles 1942. Her dominating mother has decided that her daughter must become a star - no matter what others or Elizabeth herself think. Assisted by 'Hedda Hopper' (qv), she gets a part in _Lassie Come Home (1943)_ (qv). She becomes a child star, raised by her studio. Growing up, she has several love-affairs - and several divorces, since her husbands can't accept being married to a Hollywood icon.

Richard Burton, CBE (10th November 1925 - 5th August 1984) (born Richard Walter Jenkins) was a Welsh stage and cinema actor noted for his mellifluous baritone voice and his great acting talent that many critics believed he squandered in an excess of hedonism. Establishing himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s and the purveyor of a memorable Hamlet in 1964, Burton was called "the natural successor to Olivier" by critic Kenneth Tynan. An alcoholic, Burton's failure to live up to those expectations fueled his legend as the greatest thespian wastrel since John Barrymore, another great Hamlet whose career also foundered in a sea of alcohol.

I did not know Richard Burton until I found his grave not far from home, in the swiss countryside white and silent with winter. In a tiny forgotten cemetery rests a Welshman, once the most flamboyant actor one could meet in Hollywood. He named an enormous diamond after himself and Elizabeth Taylor whom he married twice. While today we still know Liz as an eccentric granny fallen out of her golden boozed years, I realized when talking with peers of my generation that the name of Burton only rings a vaguely familiar bell.
I sought to explore the life of Richard Burton in the mirror of his death as he flirted with Her, and show the internal side of the star for whom he really was, a profound, underestimated actor whose voice rose like “the deep, dark answer from the valley to everybody”, a melancholic soul who loved liquor as much as he loved poetry.
It is a collage of archival footage where images take on a life of their own in a new structure of evocation.

“Shape and details” is the direction of Olivier’s Rousteing’s Fall/Winter Balmain
Collection.
When visiting New York for the first time in December, the 26-year-old designer
was mesmerized by the Faberge egg in blue and gold that Richard Burton gave
Elizabeth Taylor on display at Christie’s. The beauty and simplicity of the Faberge egg’s
form and ornamentation inspired Rousteing to revisit the codes of Balmain and to define
shape and refine details in new ways with this collection.
He started with a sharp, strong new take on the Balmain jacket. “I viewed the
jacket as a square canvas, and crafted it so it retained its architectural lines but was
transformed through technique into a three-dimensional ornamented object, a beautiful
frame for a women’s face.” This statement in silhouette – razor sharp tailoring with an
oversized ease -- is completed with a more fluid Balmain pant, or a more tailored
cropped boyish pant when paired with a perfecto jacket and vest.
As the Balmain atelier delved deeper into Faberge’s heritage, Russian
ornamentation and cossack tailoring infused the collection. The ornate design of
orthodox ecclesiastical vestments, precious porcelain and rich palace interiors are
combined in sumptuous displays of complex, layered pattern.
“I was also amazed by the abundance of pearls in Elizabeth Taylor's collection.
She was a goddess with highly dramatic style.” says Rousteing.
High collar, hourglass velvet dresses are a base for a constellation of large pearl
and diamond embroidery also inspired by the architecture of Russian churches, and the
Balmain sweatshirt is covered with icy Fabergé pattern and cross stitch tapestry
cameos. A soft pyjama suit is adorned in Balmain form.
Velvet also stars in this collection in new embossed patterning, or devoré, for
sharp tailoring, body dressing and in combinations with polished, pastel leather for
tooled jackets and pants. Soft kid leather, grain de poudre wools, ponyskin and satin mix
freely and work on their own, or with embellishment, in a play of rich darks and icy
pastels in petrol blue, billiard green and black blush pink, peach, sky blue, mint and
white.

Richard Burton, CBE (10 November 1925 – 5 August 1984) was a Welsh actor. He was nominated seven times for an Academy Award, six of which were for Best Actor in a Leading Role (without ever winning), and was a recipient of BAFTA, Golden Globe and Tony Awards for Best Actor. Although never trained as an actor, Burton was, at one time, the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. He remains closely associated in the public consciousness with his second wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor; the couple's turbulent relationship was rarely out of the news.
Richard Burton was born Richard Walter Jenkins in the village of Pontrhydyfen, Neath Port Talbot, Wales. He grew up in a working class, Welsh-speaking household, the twelfth of thirteen children. His father, Richard Walter Jenkins, was a short, robust coal miner, a "twelve-pints-a-day man" who sometimes went off on drinking and gambling sprees for weeks. Burton later claimed, by family telling, that "He looked very much like me...That is, he was pockmarked, devious, and smiled a great deal when he was in trouble. He was, also, a man of extraordinary eloquence, tremendous passion, great violence."
