Robinson Crusoe flees Britain on a ship after killing his friend over the love of Mary. A fierce ocean storm wrecks his ship and leaves him stranded by himself on an uncharted island. Left to fend for himself, Crusoe seeks out a tentative survival on the island, until he meets Friday, a tribesman whom he saves from being sacrificed. Initially, Crusoe is thrilled to finally have a friend, but he has to defend himself against the tribe who uses the island to sacrifice tribesman to their gods. During time their relationship changes from master-slave to a mutual respected friendship despite their difference in culture and religion.

Daniel Defoe (/ˌdænjəl dɨˈfoʊ/; ca. 1659--1661 to 24 April 1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain and along with others such as Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism. Robinson Crusoe (/ˌrɒbɪnsən ˈkruːsoʊ/) is a novel by Daniel Defoe that was first published in 1719. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is a fictional autobiography of the title character—a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. The story was perhaps influenced by Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on the Pacific island called "Más a Tierra" (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island), Chile. The details of Crusoe's island were probably based on the Caribbean island of Tobago, since that island lies a short distance north of the Venezuelan coast near the mouth of the Orinoco river, in sight of Trinidad. It is also likely that Defoe was inspired by the Latin or English translations of Ibn Tufail's Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, an earlier novel also set on a desert island. Another source for Defoe's novel may have been Robert Knox's account of his abduction by the King of Ceylon in 1659 in "An Historical Account of the Island Ceylon," Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons (Publishers to the University), 1911. Although inspired by a real life event, it was the first notable work of literature where the story was independent of mythology, history, legends, or previous literature. Although commonly referred to as simply Robinson Crusoe, the book's complete, original title as it appears on the title page of the first edition is The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un‐inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pirates. Eine geraume Weile hindurch blieb nämlich mein Herr, wie ich hörte aus Geldmangel, gegen seine Gewohnheit zu Hause liegen. Während dieser Zeit fuhr er jede Woche ein oder mehre Mal in seinem kleinen Schiffsboot auf die Rhede zum Fischen, wobei er stets mich und einen kleinen Moresken zum Rudern mitnahm. Wir machten ihm auf diesen Fahrten allerlei Späße vor, und da ich mich zum Fischfang anstellig zeigte, erlaubte er, daß ich nebst einem seiner Verwandten und dem Mohrenjungen auch bisweilen allein hinausfuhr und ihm ein Gericht Fische holte. Als wir einst an einem sehr windstillen Morgen solch eine Fahrt machten, entstand ein so dicker Nebel, daß wir die Küste, von der wir kaum eine Stunde entfernt waren, aus dem Gesicht verloren. Wir ruderten unablässig, ohne zu wissen, ob wir vorwärts oder zurück kämen, den ganzen Tag und die folgende Nacht hindurch und wurden erst am nächsten Morgen gewahr, daß wir, statt uns dem Lande zu nähern, nach der offenen See hin gerathen und mindestens zwei deutsche Meilen vom Ufer entfernt waren. Dennoch erreichten wir dieses, völlig ausgehungert, unter nicht geringer Mühe und Gefahr wieder, nachdem sich des Morgens ein scharfer Wind landwärts erhoben hatte. Unser Gebieter, durch dies Ereigniß gewarnt, beschloß, künftig für seine Person größere Vorsicht anzuwenden und nicht mehr ohne Kompaß und Proviant auf den Fischfang zu gehen. Da er das Langboot unseres von ihm genommenen Schiffes zu seiner Verfügung hatte, trug er seinem Schiffszimmermann, der wie ich Sklave und geborener Engländer war, auf, in diesem Boot eine kleine Kajüte zu errichten, ähnlich der in einer Barke, und zwar so, daß hinter derselben Jemand Platz habe, um zu steuern und das große Segel zu regieren, davor aber zwei Personen Raum fänden, um die andern Segel zu handhaben. Das Langboot führte ein sogenanntes Gieksegel und die Raa ragte über die Kajüte hinaus, welche schmal und niedrig war und höchstens für den Kapitän und ein Paar Sklaven, sowie einen Tisch und ein Schränkchen zur Aufbewahrung von Brod, Reis, Kaffee und dergleichen Raum bot. In diesem Fahrzeug fuhren wir dann fleißig zum Fischen aus, und da ich mich gut auf das Geschäft verstand, ließ mein Herr mich nie zu Hause. Eines Tages wollte dieser mit ein paar vornehmen Mohren zum Vergnügen oder zum Fischfang eine Fahrt machen und ließ dazu ungewöhnliche Anstalten treffen. Schon Abends zuvor hatte er Mundvorrath an Bord geschickt und mir aufgetragen, drei Flinten mit dem im Boot befindlichen Pulver und Blei bereit zu halten, damit er und seine Freunde sich auch durch die Vogeljagd vergnügen könnten. Ich that wie mir befohlen, und wartete in dem sauber geputzten Boot, darauf Flagge und Wimpel lustig weheten, auf die Ankunft meines Gebieters und seiner Gäste. Bald nachher aber kam jener allein, sagte mir, die letzteren seien durch Geschäfte verhindert, ich solle daher mit dem Mohren und dem kleinen Jungen wie gewöhnlich allein hinausfahren und für seine Freunde zum Abendessen ein Gericht Fische fangen. In diesem Augenblick kamen mir meine Fluchtgedanken wieder in den Sinn. Ich sah jetzt ein kleines Schiff ganz zu meiner Verfügung gestellt und bereitete, als mein Herr fort war, sogleich Alles statt für den Fischfang zu einer langen Fahrt vor. Freilich wußte ich nicht, wohin diese gehen sollte, aber das kümmerte mich nicht, da ich nur von dort wegzukommen bedacht war.....

Ich war jetzt so weit entfernt davon, die Gelegenheit zu einem Ueberfall der unglücklichen Menschen herbeizuwünschen, daß ich während jenes ganzen Zeitraums nicht ein einziges Mal den Hügel erstieg. Ich wollte sie gar nicht ins Gesicht bekommen und überhaupt nicht wissen, ob sie auf der Insel seien, damit sich meine Pläne gegen sie nicht erneuerten und ich nicht durch irgend einen sich darbietenden Vortheil zu einem Angriff gegen sie herausgefordert würde. Das Einzige, was ich that, war, daß ich das Boot von der anderen Inselseite entfernte und nach dem östlichen Theil brachte. Dort barg ich es in einer kleinen Bucht unter hohen Felsen, wohin, wie ich wußte, die Wilden wegen der Strömung mit ihren Canoes nicht kommen konnten. In meinem Boot führte ich alles dazu Gehörige mit fort, Mast und Segel und das ankerartige Ding, das ich mir, so gut es hatte gehen wollen, angefertigt hatte. Ich nahm dies Alles mit, um nicht das geringste Zeichen des Bewohntseins der Insel zurückzulassen. Außerdem hielt ich mich, wie erwähnt, eingezogener als je und verließ meine Behausung selten, außer um meine Ziegen zu melken und meine kleine Heerde in den Wald zu treiben. Hier war ich, da er auf der entgegengesetzten Seite der Landungsstelle der Wilden lag, keiner Gefahr ausgesetzt. Soviel nämlich schien gewiß, daß diese bei ihren Besuchen der Insel nicht die Absicht hegten, auf derselben Etwas zu suchen, und daß sie daher sich nicht weit von der Küste zu entfernen pflegten. Sie waren, wie ich nicht bezweifelte, seitdem mich die Furcht behutsamer gemacht, wiederholt auf der Insel gewesen. Mit Entsetzen bedachte ich, in welcher Lage ich mich befunden haben würde, wäre ich bei einer solchen Gelegenheit auf die Cannibalen gestoßen und von ihnen zu einer Zeit entdeckt worden, in der ich einzig mit einer meist nur mit leichtem Schrot geladenen Flinte bewaffnet überall nach Beute herumzustreifen pflegte. Wie groß wäre mein Schrecken gewesen, wenn ich statt jener Fußspur plötzlich einen ganzen Haufen von Wilden gesehen hätte und von ihnen verfolgt worden wäre, wobei ihre Schnelligkeit mir ein Entrinnen gewiß unmöglich gemacht haben würde. Der Gedanke hieran ließ mir zuweilen das Herz erbeben und entmuthigte mich so, daß ich nur mit Mühe wieder Fassung gewann. Ich sagte mir, daß ich, wäre jener Fall eingetreten, völlig widerstandsunfähig und sicherlich nicht im Stande gewesen sein würde, das zu thun, was ich jetzt nach so langer Erwägung und Vorbereitung zu thun vermochte. Das ernstliche Nachdenken über die Sache machte mich geradezu und zuweilen für geraume Zeit melancholisch. Endlich aber lösten sich auch diese Erwägungen stets in Dank gegen die Vorsehung auf, die mich vor so vielen ungeahnten Gefahren errettet und mich vor einem Unheil bewahrt hatte, das ich selbst von mir abzuwenden schon deshalb nicht im Stande gewesen war, weil ich das Uebel weder geahnt, noch für möglich gehalten hatte.

Uebrigens war meine erste Ernte nur mäßig, und das Schneiden derselben machte mir daher keine große Mühe. Ich vollzog es auf meine besondere Weise, indem ich nur die Aehren abschnitt und sie in einem großen Korb, den ich mir geflochten, heimbrachte. Dann entkörnte ich sie mit den Händen und gewann dabei nach meinem Ueberschlag (denn ich mußte nach dem bloßen Auge schätzen, da ich kein Maß hatte) nur etwa zwei Scheffel Reis und über zwei und einen halben Scheffel Gerste. Trotzdem diente diese Ernte mir zu großer Ermuthigung, da ich hoffte, mir nun mit Gottes Hülfe in Zukunft auch Brod verschaffen zu können. Dabei zeigten sich aber neue Schwierigkeiten. Ich wußte nämlich weder, wie ich das Korn zerquetschen und Mehl daraus bereiten, noch wie ich dieses von der Kleie reinigen solle, und ebensowenig wie ich dann aus dem Mehl Brodteig gewinnen und diesen backen könne. Diese Zweifel vereint mit dem Wunsche, einen reichlichen Vorrath zu besitzen, um für meinen künftigen Unterhalt Sorge zu tragen, veranlagten mich, die jetzige Ernte noch nicht anzugreifen, sondern sie abermals ganz zur Aussaat aufzubewahren. Inzwischen nahm ich mir vor, all mein Nachdenken und meine ganze Thätigkeit auf das große Werk der Brodbereitung zu verwenden. Jetzt konnte ich mit Wahrheit sagen, daß ich für mein tägliches Brod arbeite. Es ist fast wundersam, und wenige Menschen haben wohl je darüber nachgedacht, wie viel Dinge nothwendig sind, um nur den einen Artikel Brod bis zur Vollendung zu bringen. Mir aber, der ich im nackten Zustand der Natur lebte, kam dies, seit ich die erste Handvoll Korn gewonnen, in entmutigender Weise zu täglich klarerem Bewußtsein. Zunächst hatte ich weder einen Pflug, die Erde zu ackern, noch einen Spaten, sie umzugraben. Diesem Mangel half ich jedoch, wie erzählt, ab, indem ich mir einen hölzernen Spaten machte. Allein mit diesem ging die Arbeit eben auch nur in hölzerner Manier von Statten, und wiewohl seine Anfertigung mich manchen Tag gekostet hatte, nutzte er sich, weil er keinen eisernen Beschlag hatte, rasch ab, und ich brachte die Arbeit mit ihm auch nur ungenügend zu Stande. Indeß schickte ich mich auch hierein mit Geduld. Sodann, als das Korn gesäet war, fehlte es mir an einer Egge. Ich half mir, indem ich, über das Land gehend, einen großen und schweren Baumzweig darüber schleifte und die Erde also mehr kratzte als eggte. Dann brauchte ich, sobald das Korn hervorgewachsen war, gleichfalls, wie schon erwähnt ist, eine Menge von Dingen, um es einzuzäunen, zu schneiden, zu trocknen, einzubringen, zu dreschen, von der Spreu zu trennen und es dann aufzubewahren Ferner hätte ich auch eine Mühle nöthig gehabt, es zu mahlen, Siebe, um das Mehl zu reinigen, Hefe und Salz, um Brod daraus zu machen, und einen Ofen, um es zu backen. Trotzdem ich alle diese Dinge entbehrte, war mir das Korn doch von unschätzbarem Vortheil. Die Mühsamkeit und Langwierigkeit der Arbeit hatte, abgesehen davon, daß sie eben nicht zu äudern war, insofern für mich keine Bedeutung, als ich ja mit meiner Zeit nicht so sparsam zu sein brauchte. Ich hatte einen Theil des Tages für jene Arbeiten ein und für allemal bestimmt, und da ich Willens war, vorläufig Nichts von dem Korn für Brod zu verwenden, so konnte ich während der nächsten sechs Monate meine ganze Thätigkeit und Erfindungsgabe zur Beschaffung von Gerätschaften benutzen, welche für die spätere Verwerthung meines Getreides nöthig waren.
