As part of the Democracy Day event celebrating the 750 anniversary of Montfort parliament, and 800 years of signing the Magna Carta, BBC's center piece talk show HARDtalk interviews Wu'er Kaixi.

Inspired by Ko Wen-je's successful independent campaign for Taipei Mayor, Wu'er Kaixi will run in the national legislative by-election for Taichung 6, for the seat Lin Chia-lung vacated just before election as mayor of Taichung. He doesn't have appear to have the organization necessary to win such a large constituency (over 200k voters), but he's sure to generate plenty of positive press, and I wish him well!

On November 25, 2013, Tiananmen student leader Wu'er Kaixi turned himself over to Hong Kong authorities with the ultimate goal of being deported to China, where the democracy activist faces prison. If I ever manage to get on China soil, by whatever means, realistically speaking they are going to arrest me. Realistically speaking they will probably deport me. They will probably keep me in prison, in detention for several months and then sentence me, at the same time throw me out. There is a good chance, a fair chance like larger than 30% that I will actually see myself carry through the sentence. The sentence should be somewhere between four years, which is what Wang Dan got, who is number one on the most wanted list, I am number two. After he got arrested, I suppose I promoted myself into number one. And then 11 years, which is what Liu Xiaobo got. 11 years is also the sentence Wang Dan got for the second time. He did not see it through. 11 years is also I believe Wei Jinsheng got. Some superstition for the number 11. There is a good chance I am getting that. I hope I do not see it through. I don't say I hope I don't suffer that long, well that too, but I hope it does not take that long for China to change, so I can emerge, walk out of the prison. All possibilities. There is a bigger chance they may again throw me out. But when you make the decision to do that, you should be ready for all consequences.
Nobody is actually that prepared. To be ready to give up the life, including supporting wife, two sons -- nobody can bet hat ready. I can tell you this:
Every dissident in the world has this dilemma. Every dissident in the world has an untold story. That is every brave move they make, at the same time they are making a decision to hurt their family. So in the world history of dissident movements, no matter how many decisions, behind those actions made at the same time by the same group of people to hurt their family. And there is no way to justify that. If we are suposed to be human rights fighters, why are we violating our own family's rights to be with us? If we are fighting for freedom, what right do we have to deprive it from our own family members? Nevertheless, make those decisions, as pain as it may be.
I would like to see myself going back to China running for an election. I do not know for what level. I would like to see myself running for election, just like you see people running for election here in Taiwan. It's fascinating, isn't it? Taiwan has the most fascinating elections in the world, I am sure you guys know it better than I do now. I would like to see my parents. I would like to see no exile. Exile is a torture, is a mental torture. My friend told me that Beijing has changed so much. I was born and raised in Beijing. So my friend told me that Beijing has changed so much. All the things we loved about Beijing are gone. I would not like it anymore, I would hate it. I answered her, yeah, but I would like to be in Beijing to hate it.
If I go back to China, I will just be another headache fort hem. Can they deal with it? Yes. Can they take the consequences of sentencing me for 11 years? Yes. Can they take the consequences for the same time of impact, like sentencing me, having a fan zuo yong, resisting impact for them, a little. Can they take 100 Wuer Kaixi being sentenced, being arrested, coming back, being on trial, repeat 100 times, can they? I do not know. I do not think they are confident to answer yes, we do.

Wu'er Kaixi was one of the leaders of the student revolt in Tiananmen Square in 1989. After the revolt he had to leave China. Today he lives in Taiwan, from where he continues to promote democratic reforms in his country.

Drawing strong criticism from Taiwanese opposition and human rights groups, the KMT government has repeatedly denied a visa to prominent Uyghur leader Rebiya Kadeer, reportedly banning her from entering Taiwan for three years. (http://www.uyghurcongress.org/en/?p=3329)
Wu'erkaixi, a Tiananmen student leader in 1989 and currently living in exile in Taiwan, strongly criticized this move in a press conference in Taipei on 29 July 2010. Like Rebiya, he is from Xinjiang, where his parents still live today. Originally, Wu'erkaixi has been known to lean towards the KMT on questions of cross-strait politics.

Wu'erkaixi (Uyghur: ئۆركەش دۆلەت; Chinese: 吾尔开希; born 17 February 1968) was a Uyghur student leader in the Tiananmen protests of 1989. He was born in Beijing, with the origin of Yili, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Uyghur ethnicity. He achieved prominence while studying at Beijing Normal University as a hunger striker who rebuked Chinese Premier Li Peng on national television. He now resides in Taiwan as a political commentator.
Wu'erkaixi arrived on scene in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in late April 1989, after he founded an independent student’s association at Beijing Normal University. He quickly emerged as one of the most outspoken student leaders as the size of crowds increased. According to Eddie Cheng, at a hastily convened meeting to form the Beijing Students Autonomous Federation and elect its leader, Zhou Yongjun of the University of Political Science and Law narrowly defeated Wu'erkaixi to be its first president.
Upon meeting Premier Li Peng for the first time in May 1989, in an encounter recorded on national television, Wu'erkaixi interrupted Li during his introduction, saying “I understand it is quite rude of me to interrupt you, Premier, but there are people sitting out there in the square, being hungry, as we sit here and exchange pleasantries. We are only here to discuss concrete matters, sir.” After being interrupted by Li, who said that he was being somewhat impolite, Wu'erkaixi continued. “Sir, you said you are here late [because of traffic congestion]... we’ve actually been calling you to talk to us since 22 April. It’s not that you are late, it’s that you’re here too late. But that’s fine. It’s good that you are able to come here at all...”

Drawing strong criticism from Taiwanese opposition and human rights groups, the KMT government has repeatedly denied a visa to prominent Uyghur leader Rebiya Kadeer, reportedly banning her from entering Taiwan for three years. If I ever manage to get on China soil, by whatever means, realistically speaking they are going to arrest me. Realistically speaking they will probably deport me. They will probably keep me in prison, in detention for several months and then sentence me, at the same time throw me out. There is a good chance, a fair chance like larger than 30% that I will actually see myself carry through the sentence. The sentence should be somewhere between four years, which is what Wang Dan got, who is number one on the most wanted list, I am number two. After he got arrested, I suppose I promoted myself into number one. And then 11 years, which is what Liu Xiaobo got. 11 years is also the sentence Wang Dan got for the second time. He did not see it through. 11 years is also I believe Wei Jinsheng got. Some superstition for the number 11. There is a good chance I am getting that. I hope I do not see it through. I don't say I hope I don't suffer that long, well that too, but I hope it does not take that long for China to change, so I can emerge, walk out of the prison. All possibilities. There is a bigger chance they may again throw me out. But when you make the decision to do that, you should be ready for all consequences.
Nobody is actually that prepared. To be ready to give up the life, including supporting wife, two sons -- nobody can bet hat ready. I can tell you this:
Every dissident in the world has this dilemma. Every dissident in the world has an untold story. That is every brave move they make, at the same time they are making a decision to hurt their family. So in the world history of dissident movements, no matter how many decisions, behind those actions made at the same time by the same group of people to hurt their family. And there is no way to justify that. If we are suposed to be human rights fighters, why are we violating our own family's rights to be with us? If we are fighting for freedom, what right do we have to deprive it from our own family members? Nevertheless, make those decisions, as pain as it may be.
I would like to see myself going back to China running for an election. I do not know for what level. I would like to see myself running for election, just like you see people running for election here in Taiwan. It's fascinating, isn't it? Taiwan has the most fascinating elections in the world, I am sure you guys know it better than I do now. I would like to see my parents. I would like to see no exile. Exile is a torture, is a mental torture. My friend told me that Beijing has changed so much. I was born and raised in Beijing. So my friend told me that Beijing has changed so much. All the things we loved about Beijing are gone. I would not like it anymore, I would hate it. I answered her, yeah, but I would like to be in Beijing to hate it.
If I go back to China, I will just be another headache fort hem. Can they deal with it? Yes. Can they take the consequences of sentencing me for 11 years? Yes. Can they take the consequences for the same time of impact, like sentencing me, having a fan zuo yong, resisting impact for them, a little. Can they take 100 Wuer Kaixi being sentenced, being arrested, coming back, being on trial, repeat 100 times, can they? I do not know. I do not think they are confident to answer yes, we do.

On the eve of Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting with President Barack Obama on Sept. 25, the OPC hosted a conversation with Wu’er Kaixi, a student leader in the Beijing protests of 1989.
He was forced into exile and has never been able to return to mainland China. Wu'er Kaixi remains active in politics and is a candidate in Taiwan's 2016 parliamentary elections.
An ethnic Uighur, Wu’er Kaixi sees himself as one of the many victims of a systematic war the Chinese government has long been carrying out against its own people that is intensifying under Xi Jinping.
Wu'er Kaixi believes the US is sending the wrong message to the world – and in particular to the Chinese government – by welcoming Xi Jinping to its shores and lending legitimacy to large-scale oppression.
