KSBR is a non-commercial radio station in Mission Viejo, California, broadcasting to the Orange County, California, area on 88.5 FM. KSBR airs a jazz music and smooth jazz format branded as "Jazz-FM" along with news programming.

KSBR signed on in 1975 as a Class D, 10-watt student-run station and a limited coverage area of only a few miles from the campus of Saddleback Community College. In 1979, with grants from CPB and NTIA, the signal was upgraded to a Class A, covering most of Orange County and the station signed on as Orange County's first National Public Radio affiliate with a mix of professional and student broadcasters. The program schedule at first employed an eclectic, free-form mix of rock music, drama and locally produced talk shows but, with a growing news and public affairs emphasis and a switch to an all jazz and smooth jazz format, the station gained critical recognition and a growing audience.

Budget cuts in 1984 returned KSBR to a student-run operation, most of the professional staff was laid off and the NPR membership was discontinued but the strong emphasis on jazz and public affairs continued.

(There is incidentally one other 'KSBR' in the world - a marketing consultancy based in Hertford, just north of London in the UK.)

The call letters were previously used by an FM station in San Bruno, California, which operated at 100.5 megahertz, from 1947 to 1959.^[1] The station was owned and operated by Eitel-McCullough, which moved to San Carlos, California in 1959 and merged with Varian Associates in 1965.

Michael Lington (born June 11, 1969) is a contemporary jazz saxophonist and recording artist.

Lington plays a distinctive contemporary saxophone leaning strongly towards the pop side of jazz. He reaches a younger demographic than traditional jazz listeners and is emerging as a contemporary face of jazz.

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Lington relocated to Los Angeles at age 21.^[1] He is the grandson of jazz pioneer and Danish composer Otto Lington.^[2]

Lington has achieved significant U.S. and international success, releasing seven albums and 12 U.S. radio hits. He has endorsement deals with Vandoren and Yamaha.

It was announced in March 2010 that Lington would perform with pop star Michael Bolton as a special guest on his upcoming world tour. Lington performed his #1 radio hit "You and I" during the show and also was featured on several of Bolton's hits, including "Soul Provider" and "Georgia On My Mind"^[3]

Lington's most recent album Pure was released february 14, 2012 by Trippin N' Rhythm distributed by Red/Sony to strong reviews. His previous CD "Heat" reached #4 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Sales Chart. It entered the Billboard Heat Seeker chart at #39 and was named Jazztrax Album of the Year in 2008. Lington's duet with Aaron Neville, "That's When You Save Me", tied as Jazztrax Best Vocal Song of the Year.^[4]

You & I, the first single from Heat, went to #2 on the national R&R chart and #1 in Los Angeles and other large markets. It was among ITunes most popular smooth jazz songs for 2008.^[5] He was nominated for International Instrumentalist of the Year 2009.^[6]

He headlined the Playboy Jazz Festival community event in Los Angeles June 1, 2008 and won over the crowd with his high energy show and serenade of audience members.^[7]

Lington performed the national anthem and "God Bless America" at the Los Angeles Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium on August 22, 2009 to a standing ovation. He was invited back on October 7, 2009 to perform the national anthem and God Bless America for the Dodgers opening game of the playoffs.

Lington performed at the Royal Wedding of Denmark's future King Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary Donaldson at Fredensborg Castle and numerous other times for the Danish royal family.^[8]

International Musician Magazine featured Lington on the cover of the November 2008 issue.^[9] IMM is the official publication of the American Federation of Musicians and circulated to registered musicians within the U.S. and internationally. The accompanying article spoke of his pride in becoming an American citizen and extensive charitable work.

Lington performed Baker Street from his Heat album on Jerry Lewis' Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon on Labor Day 2008, assisting to raise a record $65 million for the MDA. After the performance, Lewis praised Lington's rendition of Baker Street, featuring Grammy nominated vocalist and American Idol alumni Ace Young, saying: "Hey Michael! Beautiful, Michael! Beautiful music, great talent ... we're lucky we got them tonight."

Lington is founder of Michael Lington Cigars, popular with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger,^[10] and is a columnist for Wine and Jazz magazine.^[11] He is a voting member of the Recording Academy, and is working toward a helicopter license.

Frederick Samuel "Freddie" Fox (born Highworth, near Swindon, 22 November 1898, died High Wycombe, 15 May 1968) was an English football goalkeeper.

He played for several clubs, including Gillingham (where he played over 100 Football League matches) and Brentford during the 1920s and 1930s,^[1] and also gained one cap for England.^[3]

As a youngster he was on the books of Swindon Town before joining Abertillery. During the First World War he guested for Swindon Town in wartime matches. In the 1921-22 season he joined Preston North End and played three matches in the First Division, before joining Gillingham in 1922 where he played three seasons in the Third Division (South), making over 100 appearances.

In 1925 he was selected^[2] to represent England against France, representing a rare case of a player being selected for England from the Third Division. There was some dispute as to which club Fox was playing for at the time of his appearance for England, with reference sources varying between Millwall and Gillingham. Fox was reputed to have signed papers for Millwall while on the boat travelling to the game, making him a Gillingham player when selected to play, but a Millwall player when taking the field. However, upon further research, his transfer to Millwall was logged by the Football League on 29 April 1925, nearly a month before the game took place.^{[citation needed]} In the match itself, played on 21 May 1925, he had to leave the field in the 75th minute following a head injury sustained in a charge by goalscorer Jules Dewaquez, and was prevented from completing his sole appearance for England. Following an earlier withdrawal by goalscorer Vivian Gibbins, England finished with nine men, but managed to hang on to win the game 3-2.^[4]

He remained with Millwall for two seasons, before joining Halifax Town for the 1927-28 season. He then signed for Brentford where he played in the Third Division South for the next three seasons, before playing out his career with Truro City.

Boney James, (born James Oppenheim, September 1, 1961 in Lowell, Massachusetts) is a saxophonist, songwriter and producer who popularized urban jazz (an updated version of contemporary jazz that contains elements of R&B and hip-hop). He is one of the most successful instrumental artists of our time, with sales totaling over 3 million records.

Boney James is a three-time Grammy Award nominee (Best Pop Instrumental Album, 2001 and 2004, and Best Traditional R&B Performance, 2009 ) and a Soul Train Award winner (Best Jazz Album). He has also been honored with an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Jazz Album. He has accumulated four RIAA Certified Gold Records. His most recent CD, Contact (Verve Forecast, 2011), spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart.

To date, nine of James's albums have reached #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and two have reached the top 10 on the R&B Albums Chart, a rare feat for an instrumental artist.

James is also renowned for his compelling live performances. According to the Boston Globe: "Let's make something perfectly clear: James is not a smooth jazz player. Yeah, he is often grouped with people like Kenny G and Najee, but his music is muscular and gritty, whereas most smooth jazz has all the texture and complexity of a cue ball.... James swaggered across the stage like a blacktop hero draining treys on an overmatched opponent. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he took up the clarinet at the age of eight and switched to sax when he was 10.^[1] Boney spent his early teen years in New Rochelle, New York and became a Motown fan, which contributed to his "musical influence and soulful R&B style."^{[citation needed]} He was also influenced by saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr.. When James was 14 his family moved to Los Angeles, where he joined a fusion band which had some success opening for acts like Flora Purim and the Yellowjackets. Another member of this early band was John Shanks, now a successful pop producer.^[2] (Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow)

James received a history degree from UCLA, but began playing music full-time after graduation. He took up the keyboards and in 1985 joined The Time/Purple Rain alum Morris Day's band for four years. His R&B influence was further strengthened by seven years of touring and sessions as a sideman with Day, the Isley Brothers, Bobby Caldwell, Randy Crawford, Teena Marie and many others. It was on the road with Crawford in 1986 that he earned his now-famous moniker; his per diem as a touring musician barely kept him fed, and a bandmate (current Tonight Show keyboardist, Wayne Linsey) commented of his dwindling physique, "We'll have to start calling you Boney James!" The name stuck.

In the early 1990s, after joining Bobby Caldwell's band, James caught the attention of the engineer/mixer & producer Paul Brown. In 1992 he released his debut album as a leader, Trust, on the indy Spindletop Records label. The record's success led to James being signed by the Warner Brothers label in 1994. The RIAA Certified Gold Records, Seduction, Sweet Thing and Body Language followed.

In 2000 he collaborated with trumpeter Rick Braun on an album called Shake it Up. Their duets include "Grazin' in the Grass". Other artists who have made guest appearances on Boney's records include Faith Evans, George Benson, Dwele, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, Anthony Hamilton, Jaheim, Eric Benét, Dave Hollister and Angie Stone.

James assumed the role of producer starting with his Pure CD in 2003. Following a string of chart-topping albums, in 2006 James moved to Concord Records^[2] and with the release of Shine achieved his career highest Billboard Pop Chart position (#44 on the Top 200).

In 2008, James recorded a song with American Idol finalist Syesha Mercado, entitled "Gonna Get It," which was co-written by James and Rahsaan Patterson. It is currently available exclusively in the iTunes Music Store.^[3]

For his 2009 album, Send One Your Love, James decided to take a different path with a concept album, a collection of ten seductive love songs. ("The ultimate make-out cd.")^{[citation needed]} In addition to the subsequent Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance, in 2009 Billboard named James the #3 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade. (Trailing just Kenny G and Norah Jones.)

On May 15, 2010, James was involved in a car crash coming home from a performance when he was rear ended by a drunk driver. James suffered a fractured jaw, two shattered teeth and facial lacerations. He was sidelined for 2 months. ^[4]

Contact released in March 2011 became his 9th CD to top the Billboard Jazz Chart. It features high-profile guest vocalists LeToya Luckett (of Destiny's Child), Grammy and Tony winner Heather Headley and R&B superstars Mario and Donell Jones. The record was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 2011 Soul Train Awards.

Boney James is married to actress/director Lily Mariye ("Nurse Jarvik" on NBC's ER for 15 seasons).
