Eric Sevareid Farewell Nov 30, 1977
CBS Commentator Eric Sevareid bade farewell to his audience when he retired Nov 30, 1977. This video was rescued from a 3/4" Beta aircheck of the CBS Newsfeed I recorded everyday at 3:30 PST when I produced the 11pm newscast for KOIN-TV in Portland. Sevareid was one of my heroes because he was one of the last class acts of the Murrow era to retire. I recently rescued this video that had been sitting in my attic for all these years, and I thought it appropriate to post it here for a new generation to discover. Enjoy.

The Road to World War II - Program Two - Return to Isolationism
Woodrow Wilson and the Senate fight for control of American foreign policy, and the Senate wins. Wilson is opposed by a powerful coalition of conservatives like Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge, and brings his case to the people as he embarks on a grueling 8000 mile train trip. Wilson refuses to compromise on the League of Nations and, ironically, is responsible for its defeat. This classic documentary series, The Road to WWII, follows the events that inevitably sparked World War II, capturing the drama, the excitement and the juxtapositions of these crucial years between the end of World War I and Pearl Harbor. Former CBS News correspondent and commentator, Eric Sevareid, one of the world's most respected figures in journalism, presents this extraordinary series which features stunning original newsreels, soundtracks, and rare archival footage. It was the era of Lucky Lindy, bootleg, Babe Ruth, Valentino and assembly-line Fords. It was also the time of market collapse, Klan meetings, demagogues abroad, red scares at home and bread lines. The best of times, the worst of times, and the times in which the United States reluctantly moved center stage. The Road to WWII is an innovative 16-part series that examines this crucial time as it progressed from the Armistice in 1918 to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. You will see the people who made history, hear their voices, and revisit the sites of events where consequence occurred. From the election of Roosevelt, to the rise of Hitler ...

The Man Behind the Myth: Walt's Passing
Marking the 45th anniversary of the death of Walt Disney. December 15, 1966. On the afternoon of December 14, Lilly (Walt Disney's wife) visited him and she telephoned Diane (their eldest daughter) later to say, "Oh, he's so much better. He got out of bed. He kept putting his arms around me, and his grip was so strong. I know he's going to get well. I know he's going to be all right." Roy (Walt's eldest brother) visited him that evening, and Walt seemed weak but lucid. The two brothers talked quietly about company matters, and Walt was intent on discussing Disney World and EPCOT. He stared at the ceiling which was covered with foot-square acoustical tiles, and he raised a faltering hand to point out the design of the Florida property. Roy, too, was encouraged by Walt's appearance, and he remarked to Edna that night that he thought Walt had a good chance to recover. Walt Disney died at nine-thirty the next morning (December 15, 1966) of an acute circulatory collapse, according to the death certificate. Sorrow and disbelief encircled the world. -- Excerpted from "Walt Disney: An American Original" by Bob Thomas Eric Sevareid on the CBS Evening News seemed to express the feelings of most Americans: It would take more time than anybody has around the daily news shops to think of the right thing to say about Walt Disney. He was an original; not just an American original, but an original, period. He was a happy accident; one of the happiest this century has experienced; and ...

"Headhunters" and Diplomat John Paton Davies
This Inside the Vaults video short examines one of US diplomat John Paton Davies' papers, showing primitive, childlike sketches whose meanings were unclear. It was later discovered that he drew them to try to communicate with indigenous Burmese tribal members known as the Naga, believed to be headhunters. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum recently acquired Davies' papers from his family. Davies, who died in 1999, was one of the State Department's "China hands" assigned to China in World War II. The drawings on the featured document appear to date from August 2, 1943, when Davies, CBS News correspondent Eric Sevareid, and 19 other men boarded a C-46 transport plane in India. Their route took them over the Burma "hump" to the Chinese city of Chungking, where they were to meet US wartime allies. As they crossed the mountains, one of the plane's engines failed and all 21 men parachuted out. Twenty survived. They were met on the ground by the Naga, and the rest is history. Inside the Vaults includes highlights from the National Archives in the Washington, DC, area and from the Presidential libraries and regional archives nationwide. These shorts present behind-the-scenes exclusives and offer surprising stories about the National Archives treasures. See more from Inside the Vaults at bit.ly

The Road to World War II - Program Eleven - The Italian-Ethiopian War
The short-lived but brutal Italian-Ethiopian War leads to an examination of Italian Fascism and Mussolini. Mussolini ruled with apparent effectiveness and was hailed by leaders of the anti-Communist world until his dreams of empire led him to invade Ethiopia. The incident was one of the chief episodes that paved the way for World War II.
