My Choice - John Philip Sousa: Washington Post March
"The Washington Post" is a patriotic march composed by John Philip Sousa in 1889. Since then, it has remained as one of his most popular marches throughout the United States and many countries abroad. We're showing scenery photos of the US and a few soldiers. In 1889 owners of The Washington Post newspaper requested that John Philip Sousa, the leader of the United States Marine Corps Band, compose a march for the newspaper's essay contest awards ceremony. Sousa obliged; "The Washington Post March" was introduced at the ceremony on June 15, 1889, and it became quite popular.[1] It led to a British journalist dubbing Sousa "The March King." Sousa is honored in The Washington Post building for his contribution to the newspaper and his country. Music is copyrighted by its corresponding owners. How The Washington Post's New Owner Aided the CIA, Blocked WikiLeaks & Decimated Book Industry 2/2
http://www.democracynow.org - The Washington Post announced on Monday the paper had been sold to Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos for $250 million. Bezos, one of the world's wealthiest men, now controls one of the most powerful newspapers in the country. Some critics of the sale have cited Bezos' close ties to the U.S. government. In 2010, Amazon pulled the plug on hosting the WikiLeaks website under heavy political pressure. Earlier this year, Amazon inked a $600 million cloud computing deal with the CIA. Independent booksellers and publishers have also long complained about Amazon's business practices. Watch Part 1 of this discussion: http://youtu.be/Mh3e5KcYeaQ Democracy Now! hosts a roundtable on the history of Amazon and the future of the newspaper industry. "Monopoly newspapers, especially The Washington Post in the nation's capital, while it might not be a commercially viable undertaking, it still has tremendous political power," says Robert McChesney, co-founder of Free Press, "a plaything for these billionaires that they can then use aggressively to promote their own politics." Media critic Jeff Cohen notes that while The Washington Post notably published reports on Watergate and the Pentagon Papers decades ago, he thinks concerns that Bezos will ruin their journalistic tradition is unfounded, saying that in recent years, "The Washington Post has really been the newspaper of the bipartisan consensus." We also speak to Dennis Johnson, publisher of Melville Books. "Amazon is a company that feels no pain. They've, as far as I can tell, never made money. ... So, when you see him taking over The Washington Post and you wonder is he going to be able to monetize it, is he going to make it profitable, he probably doesn't care," Johnson says. Tableau Vivant of The Delirium Constructions - Skylight One Hanson, 2011
Two years in the making, on May 23rd and 24th of 2011, Sarah Small and collaborators mounted a 120-participant Tableau at the former Williamsburg Savings Bank, now known as Skylight One Hanson. Chosen as one of Time Out New York's Top Critic's Picks, and listed in the New York Times, Flavorpill and more, this performance had the attention of many, long before the cast took the stage. Maintaining it's roots in her still photography series, The Delirium Constructions, and already the most ambitious project of her career, in 2011, for the first time, Small explored, within the Tableau Vivant, a specific social phenomenon: the ritual of marriage. With its airs of pageantry and religious rectitude, wedding ceremonies celebrate the most intimate joining of two individuals in the most public sphere, providing rich fodder for examination within the project’s framework. On the evenings of May 23rd and 24th, Small acted as the legal officiant for three couples (two weddings and a vow renewal ceremony), as she simultaneously directed the attendant Tableau Vivant cast in their own explorations of the theme, mingling performance art with reality in a compelling cocktail.
Small and collaborators received a stellar review from The New York Times and were featured on both the front and back covers of the Sunday Art section of the The Washington Post. Among many others, the event had press in attendance from both local and international media, including Italy's Virgin TV.

A Journey into the "Emerald Triangle"
1 Oct 2009 - Three counties in northern California make up the bulk of marijuana growing in the U.S. In the years since voters in California passed proposition 215 in 1996, pot production has exploded. Traditionally, Mexican cartels were the dominate supplier of marijuana to American consumers. Now the Mexicans are fighting to hold on to their share of the market. The Making of Flagpole Sitta, the Original Office Lip Dub
About a year ago, we made this video ( http://vimeo.com/flagpolesitta ) just after moving into our new office. This fun after-work video project unexpectedly went on to get 1.5 million views, was written about in the Washington Post ( http://tinyurl.com/4m325s ), the BBC ( http://tinyurl.com/3b7yy8 ), and elsewhere, and inspired many other offices to make their own lip dubs (which you can see at www.officelipdub.com ).
Amanda and I happened to take footage of Jakob as he blocked out scenes and prepared everyone for the shoot, which we did in one long shot on the first take. For those who enjoyed the finished video, hopefully this footage will show some insight into Jakob’s creative process, as well as how much fun it was to make this.
