The following events occurred in November 1981:
1981 (MCMLXXXI) was a common year starting on Thursday (dominical letter D) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1981st year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 981st year of the 2nd millennium, the 81st year of the 20th century, and the 2nd year of the 1980s decade.
Often shortened to t'ai chi, taiji or tai chi in English usage, t'ai chi ch'uan or tàijíquán is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. Though originally conceived as a martial art, it is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: competitive wrestling in the format of pushing hands (tui shou), demonstration competitions, and achieving greater longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims with differing emphasis. Some training forms of t'ai chi ch'uan are especially known for being practiced with relatively slow movements.
Today, t'ai chi ch'uan has spread worldwide. Most modern styles of t'ai chi ch'uan trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu (Hao), and Sun. All of the former, in turn, trace their historical origins to Chen Village.
The term "t'ai chi ch'uan" translates as "supreme ultimate fist", "grand supreme fist", "boundless fist", "supreme ultimate boxing" or "great extremes boxing". The chi in this instance is the Wade–Giles transliteration of the Pinyin jí, and is distinct from qì (ch'i, "life energy"). The concept of the taiji ("supreme ultimate"), in contrast with wuji ("without ultimate"), appears in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophy, where it represents the fusion or mother of yin and yang into a single ultimate, represented by the taijitu symbol . T'ai chi ch'uan theory and practice evolved in agreement with many Chinese philosophical principles, including those of Taoism and Confucianism.
Wilhelm Walter Friedrich Kempff (25 November 1895 – 23 May 1991) was a German pianist and composer. Although his repertoire included Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms, Kempff was particularly well known for his interpretations of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. He recorded the complete collection of their piano sonatas. He is considered to have been one of the chief exponents of the Germanic tradition during the 20th century and one of the greatest pianists of all time.
Kempff was born in Jüterbog, Brandenburg, in 1895. He grew up in nearby Potsdam where his father was a royal music director and organist at St. Nicolai Church. His grandfather was also an organist and his brother Georg became director of church music at the University of Erlangen. Kempff studied music at first at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik at the age of nine after receiving lessons from his father at a younger age. Whilst there he studied composition with Robert Kahn and piano with Karl Heinrich Barth (with whom Arthur Rubinstein also studied). In 1914 Kempff moved on to study at the Viktoria gymnasium in Potsdam before returning to Berlin to finish his training.
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft, OBE (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey, radio presenter, record producer and journalist. He was the longest serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. He was known for his eclectic taste in music and his honest and warm broadcasting style.
He was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio, and he is widely acknowledged for promoting artists working in various genres, including pop, reggae, indie pop, indie rock, alternative rock, punk, hardcore punk, breakcore, grindcore, death metal, British hip hop, electronic music, jungle and dance music. Fellow DJ Paul Gambaccini described him as "the most important man in music for about a dozen years".
Peel's Radio 1 shows were notable for the regular "Peel sessions", which usually consisted of four songs recorded by an artist live in the BBC's studios, and which often provided the first major national coverage to bands that would later achieve great fame. Another popular feature of his shows was the annual Festive Fifty countdown of his listeners' favourite records of the year.

Jenny Agutter was promoting An American Werewolf in London when she spoke with David Childs, at Imperial College London. This video has remained un-edited since it was recorded 35 years ago. Only in 2015 have I discovered this and attempted an edit. The cutaway shot questions were limited and not matching the actual interview as well as I would have liked, but it was all shot in a hurry at the time. Unfortunately, we never did managed to get access to film clips, so this really is a basic interview only. The fact of no clips may be the reason why it was never edited, I really cant remember now?

November 1981: the A Centre was established as an alternative cultural space in Belfast city centre and ran on Saturday afternoons. Organised by the Belfast Anarchist Collective the centre soon became a magnet for young people and punks in particular. On loan from Belfast's gay community, the Carpenter Club in Long Lane was transformed into a den of delight and subversion by exhibitions of numerous agitprop posters of the day. This was an experiment in mixed media: banned or controversial films, new wave music and punk bands, performance poets and artists, alternative books and comics, and a wholefood cafe being the weekly staple diet. The ever watchful RUC were continually perplexed at such a mixed gathering. This film is a record of just one of those Saturdays. Music featured from many o...

“The world needs to know about the plight of the Baha'is of Iran” are the stirring words spoken by Iraj Kamalabadi at the opening of this powerful short film. His sister, Fariba Kamalabadi, is serving a 20-year prison sentence. ‘Faith and Sacrifice’ weaves together accounts of nine family members of Baha'is who have faced imprisonment, torture and execution under Iran’s present government and features commentary by Mr. Glenford Mitchell, retired member of the world governing council of the Baha'i Faith who was deeply involved, at the highest levels, in the early days of the defense of the Iranian Baha'is. Referring to the systematic attempt by the Islamic Republic of Iran to destroy the Iranian Baha’i community, Kimia Kline, whose grandfather, Fat’u’llah Ferdowsi, was executed in 1982 te...
DIE BLEIRNE ZEIT (The German Sisters) dir. Margarethe von Trotta, 1981 106 minutes. Germany. COMING IN NOVEMBER - DATES TBD Die Bleierne Zeit gets its title from a poem by Hölderlin and conjures the oppressive atmosphere of postwar Germany, with the bleak and aimless consumer society being built through the "economic miracle" and the heritage of fascism that the majority of Germans were reluctant to address. Its Italian title, Anni di piombo, became the phrase used to describe the wave of revolutionary violence and ensuing repression in Italy in the 70s. The overcast skies and modern prison blocks, along with the black and white newsreels of extermination camps and third-world misery that radicalize the Ensslin sisters, make for an overall cinematic texture that is just as leaden as the...
