Slanted Magazine #21 – Cuban Poster Art / The New Generation
CALL FOR SUPPORT:
SLANTED MAGAZINE AND EXPOSITION
Show the world’s extraordinary Cuban poster designers and artists, published and exposed by Slanted, an independent magazine about typography, photography, graphic design and illustration.
First of all, thank you for taking the time to review our project, we appreciate very much that you’re spending some time with CUBAN POSTER ART – The New Generation.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
We discovered the amazing power of Cuban poster art. First, Natalie Seisser, a graphic designer from Paris, came up to see us this year in April to show striking work from her Cuban designer friends. Lars Harmsen (editor of Slanted) went to Cuba this summer and met some of Natalie’s friends – as well as other artists and photographers. All of them are creating beautiful work, more analogue than digital, with a very human and warm touch. How could we create wider awareness for their amazing work and give those artists an international voice? As editor of Slanted magazine, together with Markus Lange and Falko Gerlinghoff (Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art and Design), we thought it would be great to publish this special issue: CUBAN POSTER ART – The New Generation.
Beyond cigars, American old timer cars and Che Guevara T-shirts Cuba has a strong tradition of graphic design. From the fifties until the embargo the county has been a major center for new ideas and creative design experiments. Nowadays the contrast is striking as there is in Cuba barely any publicity billboards, packaging, flyers, stickers, brands … They have all been replaced over the years by government propaganda posters but against all odds the spirit of creativity remains still much alive. Since the nineties a new generation of graphic designers has emerged and they hold on tight to the course of history. They are unfortunately still unknown and they strive to survive in a complicated economic and political situation without any means to be recognized by the rest of the world.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
During over fifty years of revolutionary power, the history and evolution of Cuba are connected to images and pictures. The society is based on culture and puts forward its creativity and diversity. Cuban poster production has reached its summit between the years 1965 and 1975. Artists and Graphic Designers have created their own efficient graphic language in order to educate and convey revolutionary ideals. The history of Cuban Graphic Design has seen then the birth of its masters.
From the eighties, Cuba has suffered many economic difficulties due to the deterioration of exchanges with the USSR. The poster is as a consequence no more a government priority and material means become scarce in the workshops and orders are rare. A majority of Graphic Designers decide to leave the country and part of the island culture disappear with them.
In 1984, the government opens the first Graphic Design School in the country, the ISDI (Superior Institute of Industrial Design) with the target to train professionals in the Design and Communication sector. Five years later, the first Graphic Designers graduate, start to work and boost the poster production. Little by little the organisms work again with this new generation and the history of Cuban Graphic Design is revived.
GOAL: PUBLICATION AND EXPOSITION
This special issue of Slanted, CUBAN POSTER ART – The New Generation, will be released in spring 2013, attracting attention to an international level. This project has the goal to raise € 10,000 (≈ $ 13,000) additionally to our usual budget.
We want to cover expenses we usually don’t have:
1. For an exhibitions with original silkscreened posters, touring from city to city. Shipping, organization and insurances for first shows in Berlin, Leipzig and Paris will cost € 4,000 (≈ $ 5,167)
2. Translations: The magazine will be bilingual (Spanish/English). With a volume of 320 pages we will have to translate all interviews and texts either to English or Spanish. This needs to be done professionally and will be € 4,500 (≈ $ 5,813)
3. Additional print of 1,000 copies that will be shipped to Cuba. Whoever has been in Cuba knows how hungry Cubans are for good printed matter. Extra printing: € 1,500 (≈ $ 1.938)
This project funded will enable us to share what we see as being an extraordinary inside view into Cuban design, reflecting the reality of life in Cuba and the beauty that lies within its complexity.

Steve Hanks was born on November 24, 1949 on San Diego.
Lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Steve Hanks is recognized as one of the best watercolor artists working today.
The detail, color and realism of Steve Hanks’ paintings are unheard of in this difficult medium. A softly worn patterned quilt, the play of light on the thin veil of surf on sand, or the delicate expression of a child — Steve Hanks captures these patterns of life better than anyone.
Steve Hanks was born into a military family in San Diego in 1949. His father was a highly decorated WWII Navy flyer. Hanks grew up playing tennis and surfing along the beaches of Southern California. “The ocean made a strong and lasting impression on me. It was good for the soul to be out in the water — surfing, swimming, or simply getting in touch with its mysterious power.”
The family was transferred to New Mexico when Steve was a junior. After high school he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, earning excellent marks in commercial art and figure drawing. He transferred to the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Steve Hanks took a job as a caretaker at a Campfire Girl’s camp near Cuba, New Mexico in 1976. The pay was minimal, but the rent was free, and all during the winter months his time was his own. For the next four and a half years Hanks experimented with many media: oils, watercolor, pencil, acrylics. “If I hadn’t spent so much time perfecting my drawing skills,” he comments, “I would not be the painter I am today.” His first romantic piece, “Daisies and Lace”, was a harbinger of his developing style — it featured a lacy dress and a serene sunlit setting.
Hanks calls his style ‘emotional realism’. He often leaves the faces of his figures obscured or turned away, not only to leave the face to the imagination of the viewer but also to allow the entire figure to express the emotion. Backlighting is also a signature element of his style. “Sunlight has become one of my favorite subjects. I’m fascinated by how it filters through things, how it floods a whole room with color. Often my paintings are really more about sunlight than anything else.” His marriage to Laura and the arrival of three children provided new inspiration for the artist. Many lovingly rendered domestic scenes were added to the portfolio during those years.
Jurors, galleries and collectors have long recognized the stature of Steve Hanks’ achievements. He received the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art Gold Medal, in addition to consistently appearing in the list of top ten American artists compiled by U.S. Art Magazine. Art for the Parks has honored his work with many awards since 1989.
