Segmentation of Cluttered Scenes through Interactive Perception
This paper describes a novel object segmentation approach for autonomous service robots acting in human living environments. The proposed system allows a robot to effectively segment textured objects in cluttered scenes by leveraging its manipulation capabilities. In this interactive perception approach, 2D-features are tracked while the robot actively induces motions into a scene using its arm. The robot autonomously infers appropriate arm movements which can effectively separate objects. The resulting tracked feature trajectories are assigned to their corresponding object by using a novel clustering algorithm, which samples rigid motion hy- potheses for the a priori unknown number of scene objects. We evaluated the approach on challenging scenes which included occluded objects, as well as objects of varying shapes and sizes.

Diminished Reality or Altering the Visual Perception of Rigid Patches of a Real World Scene
Diminished reality, unlike augmented reality, means we subtract objects from our vision. In this video we show how this is done by removing planar surfaces (like advertisements) from our vision through an EyeTap device.

Scene Understanding through Autonomous Interactive Perception
We propose a framework for detecting, extracting and modeling objects in natural scenes from multi-modal data. Our framework is iterative, exploiting different hypotheses in a complementary manner. We employ the framework in realistic scenarios, based on visual appearance and depth information. Using a robotic manipulator that interacts with the scene, object hypotheses generated using appearance information are confirmed through pushing. The framework is iterative, each generated hypothesis is feeding into the subsequent one, continuously refining the predictions about the scene. We show results that demonstrate the synergic effect of applying multiple hypotheses for real-world scene understanding. The method is efficient and performs in real-time.

TEDxUIUC - Daniel Simons - Counter-Intuition
Daniel Simons is the head of Visual Cognition Lab at the University of Illinois. His recent research explores the cognitive underpinnings of our experience of a stable and continuous visual world. For example, his studies reveal the surprising extent of inattentional blindness — the failure to notice unusual and salient events when attention is otherwise engaged and when the events are unexpected. More broadly, he tries to identify those aspects of our environment that automatically capture attention and those that go unnoticed. Other active research interests include scene perception, object recognition, visual memory, visual fading, attention, driving and distraction. His laboratory adopts methods ranging from real-world and video-based approaches to computer-based psychophysical techniques. This talk was recorded at TEDxUIUC 2010 (4/10/10), which was organized at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by a group of students led by Cristian Mitreanu. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized ...

Accurate eye center localisation for low-cost eye tracking
We demonstrate a novel approach for accurate localisation of the eye centres (pupil) in real time. In contrast to other approaches, we neither employ any kind of machine learning nor a model scheme - we just compute dot products! Our method computes very accurate estimations and can therefore be used in real world applications such as eye (gaze) tracking. For further information have a look at www.inb.uni-luebeck.de

What in the world do we hear?
Inaugural lecture by Brian Roberts, Professor of Auditory Perception at Aston University ~*~*~*~ Hearing is the process by which we perceive objects and events in the world from the sounds that they produce. However, it is fairly uncommon in everyday life for us to hear a single source of sound in the absence of other sounds. For example, when we listen to the speech of a particular person during a conversation, their speech is often accompanied by the speech of other people and a host of background sounds. Indeed, these other sounds may temporarily mask the particular sound source to which we are paying attention. Therefore, our auditory system is often faced with the challenge of grouping together those sound elements that come from one source, separating them from those arising from other sources, and reconstructing missing information about the source we are trying to attend. Without a solution to this "auditory scene analysis" problem, our perceptions of speech, music, and other sounds would not correspond to the events that produced them. Indeed, listeners with hearing impairment often find dealing with noisy environments especially difficult, such as when trying to follow a conversation in a crowded room. This lecture will consider what we know about the nature of the scene analysis problem, and what perceptual research can tell us about how our auditory system is generally able to overcome the challenges arising from everyday listening conditions.

Spider-Man 2 - "Horror Hospital" Scene
PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE COMMENTING!!! This is a particular scene in Spider-Man 2 that borderlines into the category of horror. Personally, I believe that this movie is heavily underrated. For the short period of one year from whence it came out, it was considered the best superhero movie ever made, until Batman Begins came out and tied the spot for many, or succeeded it, depending on perception (Marvel vs DC). Then The Dark Knight and Watchmen came out, and this movie was completely buried under the three of them. People now associate the Spider-Man film series with something awful because Spider-Man 3 fell so short of expectations and apparently disappointed a lot of people. While I do enjoy the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan Batman movies as well as Watchmen (and the comic books these movies are based on), I still think Spider-Man 2 still deserves a spot of extreme recognition. In my opinion, the top three superhero movies ever made are (3) Spider-Man 2, (2) Watchmen, and (1) The Dark Knight. If you have completel forgotten about this movie, or never seen it before, do yourself a favor and pick up Spider-Man 2.1. Only 8 minutes longer but it's extremely worth it. Spider-Man 2 is owned by Marvel, Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures

Movie Perception Test - Conversation
A movie perception test by Daniel Levin & Daniel Simons. Check out the book, The Invisible Gorilla, for more information (www.theinvisiblegorilla.com). The video itself was used in research by Levin and Simons that was published in 1997 in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. The video is copyrighted and is provided here for individual viewing purposes only. If you would like to use it in teaching, talks, or presentations, it is available on DVDs from Viscog Productions (www.viscog.com). SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT: The video is a well-known demonstration of the phenomenon of change blindness: people fail to notice large changes to scenes when those changes occur during a brief disruption like a film cut. In the original study, people who were not expecting changes noticed none of the changes in this movie. On a second viewing, when they were looking for changes, they noticed fewer than 2 of the 9 changes on average. The changes are obvious once you know to look for them, but they do not grab attention automatically. You can learn more from the original journal article that is available from my reprint archive (www.psych.uiuc.edu or from my book with Christopher Chabris, The Invisible Gorilla (www.theinvisiblegorilla.com).
