Inside Leo Laporte's former TWiT Cottage, Petaluma 2010
UPDATED EXPLANATION: This video is almost ancient history even though its only 18 months old. That's because Leo and the team have moved the centre of production down the road to a purpose built studio complex. The TWIT cottage was rented and so by August 2011 will be empty. I think this is going to be a useful video to look back on in the coming years to see how the "This Week in Tech" empire has grown from humble beginnings. New studio tour is here: http://inside.twit.tv/blog/2011/6/21/new-studio-tour.html
I dropped by Leo's production centre in the heart of Petaluma, Northern California at the start of February 2010. The town is about a half hour's drive North of the Golden Gate Bridge, at the foot of Sonoma County, the famous wine belt of Northern California. It has been used a backdrop for "American Graffiti" and "Peggy Sue Got Married."
Leo has been a pioneer in creating tech podcasts, developing a business out his popular radio show on KFI, and the remnants of Tech TV. Interested to hear his views on the future of radio, i.e. why HD-Radio might not make it. Also thanks to Dane Golden and Colleen Kelly who were kind enough to share insights on the back office behind the This Week in Tech network. They have both gone on to do other great things in the tech industry.
Follow the live streams at http://www.twit.tv. Little known fact: we share a friend in the voice-over business. The first words on each TWiTcast are voiced by Jim Cutler, a long time friend of the Media Network shows I used to produce and present for Radio Netherlands.
I originally made this video to show to broadcast colleagues in Ghana and Benin, which is why Leo refers to West Africa.

Mad Dogs and Cameramen: The Story of Colonial Film (taster reel v.2)
The British Colonial Film Unit was founded in 1939 to produce propaganda films that would maintain support for wartime Britain in the colonies. People were dispatched across the Empire to make these films. Some were colonial administrators; some were film directors.
The most successful colonial film units were in West Africa, in Ghana and Nigeria, where competing ideologies produced very different films. In Nigeria, unit head William Sellers advocated using simple film techniques that could be understood by "primitive" viewers. In Ghana, film director Sean Graham believed that all films should be good films, no matter the audience. Graham went on to produce the first feature length drama with an all-African cast. It was a popular and critical success, and was nominated for a BAFTA.
But in the aftermath of WWII the notion of empire was being questioned; the filmmakers in West Africa found themselves swept along by a tide of change as Africa agitated for independence. In the space of a decade these filmmakers went from producing films that upheld the empire to making films reflecting an increasingly self-sufficient, independent Africa.
This is the story of colonial filmmakers in Africa. They went to Africa to tell the story of Empire but ended up telling the story of African independence. Along the way they produced a treasure trove of remarkable films and in doing so laid the groundwork for the biggest film industries in Africa today. This is their story.

Have We Met?
Have We Met? is a 15 minute split screen video that presents four aspects of daily life in a remote village in Mali that is the natal village of Janet Goldner's close friend & collaborator, artist Kandioura Coulibaly. Have We Met? bridges Malian realities & Western audiences with images that are small, personal and human.
Karenguimbe is close to the site of Kumbi Saleh, the ancient capital of the Wagadu. The Wagadu, first Empire in West Africa - also known as the Ghana Empire - was rich from cattle & gold. It flourished from the 8th to the 11th century.
Kandioura & Janet want to introduce you to the people of the village. The people of Karenguimbe want you to know about them & their way of life:
Women & men drawing water from the Well, the sole source of water for both people & animals & the reason Karenguimbe came to be located in this spot,
the Griot, the musician playing his ngoni, historian, genealogist of the village, which has existed in this location for many centuries,
the fields of Millet, the heads of grain just harvested, food for the village, which is pounded by the women & prepared for eating. The harvest was meager due to lack of rain after months of hard labor,
Men & women with children sitting to remember a relative who had died 40 days earlier. The Memorial was the reason for our visit in 2004.
