Top 20 Astronomy Tips
This video shows our top astronomy tips to help you get the best from your telescope and enhance your enjoyment of the night sky. You can explore any of the tips in more detail in a back catalogue of videos on our channel. If you liked this video why not subscribe to Astronomy & Nature TV? Warning: Making telescope accessories out of cardboard could seriously damage other peoples wealth (Do they mean me? RJD) A short notice on the topic of numerical inexactitudes. Before some of you start thrashing your keyboards to shrapnel - yes, we know there are over 30 tips not just the 20 of the title! But we thought 20 sounded so much friendlier than 34! 20 is such a flouncy-bouncy sort of number, so much more rounded, less angular and awkward than 34. And we were worried you might not be able to stomach the idea of 34 astronomy tips in one sitting! But this means we gave you 70% more than you were expecting to get in the 18 minute video! Wow, this means you got two astronomy tips per minute -- that's got to be some sort of YouTube record! Astronomy Cast 331 - Arthur C. Clarke's Ideas
In our previous episode, we introduced Arthur C. Clarke, the amazing man and science fiction writer. Today we'll be discussing his legacy and ideas on space exploration. You'll be amazed to hear how many of the ideas we take for granted were invented or just accurately predicted by Arthur C. Clarke. Visit the Astronomy Cast Page to subscribe to the audio podcast! Astronomy Cast 327: Telescope Making, Part 1
Why pick up a low quality, wobbly telescope from the department store when you can craft your own - just like Galileo, and all the great astronomers from history. For a minor investment, you can build a worthy telescope out of spare parts and high quality kits. Visit the Astronomy Cast Page to subscribe to the audio podcast! MOON - COULD PLANET EARTH SURVIVE WITHOUT IT? THIS VIDEO WILL SHOW YOU WHY NOT! (documentary)
The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth and the fifth largest moon in the Solar System. The Moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, always showing the same face with its near side marked by dark volcanic maria that fill between the bright ancient crustal highlands and the prominent impact craters. It is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun, although its surface is actually dark, with a reflectance just slightly higher than that of worn asphalt. Its prominence in the sky and its regular cycle of phases have, since ancient times, made the Moon an important cultural influence on language, calendars, art and mythology. The Moon's gravitational influence produces the ocean tides and the minute lengthening of the day. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D
I've recently discovered an animation that was rendered using the measured redshift of all 10,000 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. I've written a short script that leads you through a quick history of both deep field images and this video ends with a fly-through of the Ultra Deep Field. Every galaxy in the image is in its proper distance as viewed from the telescope line of sight. As if this image wasn't amazing enough.

Red Aurora Australis
After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions.
The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13.
Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise.
