When Ambrose Dared Walrus-1915-Mack Swain, Chester Conklin-One of the best Keystone comedies
When Ambrose Dared Walrus, 1915, directed by Walter Wright, starring Mack Swain and Chester Conklin and produced by Mack Sennett is one of the best Keystone comedies. Mack Swain (February 16, 1876 - August 25, 1935) was an American actor and vaudevillian, prolific throughout the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s. Born Moroni Swain to Robert Henry Swain and Mary Ingeborg Jensen in Salt Lake City, Utah, he worked in vaudeville before starting in silent film at Keystone Studios under Mack Sennett. While with Keystone, he was teamed up with Chester Conklin to make a series of comedy films. With Swain as "Ambrose" and Conklin as the grand mustachioed "Walrus", they performed these roles in several films including "The Battle of Ambrose and Walrus" and "Love, Speed and Thrills," both made in 1915. Besides these comedies, the two appeared together in a variety of other films, twenty-six all told, and they also appeared separately and/or together in films starring Mabel Normand, Charles Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle and most of the rest of the roster of Keystone players. He later took his Ambrose character with him to the now-obscure L-KO Kompany. Having already worked with Charles Chaplin at Keystone, Swain began working with Chaplin again at First National in 1921, appearing in The Idle Class, Pay Day and The Pilgrim. He is also remembered for his role as Big Jim McKay in the 1925 film The Gold Rush, for United Artists, written by and starring Chaplin.Swain died in Tacoma, Washington in 1935. For his contribution to the motion picture industry, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 1500 Vine Street. Chester Cooper Conklin (January 11, 1886 -- October 11, 1971) was an American comedian and actor. He appeared in over 280 films, about half of them in the silent era. After seeing several Mack Sennett comedies while in Venice, California during the 1913 winter break, the 27-year-old Conklin went to Keystone Studios, applied for a job and was hired as a Keystone Kop with a salary of $3 a day. Sennett directed him in his first film, a comedy short titled Hubby's Job. In 1914, Conklin co-starred with Mabel Normand in a series of films: Mabel's Strange Predicament, Mabel's New Job, Mabel's Busy Day and Mabel at the Wheel.[1] In that same year he appeared in Making a Living, in which Charlie Chaplin made his film debut. He would go on to make more than a dozen films with Chaplin while at Keystone and the two became lifelong friends. Years later, Conklin would perform with Chaplin in two more feature-length films, first in 1936 in Modern Times and in 1940's The Great Dictator. During this time, Chaplin kept Conklin on year-round salary. While at Keystone, Conklin became most famous when he was teamed up with the robust comic Mack Swain to make a series of comedies. With Swain as "Ambrose" and Conklin as the grand mustachioed "Walrus", they performed these roles in several films including The Battle of Ambrose and Walrus and Love, Speed and Thrills, both made in 1915. Beyond these "Ambrose & Walrus" comedies, the two appeared together in twenty-six different films. Mack Swain ... Ambrose (The Big) Chester Conklin ... Walrus (The Little) Vivian Edwards ... Dough and Dynamite (1914) - CHARLIE CHAPLIN & CHESTER CONKLIN - Mack Sennett
Chaplin & Conklin work as waiters at a restaurant where the cooks go on strike. When the two are forced to work as bakers, the striking cooks put dynamite in the dough. This film was one of several Chaplin comedies scheduled to be shown at the New York City Historical Society in September 2001. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in NYC, this film was pulled from the program because it ends with Charlie emerging from the rubble of a destroyed building. Released on October 26th, 1914 by Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0003863 CHANGE BEFORE GOING PRODUCTIONS: http://www.cbgp.com http://www.facebook.com/changebeforegoingproductions http://www.twitter.com/cbgproductions http://www.gplus.to/changebeforegoing http://www.pinterest.com/cbgproductions More classic silent films added daily to the channel. Gentlemen of Nerve-1914-Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand-A cute Keystone comedy short
"Gentlemen of Nerve", 1914, starring Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Chester Conklin (Walrus) and Mack Swain (Ambrose) is one of Charlie Chaplin's earliest directing efforts. Nothing truly new under the sun, perhaps, but GENTLEMEN OF NERVE still ranks among the more amusing Keystones Chaplin appeared in. One funny bit involves Mack trying to enter the raceway through a hole in a fence but gets stuck, only to get a policeman behind him at that very unpleasant moment. Chaplin is completely confident in his role as "the little fellow" by this time; though still far less lovable than in later films, his playful agility and facial expressions are worth the time for their own sake. It's also interesting to note that the crowds of people surrounding him in this film, many of whom have presumably turned up only to enjoy the auto-race, often seem to recognize Chaplin by this time, less than a year after he entered the medium of film. Such location shots in Chaplin's films would become less and less frequent through the next year and then disappear altogether, but while making GENTLEMEN OF NERVE, he still has to cope with the curious crowds while trying to be creative as a performer.
