Cumbria Constabulary and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner are focusing on tackling drink-fuelled crime and anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol. Thousands of people throughout Cumbria enjoy drinking alcohol responsibly. The alcohol industry creates employment and contributes to the social and economic environment of our communities. However, irresponsible use of alcohol by a minority can cause harm to individuals, families and communities leading to crime and anti-social behaviour. Today sees the launch of the Cumbria Constabulary Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy. The aim is to continue with the work to tackle problems associated with alcohol harm. Chief Constable Bernard Lawson said: "Alcohol harm can have a detrimental effect on our communities. Currently there is a vast amount of work already in place to tackle this issue but there is always room to improve. "The purpose of the strategy is to build upon the positive work that already exists within Cumbria. We aim to work closely with our partner agencies to achieve a reduction in alcohol related harm within the county. "Community policing is at the heart of Cumbria Constabulary and alcohol harm is an issue. Our aim is to reduce the number of incidents and improve the lives of those people alcohol affects in our communities." This week, each day, will focus on an area within Cumbria Constabulary where alcohol harm is being tackled. Focus will be on: • Public Protection Unit • Schools • Licensing • Breaking the cycle Assistant Chief Constable Jeremy Graham said: "The week will focus on a specific area to highlight the work that is already done to tackle alcohol harm within Cumbria. "Violent crime and anti-social behaviour are two main areas of concern. The work that is already undertaken helps to reduce the number of incidents. However, developing our work with our partner agencies will help us to be united in tackling the issue. "Our aim is not only to help reduce alcohol related incidents in our communities but also to help and support those people who are affected by alcohol. By working together we can continue to make Cumbria an even safer place to live, work and visit." Police and Crime Commissioner, Richard Rhodes said: "Alcohol can ruin lives and it is essential that people behave responsibly when consuming alcohol for their own and other people's safety. Alcohol is included in the Police and Crime Plan as a priority. I am pleased that the Constabulary are focusing on the prevention work related to alcohol.
