Theo Paphitis talks to Real Business "I've never had an original idea in my life."
"I've never had an original idea in my life. I just look at other people's ideas and execute them better," says Theo Paphitis, who started up his own business at 23 and is now chief executive of Ryman and an investor on the BBC TV series Dragons' Den. He talks to Real Business about rubber ducks, his bank manager and why he needed an "asbestos suit" to work in the football industry.

Theo Paphitis's Tips for Small Businesses
In today's current economic climate, we need more businesses to start up and be successful, but it can be tough. The reality is that many business people feel that they are on their own. Research from NatWest has revealed that a staggering third of entrepreneurs consider throwing in the towel in the early stages. Many entrepreneurs said they did not have the appropriate business building tools because they did not know where to start in setting these up. This is demonstrated by the 35% of small businesses surveyed saying they didn't have a business plan in their first year - a fundamental must have for new businesses. Of those small businesses surveyed 61% stated that cashflow was one of their most significant challenges in their first year of trading. More startlingly is the fact that 46% of small businesses didn't have a website in their first year, even though 45% believed it would have helped to increase their sales. NatWest are aware of the lack of support which small businesses receive and have created Smarta Business Builder, a one stop tool for all entrepreneurs looking to create a successful business and thrive in the current economic climate. Smarta Business Builder is backed by Theo Paphitis, star of BBC's Dragons' Den who understands that businesses need a supported start. Click HERE to watch Theo Paphitis give his tips on how to become a success. For more information visit www.natwest.com/smarta

Theo Paphitis Showreel
Born in Limassol Cyprus, Theos parents emigrated to England when he was six years old. He went to comprehensive school in North London which failed to diagnose his dyslexia but allowed him to establish and run the school tuck shop at the age of 15. Having secured his first full-time job as the tea boy/filing clerk at a traditional Lloyds insurance broker in the city, he quickly realised that his North London accent and schooling did not bode well for career progression. He doubled his salary by becoming a shop assistant at Watches of Switzerland where he found his passion for retail. With ambition snapping at his heels and a wife and child to support at the tender age of 18, he returned back to the insurance and finance industry at the age of 20 in a sales capacity. Here he discovered his natural ability of pointing out the obvious and applying common sense. This he translated into helping businesses in difficulty which he eventually made into a full time role for himself as principle. He has successfully turned Ryman, Contessa, La Senza and Partners the Stationers into successful, solid and profitable retail businesses. Theo now heads up a 350 store chain and a group turnover approaching £250m. Theos latest ventures includes Red Letter Days, the company he salvaged out of administration with fellow Dragons Den colleague, Peter Jones and the purchase of Stationery Box. Theo is married to Debbie, has five children and lives in Surrey.

QT: Theo Paphitis on economic crash buck passing (03May12)
Theo Paphitis on politicians passing the buck on who is to blame for the UK's economic crash. The answer is, ALL the politicians were to blame, they were (and still are) in hock to the crooked bankers, they all get "campaign contributions" and other backhand stuff to buy the correct laws for the bankers. Recorded from BBC1, Question Time, 03 May 2012.

THEO PAPHITIS LAUNCHES SCRAPPAGE SCHEME, URGING BOSSES TO REFIT, REDUCE AND RECOVER
Tuesday 20 October: Theo Paphitis is today calling on businesses to scrap outdated equipment and save millions on their energy bill. In a bid to reduce the C02 emissions produced by businesses every year, Joan Ruddock MP is launching the Carbon Trusts Big Business Refit to coincide with Energy Saving Week - which is giving out £100m interest-free to help small and medium companies modernise their businesses. According to new research released by the Carbon Trusts, British businesses are being forced to make do and mend with old, inefficient equipment, costing businesses £3.3bn a year in wasted energy. Hever Castle near Edenbridge in Kent, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, took out a £100000 Carbon Trust loan in 2007 to replace their motley collection of oil-fired boilers (that dated back to the early nineteen hundreds) and liquid petroleum gas-fuelled heating systems, replacing them with an 800-kilowatt biomass boiler. As a result, the company is now saving £50000 on their energy bills annually. The government endorsed initiative provides businesses with expert guidance, plus financial support in the form of £100m in interest free funding, which can be paid back through the energy savings the new equipment delivers. On average, businesses individually can save £14000 a year off their energy bills with a refit but this could rise to £120000 a year depending on the machinery replaced.
