Science on Screen creatively pairs area scientists with entertaining films.
Films in the series will be accompanied by lively talks from notable experts in the fields of science, technology and medicine.
Each film serves as a jumping off point for the speaker to share insights from scientific research or discuss technological advances in a way that engages popular audiences.
David Lynch wades through dark waters in his adaptation of Frank Herbert's cult science fiction novel. The story takes place in the year 10,191. The universe is governed through a system of feudal rule, presided over by Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. In the kingdom are two rival houses -- the House of Atreides and the House of Harkonnen. Each house is trying to gain dominion over the universe, but that dominion can only be gained by the house that controls the Spice, a special substance that permits the folding of time. The Spice is only available on the desert world of Arrakis, or Dune. Shaddam, tired of the feuding between the two houses, permits the Atreides to take over the Spice production on Dune, while secretly working with the Harkonnens to launch a sneak attack on the Atreides and destroy them.
Peter Turchin is one of the top cited authors in the field of Ecology/Environment. He is one of the founders of cliodynamics, the new scientific discipline located at the intersection of historical macrosociology, cliometrics, and mathematical modeling of social processes. Turchin developed an original theory explaining how large historical empires evolve by the mechanism of multilevel selection. His research on secular cycles has contributed to our understanding of the collapse of complex societies as has his re-interpretation of Ibn Khaldun's asabiyya notion as "collective solidarity". Turchin received his B.A. in biology from the New York University (cum laude) in 1980 and Ph.D. in zoology in 1985 from Duke University. Peter Turchin is a professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology as well as in the Department of Mathematics.

Did Islam Miss Out on Modernity? with Dr. Karim Douglas Crow
Conventional wisdom asserts that if Muslims had followed the rationalist lead of Ibn Rushd or Ibn Khaldun, not the mystic mode of thought advanced by Ghazālī, they would not have fallen into a dead end of superstitious religiosity which led them to lag behind Europe in terms of scientific–technological rationalism. We also frequently hear that ‘Arabic-Islamic philosophy’ failed to achieve normative validity within Islamic civilization – thereby Islam missed out on its possible Renaissance and retreated into medieval obscurity [e.g. Hans Küng]. (The only exception was the special privileging of philosophic activity linked with trans-rational metaphysics cultivated in Iranian culture; yet this also is being dismissed as a non-normative deviation from ‘authentic’ Arab Islam that privileges Sharī‘ah discourse.) These deflections allegedly brought about Islam’s marginalization, eclipsed by 18th century Enlightenment modernity. Muslims thus failed to ‘modernize’ by developing a technological mastery of natural forces and industry through cultivating independent reason and ‘science’.
Professor Crow pinpoints the fallacy of this widespread misconception arising from a misunderstanding of the unfolding and centrality of Islamic Rationality in religious & intellectual disciplines. He raises significant civilizational issues over its Eurocentric assumptions, as well as cultural and intellectual dilemmas of contemporary Muslims.

Weighing 72 grains of barley. The weight of the dinar is 1 mithqal
Currently, a grain is a unit of measurement of weight that is nominally based on the average mass of a seed of a cereal, wheat, barley, etc.
The grain was the legal foundation of traditional English weight systems, and is the only unit that is equal throughout the troy, avoirdupois, and apothecaries systems of mass.
The unit was based on the weight of a single grain of barley.
Since 1959, the grain or troy grain (symbol: gr) measure has been defined in terms of units of mass in the International System of Units as exactly 0,06479891 grams.
The abbreviation is "gr". The troy ounce is 480 grains.
The weight of the barley is used as reference since Antiquity.
For example, in ancient Moslem world, was used the mithqal as unit of mass, particularly for precious metals.
According Ibn Khaldun (15th century historian), the dinar (a gold coin) was considered to have the weight of one mithqal, which, was equivalent to seventy-two grains of barley.
On the other hand , the dirham (a silver coin) is that ten of which equal in weight seven mithqal of gold, so the weight of a dirham of silver equals 7/10 the weight of a dinar.
But, what are the weight of the mithqál in grams?
Let us see ... 4,76g ! That results in a 3.33 g dirham (7/10)
I have weighed as reference
- 2 euro cent
- 1 Maria Theresa thaler
- 1 dirham 342H Madinat Al-Zahra
- 1 dirham Wasit 121H
The current barley variety used is "Cassia" from KWS UK Ltd. . I want to thank the company for its cooperation, which has given free seeds for the experiment.
