It was produced by Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes ballet company and had its première in Paris on 29 May 1913. The music's innovative complex rhythmic structures, timbres, and use of dissonance have made it a seminal 20th century composition. In 1973, composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein said of one passage, "That page is sixty years old, but it's never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms...", and of the work as a whole, "...it's also got the best dissonances anyone ever thought up, and the best asymmetries and polytonalities and polyrhythms and whatever else you care to name." A performance of the work lasts about 33 minutes. Themes The Rite is divided into two parts with the following scenes (there are many different English translations of the original titles; the ones given are Stravinsky's preferred wording followed by the original French in parenthesis): Nicholas Roerich's 1913 set design for Part I: Adoration of the Earth. Patched (from 2 parts), trimmed and cleaned up (visually and sonically) version of something I found elsewhere. Anything for a more substantial Stravinsky tribute here. Not that this is the first IS presence in my videos - that privilege belongs to the "rock band" version of Petruskha in "Anime Cafe" (Parts 1 & 2). 'Additional material' wise, I've also got an old 3 hour documentary on Igor - in my old Beta collection (and many LPs and CDs). This is nice to watch - Stravinsky''s smaller works avoid the excesses of his major ones. Though I'm a fan of at least the majority of his colossal output. La historia de un Duendecillo de primavera y su Alce de compañero. Después de un invierno largo ella restaura la vida al bosque, pero por casualidad despierta el espíritu ardiente de destrucción (el Firebird o Pajaro de fuego) en un volcán cercano. Firebird procede en la destrucción del bosque y aparentemente del duendecillo. Ella es restaurada a la vida sin embargo la destrucción y la vida forestal son nacidas de nuevo con ella después de unos alentadores del Alce. La historia es considerada un ejercicio en el tema de deidades " el renacimiento de muerte de vida ". La animación está basada en el 18 de mayo de 1980 la erupción de Mt. St. Helens. El cuadro viviente final está cerca del análogo de la vista del cráter del volcán "Windy Ridge."
The story of a spring Sprite and her companion Elk. After a long winter she restores the life to the forest but accidentally awakes the fiery spirit of destruction (the namesake Firebird of the piece) in a nearby volcano. The Firebird proceeds in destroying the forest and seemingly the sprite. She is restored to life however after the destruction and the forest life is reborn with her after some encouraging from the Elk. The story is considered an exercise in the theme of life-death-rebirth deities. The animation is based on the May 18th, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The final tableau is a near analogue of the view of the volcano's crater from "Windy Ridge."

Paris 1913. Coco Chanel is infatuated with the rich and handsome Boy Capel, but she is also compelled by her work. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is about to be performed. The revolutionary dissonances of Igor's work parallel Coco's radical ideas. She wants to democratize women's fashion; he wants to redefine musical taste. Coco attends the scandalous first performance of The Rite in a chic white dress. The music and ballet are criticized as too modern, too foreign. Coco is moved but Igor is inconsolable. Paris 1920, Coco is newly wealthy and successful but grief-stricken after Boy's death in a car crash. Igor, following the Russian Revolution is now a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris. Coco is introduced to Igor by Diaghilev, impresario of the Ballets Russes. The attraction between them is instant and electric. Coco invites Igor along with his wife - now sick with consumption - together with his four children and a menagerie of birds to stay at her new villa, Bel Respiro, in Garches.
