Somewhere In Time (En algún lugar en el tiempo) fue lanzado el 29 de Junio de 1986 y rápidamente se notó un cambio bastante grande en este álbum respecto a los anteriores de Iron Maiden. La banda quería explorar nuevos caminos musicales (sin salirse del característico sonido de siempre) e introdujo el uso de sintetizadores. Muchos fans se vieron sorprendidos y rechazaron este nuevo sonido, aunque los sintetizadores no adquirían un protagonismo especial ni se cambiaba el estilo de las canciones. Fue muy importante la activa participación de Adrian Smith en la creación de este álbum ya que contribuye con uno de sus éxitos de más renombre, Wasted Years; tema caracterizado por su memorable intro, las dobles voces de su coro y su elaborado punteo. Pese a no tratarse de un disco conceptual, el álbum se ambienta en tiempos futuristas al estilo de la película "Blade Runner". Este hecho se observa en la tremendamente detallada portada del mismo. Una portada que contiene numerosas alusiones a otras canciones de la, hasta entonces, historia de Iron Maiden. Un disco lleno de muy buenos temas como "Sea of Madness","Heaven Can Wait", o la majestuosa "Alexander The Great". Disco un poco olvidado por Iron Maiden, pese a ser uno de los mejores albums creado por esta banda y con el mayor éxito en ventas (más de 2 millones 600 mil copias). "This is a very boring painting": Este mensaje se encuentra detrás de la pierna derecha de Eddie, sugún Derek, lo puso por que le llevo mucho tiempo hacer esa portada, y estaba aburrido de no poderla acabar -Ruskin Arms: Nombre del famoso pub donde tocaba Maiden en sus primeros años. -En el reloj aparece 23:58: Muy clara referencia a 2 Minutes To Midnight. -West Ham 7 Arsenal 3 :El west Ham es el equipo favorito de Harris, tambien conocidos como Irons. -Aces High Bar: Tambíen hay un avion volando, una referencia a Aces High -Batman: Nadie sabe realmente que quisieron decir con eso, pero se puede ver a batman sobre un edificio al centro de la imagen. -Live After Death y Blade Runner en la cartelera del cine: Referencia al anterior album en directo "Live After Death", y a la película de ciencia ficción de 1982 "Blade Runner" -The Philip K. Dick cinema : Nombre del autor de "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", en el que se basa la película "Blade Runner" -Marquee Club : Otro pub de los principios de la banda -Phantom Opera House: Referencia a "Phantom of the Opera", cancion del album IRON MAIDEN -Ancient Mariner Seafood Restaurant:se refiere a "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" -Herbert Ails: Escrito en el paso elevado, puede ser una referencia a Frank Herbert, autor de "Dune", quien no permitió a Maiden poner ese título a la cancion basada en esa novela, porque odiaba las bandas de metal, el tema finalmente se llamó "To Tame A Land" -Tonight Gypsy's Kiss: Escrito debajo de 23:58 (muy dificil de ver). Se refiere a la primer banda de Harris. -Long Beach Arena: Ahí se grabo Live After Death -Icaro cayendo: Icaro con sus alas quemandose, frente al Bradbury Hotel, referencia al tema "Flight Of Icarus" -Sombra de la muerte (Se ve una muerte con una hoz) :Símbolo que se encuentra en muchas otras portadas de Riggs. -Pirámides:Se encuentran 3, hasta atras del lado izquierdo, en referencia a Powerslave. -22 Acacia Avenue: Eddie se encuentra en está avenida, y tiene que ver con los temas "Charlotte The Harlot" y "22 Acacia Av.". The album presented the band moving further into progressive territory, as can be noted by the longer track lengths and complex arrangements in tracks like When the Wild Wind Blows and Starblind, while songs like El Dorado and The Alchemist provide a more traditional, familiar approach. In my eyes, The Final Frontier is a mixed bag. On one hand, this is easily the most ambitious, mature album the band has ever released, and the album provides a great testament to how much the group has grown over the years. When the Wild Wind Blows is one of the best tracks the band has ever released. It's somber, epic, and doesn't waste a second. It's easily up with Hallowed Be Thy Name as the best closer in their entire discography. On the other hand, the album can get too ambitious for its own good. Some songs like The Man Who Would Be King and Mother of Mercy feel like they drag on longer than needed, and they probably could've cut at least 15 minutes of material without losing much. Satellite 15 is the most unusual intro the band has ever done - a droning wall of noise from the guitars, with a repetitive drum pattern fitting the haunting vocals - but the repetition and droning atmosphere can come off as grating for fans of the band's classic 80s material. Bruce's voice is very noticeably giving out, and while he does an amazing job at keeping it up, there are some points where he really stretches for those high notes. The Final Frontier has many great ideas, and while the execution can come off as sloppy for some, there is enough good in this album to make it an exciting, worthwhile listen. It's an album that requires patience, and while it turns away many metal fans, including those fond of Maiden's older work, it's still one of the most intriguing and interesting albums to come out of the traditional metal genre in a long time. The band has already confirmed that this isn't their final album, but if ends up being so, I wouldn't mind this being the end of their legacy.- published: 26 Jan 2014
