Speaker: Professor Angus Deaton Recorded on 11 December 2014 in Old Theatre, Old Building. In lectures across three consecutive evenings (9 December, 10 December and 11 December) leading development economist Professor Deaton will discuss his work on health and poverty. Global poverty has been falling rapidly, even as income inequality has been inexorably rising in most of the world. Perhaps paradoxically, global income inequality has been falling. Or has it? Many claim not. Angus Deaton will discuss recent trends in poverty and inequality, nationally and internationally, and will ask why recent growth has brought such meagre reductions in poverty. He will also argue that measurement depends, not only on theory, but also on politics, and explain why and how the politics of poverty is so often disguised as science. The lectures will ask how we know what we know about poverty and inequality, discuss the many unresolved difficulties of measurement, and make proposals for improvement. Angus Deaton is Dwight D Eisenhower Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Economics Department at Princeton University.

http://www.vaticancatholic.com http://www.mostholyfamilymonastery.com This is a new video on an extremely important topic. It's a must-see for all who claim to be traditional or conservative Catholics. If one were to list the main reasons why some "traditionalists" still accept the Vatican II "popes" as true popes despite having problems with the Vatican II Church and the teaching of Vatican II, the idea that Vatican II was "not an infallible or binding council" would be at the top of the list. This a major issue. This video carefully examines the matter and completely refutes the false traditionalist position. In addition to discussing in detail the main aspects of the issue, the video contains numerous very important new points. The new points include quotes from John XXIII's opening speech at Vatican II that will certainly surprise or even shock false traditionalists who for years have been fed misinformation on this matter.

Fr. Gregory Hesse, S.T.D., J.C.D., S.T.L., J.C.L., Canon Lawyer, Doctor of Thomistic Theology, Lifelong Friend and Personal Secretary of Cardinal Stickler at the Vatican from 1986-1988 gives a no-nonsense, intelligent, learned, and witty exposition and explanation of relevant topics facing contemporary faithful Catholics. Fr. Hesse got to know approx. 45 cardinals while studying and working in Rome for 15 years and he has an uncanny and substantial knowledge of many things. You would be hard-pressed to find another theologian quite like him. A breath of fresh air in today’s widespread climate of many weak, ignorant, and naive clerics and theologians, he was affectionately called by several of his friends during his life “the bull in the china shop.” His example, testimony, and insights no doubt played and will play an important role in Catholic thought and development. Listen to find out why. You can download the free MP3 of this talk and all of Fr. Hesse’s talks to listen to on your computer or portable audio devices at the following URL: https://spideroak.com/browse/share/Hesse/Audio In this video, Fr. Hesse discusses actual Church teaching on papal infallibility and papal authority and dispels many misunderstandings and myths about papal infallibility that are commonly held by Catholic lay faithful and clerics nowadays. Fr. Hesse answers the question: How far are we obliged to follow a Pope? To answer this, we have to understand the true teaching of the Church on papal infalliblity, and even more importantly, on papal authority. Fr. Hesse covers these topics. He also discusses the very relevant and important question concerning the doctrine about the indefectibility of the Catholic Church [“Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)] and the historical examples in previous centuries and the present-day reality of materially heretical and bad Popes who poorly exercise their office, such as Pope Liberius, Pope Honorius, Pope John XXII, Pope Alexander VI, etc.

The Independent 2015-04-03Infallibility, from Latin origin ('in', not + 'fallere', to deceive), is a term with a variety of meanings related to knowing truth with certainty.
When a statement, teaching, or book is called 'infallible', this can mean any of the following:
When a person is called 'infallible', this can mean any of the following:
However, definitions of 'infallible' differ widely. In common speech, 'infallibility' can refer to a person (or a group of persons), to an act of teaching by these persons, or to the information being taught.
Furthermore, infallibility can refer to the both 'absence of error' or to the 'inability to err'. Although these definitions are similar, they are philosophically distinct; it is theoretically possible for a person to live their entire life without erring even though they had the ability (and potential) to do that. A person who never commits an immoral act or speaks a false sentence by choice would thus qualify for 'absence of error' without being qualified for 'inability to err'.
