Our Mission: 826 Seattle is a nonprofit writing and tutoring center dedicated to helping youth, ages 6 to 18, improve their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. At 826 Seattle, we believe significant learning happens with individual attention and that strong writing skills are essential for future success.

In The

Melat Assefa and Haddy Njie

starsMelat Assefa and Haddy Njiestars

Each year we hire a high school student who displays a passionate dedication to the 826 Seattle mission. Their job: to work as a youth mentor in the tutoring center and to lend a hand towards all things 826. They wear many hats during their time here. This year, however, the candidates were so spectacular that we hired both. Below is a short interview with each.

Pictured left: Meet Melat Assefa! Melat is a junior at Ballard, and has been coming to 826 Seattle for after school tutoring since our doors opened back when she was in fourth (yes, fourth!) grade! When she's not at 826, Melat can be found serving aces on a tennis court, or eating her favorite food, tomatoes.

Pictured right: Meet Haddy Njie! Haddy is a sophmore at Ingraham High School and has been a regular at the 826 Seattle evening high school tutoring program since it started last fall. When not at 826, she can be found reading science fiction at the park, particularly her favorite book, Ender's Game. Among her many secret skills, she is an avid knitter.

826 Seattle is a chapter of 826 National.
