Stories from the Frozen North: Point Hope
The small Alaskan community of Point Hope is one of the oldest continually occupied sites in North America. But life there may be about to change. In 2012, Shell hopes to start drilling in the Chukchi Sea just north of Point Hope, threatening the region's oceans and wildlife, and the Iñupiaq's culture and food supply.
Video by Will Rose and Kajsa Sjölander of 70°. Featured: Caroline Canon, tribal President of Point Hope, Steve Oomittuk, Point Hope City Mayor, and Lydia Nashookpuk, Point Hope resident.

Chapter 1 - When Your Whole Island is Sinking, What Do You Do?
The village of Kivalina sits on the tip of a six- to eight-mile-long barrier island – a quarter-mile at its widest – some 80 to 120 miles above the Arctic Circle between the Chukchi Sea and the Kivalina Lagoon in Alaska. It is home to about 400 Inupiat people and reachable only by plane and boat in the summer and plane and snowmobile in winter.
Meteorological data show that average temperatures are rising twice as fast in the Arctic region as elsewhere in the world. For Kivalina, this means that the once-thick layer of ice that formed every September on the Chukchi Sea, sheltering the island from fall storms, now forms later in the year and is becoming thinner, while the permafrost – the frozen ground under the surface – is melting.
Without a thick, protective layer of ice to protect Kivalina from the fall storms, the village's sea-facing shoreline erodes and storm surge-related flooding threatens its residents.
In 2009, a contractor built a $12 million rock seawall to slow the erosion, making Kivalina inhabitable for another 10 to 15 years, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates.

Synopsis:
Along the coast of the Bering Sea a community of whale hunters are struggling to survive keeping alive a millenary tradition. Surviving one of the most extreme environments of the planet.
Director's Statement:
I wanted to capture the millenary tradition of Chukchi whale hunters, their ability to survive using archaic hunting techniques forced by international Commissions. I wanted also to capture the hunting in all its splendor all its ritual with its inner times and cycles. I was interested in their survival and their feeding cycles I wanted to make a film on the food chain of a whale hunter, from the wintertime to the summer, from the fish to the seal to the whale. I wanted the film to be a sort of action film, without much dialogues a pure cinematic and visual experience. A film that captures the survival and determination of the worlds last whale hunters.

Things Fall Apart: Trailer
Kivalina, an Inupiat village located on a tiny barrier island off Arctic Alaska, is being swallowed by the ocean. With climate change, ice sheets that traditionally protected the island from crashing seas are fast melting, eroding this tiny piece of land. Disappearing ice also makes it difficult to hunt the seals, walruses, and bowhead whales on which the community depends for its survival. The village must move to safer ground, but the costs amount to hundreds of millions. With no other options, Kivalina has sued 24 major energy companies deemed responsible for global warming, to pay for the move. Things Fall Apart is Kivalina's story. The film received a Diamond Award of the 2012 California Film Awards

Combining geophysics and whaling knowledge to study sea ice
Oliver Dammann attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks Sea Ice Field Course in Barrow in May 2013 to develop field techniques for working on sea ice. Oliver is a PhD student at the UAF Geophysical Institute. He is measuring the depth of whaling trails on the Chukchi Sea and working with Barrow whalers to learn how they read the ice by looking at weather conditions, ice features, and many other factors. The project seeks a deeper understanding of sea ice through combining traditional knowledge with modern science. Read about the course at http://seaicecourse.gi.alaska.edu.- published: 07 Sep 2013
