Iraq - Iraqi Armed Forces clash with Militants in Anbar Province
In Anbar Province, Islamic extremists in league with al Qaeda have taken the city of Fallujah -- where U.S. forces fought a ferocious battle in 2004. The fight today is between the two main branches of the Islamic faith -- the Sunni and the Shia -- which are now at war with eachother. Last week, the Iraqi military went on the attack, firing at extremists who had overrun Mosques, jails and police stations in the main towns of Anbar, Fallujah and Ramadi. The insurgents are reported to still be in control of Fallujah. Armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades, they're battling local tribesmen, and the largely U.S. trained and equipped Iraqi army. The violence is a spillover from the savage civil war next door in Syria, where al Qaeda-linked militants have exported their cause and their men across the border. They're mostly Sunni Muslims who want to rule this part of the world, and impose hardline Shariah law. These days though, their main enemy is no longer the U.S. military- it's the millions of Shiite Muslims who live there, and the Shiite controlled government that rules Iraq. Over the past year, this religious conflict has grown. In the country America believed was headed for stable democracy, nearly 8,000 civilians were killed in 2013- a return to the kind of violence Iraqis haven't seen since the worst years of the war.- published: 10 Jan 2014

Iraqi Militants In Heavy Clashes With The Iraqi Army In Anbar Province
The Iraq government has lost control of the strategic city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, say officials and witnesses. Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city. An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Falluja. The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants. The White House, meanwhile, dismissed claims that the fighting, which has seen militants retake the city of Fallujah, was a result of President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw US troops. Two Iraqi Army soldiers were wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device exploded to the north of Babel province showing that the fighting is spreading over Iraq. "Unidentified gunmen emplaced a bomb nearby a security checkpoint, that belongs to the Iraqi Army/ 31st Brigade/ exploded at the entrance of Mussayib district of northern Hilla," noting that "The explosion of the IED resulted in wounding two soldiers of the security checkpoint.""The security forces blocked off the explosion area and transported the wounded soldiers to the hospital for treatment," The house of Fallujah Police Commander was detonated by gunmen on Monday. "The house of the Colonel Mohamed Allawi, the police commander of Fallujah Police Forces, was detonated by gunmen," noting that "The explosion resulted in huge material damages to the house.""The explosion did not cause any human causalities since the house was empty at the explosion time," Map of Falluja: http://adf.ly/bsdWJ Map of Ramadi: http://adf.ly/bsdcQ Like Our Facebook Page: http://on.fb.me/1h2gWju Subscribe To WarClashes: http://bit.ly/1jNCmDm- published: 13 Jan 2014

Iraqi army kills scores of militants in Anbar Province
Iraqi army kills scores of militants in Anbar Province
Iraqi armed forces have managed to kill scores of al-Qaeda-affiliated militants in the country's Anbar Province as the army continues its fight against terrorists, Press TV reports. According to the Iraqi Defense Ministry, the army forces carried out airstrikes on the Takfiri militants' bases in the western province of Anbar, killing scores of them. The Iraqi ministry also said the government troops had dismantled caches of ammunition in the violence-stricken province. Senior Iraqi lawmaker Abbas al-Bayati told Press TV, "We are fighting the al-Qaeda and the [al-Qaeda-affiliated] ISIL (so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) in the Anbar Province," adding that the terrorists are trying to form bases in the area. Over the past weeks, Anbar has been the scene of deadly fighting between Iraqi security forces and the al-Qaeda-linked ISIL militants. Violence erupted in Anbar on December 30, 2013, when the army removed an anti-government camp in the city of Ramadi. Iraqi authorities said the camp had been used as "headquarters for the leadership of al-Qaeda." The turmoil later spread to Fallujah and the militants moved in and seized the city as well as parts of Ramadi. On January 22, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on the residents of the Anbar Province to "take a stand" against the anti-government militants. Maliki has also blamed "diabolical" and "treacherous" Arab countries for the recent rise in violence in his country, saying, "Iraq is the target for some countries that are backing terrorism, and backing evil." In an address to the opening session of the Geneva II conference on the crisis in Syria on January 22, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the growing influence of al-Qaeda and other extremist militants in neighboring Syria is behind the violence in Iraq.- published: 24 Jan 2014
