David Blunkett's claims of Roma migrants causing riots in UK streets 'unhelpful and unproductive' David Blunkett's comments on Roma migrants causing riots in cities across Britain have been branded 'unhelpful' and 'not productive' by a lobby group director. The former home secretary had said that Roma youngsters were culturally different 'because they were living on the edge of woods and not going to school'. But Atul Hatwal, director of the Migration Matters Trust, told Metro that more needed to be done to integrate Roma into local communities. He said: 'Tensions are understandable when there is rapid change, and there is not enough done to bring communities together. What's more useful will be solutions. What is the way for Roma to be more integrated into the local community? 'It's one thing to acknowledge a problem but it's more productive to define the solution and that's what he hasn't done in his statement.' Yesterday, Mr Blunkett warned that an influx of Roma migrants could heighten racial tension and cause riots comparable with those between white Britons and Asian communities in 2001. The MP told BBC Radio Sheffield: 'Roma youngsters have come from a background which is actually even more different culturally because they were living on the edge of woods, not going to school, and not used to the norms of everyday life. 'You're right on the edge of understandable tensions because they are understandable. It's a cry for help from many people -- please, for goodness sake, put us back to at least the semblance that we had before. 'We saw this in Bradford, Burnley and Oldham all those years ago when I first became home secretary.' Dave Brown, head of Migration Yorkshire, conceded that some of Mr Blunkett's remarks could be seen as stereotyping Roma. However, he said he believed the MP for Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough was not criticising them. He told Metro: 'Mr Blunkett was just highlighting where there are issues in local areas and where the cultural differences are creating problems. 'I don't believe he is blaming Roma for this. His message is that despite the difficulties in a time of austerity, there is still work going on but councils are struggling without the resources. 'Some tensions are understandable, but some is because of a misperception that Roma are doing something wrong. If Roma people are outside your house late at night chatting, they are probably not doing something wrong, but it might make you uncomfortable. 'Roma communities are here to stay. The important thing with any community is that we integrate them. There's no point in hoping things will change.' Ukip leader Nigel Farage has warned the MP's concerns should be taken seriously. He said: 'Mr Blunkett should be admired for the courage he has shown by speaking so plainly on this issue. Of course the type of language he has used I would have been utterly condemned for using. 'My question is if [the government] won't listen to the dangers of opening the door to Romania and Bulgaria next year when Ukip speak out on it, will they listen to David Blunkett? I certainly hope so.

Stuart Gray has been confirmed as Sheffield Wednesday's new permanent boss after securing the Owls' progression into the FA Cup Fifth Round at Rochdale. Gray, who has been in caretaker charge since Dave Jones left at the end of November, has overseen an upturn in fortunes at Hillsborough. It has culminated in a timely FA Cup run for the three-time winners, with former AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu scoring the decisive goal for ten-man Wednesday at Spotland. Joe Mattock had opened the scoring on 51 minutes but was later sent off for a second bookable offence after Michael Rose halved the deficit on the hour mark for the League Two side. But Gray insists his future is clearer after midweek talks and he is delighted to see his side's name in the hat for the next round. "The contract has been going backwards and forward to the lawyers, but it just needs my signature on it now," said Gray. "Talks were finalised on Thursday, it's dragged on as such but the pleasing thing is that the players deserve all the credit as it's the players who have got me the job. You could see their commitment out there when we went down to ten men. "Before the game I was asking the foreign boys what does the FA Cup mean to them as it means so much to our British boys. Now they realise that as the atmosphere was fantastic." The Championship outfit took the lead six minutes after the break as Chris Maguire's in-swinging corner was helped in by Mattock among a melee of Dale defenders. Dale's failure to deal with another corner was to prove costly on 57 minutes as Mattock's delivery flashed across the area to the feet of Onyewu and the big man fired through a crowd of bodies. But the hosts poured forward and pulled one back as skipper Rose unleashed a right-footed strike beyond Martinez in the top corner before Mattock was handed a second yellow for a foul on Peter Vincenti. Rochdale boss Keith Hill said: "My players can leave with their head held high and I think the supporters can too. "It was an enormous task in the first place and I think Sheffield Wednesday gave us a lot of respect. "It was evens and we had chances in the first half, in the second they scored from two set plays but we responded well and got the goal, when they went down to ten men they defended superbly against our extra man." Sheffield Wednesday were back to winning ways at Hillsborough on New Year's Day against Blackpool. It was the perfect start to 2014, with goals after the break from Connor Wickham and Chris Maguire sealing the win for Wednesday, who climbed out of the bottom three. The victory and three points was exactly what the Owls deserved, having remained largely untroubled throughout the 90 minutes and producing arguably their best home display of the season. Following a 1.30pm pitch inspection, the game was given the go ahead by the match officials in the wet conditions at Hillsborough.
