President Obama's Trip to Burma (Myanmar): Aung San Suu Kyi, University of Yangon (2012)
The Obama administration initially continued longstanding American reticence in dealing with Burma after taking over in January 2009, preferring to prioritize broader security threats like Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Susan E. Rice, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, called the junta government's hold over Myanmar, known in the West as Burma, "one of the most intractable challenges for the global community". Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed that the Obama administration was "looking at what steps we might take that might influence the current Burmese government and...looking for ways that we could more effectively help the Burmese people", though she echoed Rice's pessimism in noting the junta's historical isolationism and disregard for economic sanctions. At the urging of Aung San Suu Kyi and the US's East Asian partners, the US held the first formal meetings with the junta in late in 2009. In November 2011, Obama spoke with Aung San Suu Kyi on the phone where they agreed to a visit by Secretary of State Clinton to Burma. Obama met with Burmese President Thein Sein at the Sixth East Asia Summit. Clinton made a two-day visit from December 1, 2011. Barack Obama visited Burma on November 18, 2012, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to do so. Obama also visited Aung San Suu Kyi in her home. Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC (born 19 June 1945) is a Burmese opposition politician and chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59% of the national votes and 81% (392 of 485) of the seats in Parliament. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 of the 21 years from 20 July 1989 until her most recent release on 13 November 2010, becoming one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. Suu Kyi received the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding by the government of India and the International Simón Bolívar Prize from the government of Venezuela. In 2007, the Government of Canada made her an honorary citizen of that country; at the time, she was one of only four people ever to receive the honour. In 2011, she was awarded the Wallenberg Medal. On 19 September 2012, Aung San Suu Kyi was also presented with the Congressional Gold Medal, which is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States. On 1 April 2012, her party, the National League for Democracy, announced that she was elected to the Pyithu Hluttaw, the lower house of the Burmese parliament, representing the constituency of Kawhmu; her party also won 43 of the 45 vacant seats in the lower house. The election results were confirmed by the official electoral commission the following day. Suu Kyi is the third child and only daughter of Aung San, considered to be the father of modern-day Burma. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_foreign_policy_of_the_Barack_Obama_administration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aung_San_Suu_Kyi- published: 27 Dec 2012

Pope Francis receives Aung San Suu Kyi in Vatican
Pope Francis on Monday received Burmese Nobel Peace Laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi in the Vatican, offering his support to her commitment towards democracy. The Burmese opposition leader, a former political prisoner in her country, is currently on a visit to Europe and on Sunday was made an honorary citizen of Rome. After the private meeting between Aung San Suu Kyi and Pope Francis, Vatican press office director, Father Federico Lombardi briefed journalists and described what he called "a great feeling of harmony and accord" between the Pope and this "symbolic figure of the Asian world". The themes touched upon during their cordial exchange included the culture of encounter and inter-religious dialogue. During the meeting, which took place in the Papal Library, Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for Aung San Suu Kyi's commitment towards democracy in her country, and assured her of the Church's support towards this cause. But he specified that no kind of discrimination is expressed by the Church which is at the service of all with its charitable works. Father Lombardi also recalled the Pope's attention towards the Asian continent and his desire to visit it. Suu Kyi has become an international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of oppression. She has spent most of the last two decades in some form of detention because of her efforts to bring democracy to military-ruled Burma. She was re-elected to parliament in 2012.Suu Kyi received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and earlier was awarded the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990. Bahraini court refuses to release prominent Shia activist
Bahraini court refuses to release prominent Shia activist
A court in Bahrain has refused to free top Shia activist, Nabeel Rajab, saying he is not eligible for early release from prison. Rajab was arrested after the Al Khalifa regime launched a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011. The prominent activist, who heads the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, was imprisoned for participating in "unauthorized" protests. Rajab's sentence was later reduced on appeal to two years from an initial three-year term. Lawyers and right groups say he was eligible for early release late in November. "The court rejected the request made by a group of lawyers who argue that the activist is eligible for an early release after serving three quarters of his sentence," said a judicial source. His release has been also called for by Amnesty International which has said in a newly-released statement that on Friday November 29, the senior activist has served "three-quarters of his two-year sentence and will become legally eligible for release." On November 30, the US-based Human Rights First organization denounced Rajab's detention, saying, "It's depressing but no big surprise that Nabeel Rajab was not released. Recent weeks have seen an increased targeting of human rights defenders by the authorities and freeing him would have gone against that trend." In September, Rajab won Norway's Rafto Prize for rights defenders along with the other Bahraini human rights activist, Abdul Hadi al-Khawaja, who is serving a life sentence in jail in the Persia Gulf monarchy. Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have staged numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates invaded the country to assist the Bahraini government in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters. According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and hundreds arrested. Physicians for Human Rights says doctors and nurses have been detained, tortured, or disappeared because they have "evidence of atrocities committed by the authorities, security forces, and riot police" in the crackdown on anti-government protesters.- published: 03 Dec 2013
