Iraqi Security Forces Fighting Militants In Falluja And Ramadi, Anbar Province
Fighting is raging between al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq's security forces for control of two key cities in the embattled Anbar province, even as a deal was in place with Sunni tribesmen to fight alongside Iraqi police against the militant group. The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi. The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008. Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings. Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja. "We call you to join us in our fight against the government of Nuri al-Maliki," one of the gunman said through a bullhorn. Authorities say gunmen have attacked an Iraqi army barracks north of Baghdad, killing 12 soldiers meaning that the militant attacks are spreading beyond Anbar. Human rights activists have condemned abuses by both government troops and insurgents in Iraq's Anbar province. "Apparently unlawful methods of fighting by all sides have caused civilian casualties," Human Rights Watch said in a report. The rights group criticised Iraqi forces and militants for carrying out attacks in residential areas. It comes as troops prepare to launch a major assault against al-Qaeda-linked militants in the city of Falluja. Iraqi Militants In Heavy Clashes With The Iraqi Army In Anbar Province
The Iraq government has lost control of the strategic city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, say officials and witnesses. Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city. An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Falluja. The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants. The White House, meanwhile, dismissed claims that the fighting, which has seen militants retake the city of Fallujah, was a result of President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw US troops. Two Iraqi Army soldiers were wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device exploded to the north of Babel province showing that the fighting is spreading over Iraq. "Unidentified gunmen emplaced a bomb nearby a security checkpoint, that belongs to the Iraqi Army/ 31st Brigade/ exploded at the entrance of Mussayib district of northern Hilla," noting that "The explosion of the IED resulted in wounding two soldiers of the security checkpoint.""The security forces blocked off the explosion area and transported the wounded soldiers to the hospital for treatment," The house of Fallujah Police Commander was detonated by gunmen on Monday. "The house of the Colonel Mohamed Allawi, the police commander of Fallujah Police Forces, was detonated by gunmen," noting that "The explosion resulted in huge material damages to the house.""The explosion did not cause any human causalities since the house was empty at the explosion time," Map of Falluja: http://adf.ly/bsdWJ Map of Ramadi: http://adf.ly/bsdcQ Like Our Facebook Page: http://on.fb.me/1h2gWju Subscribe To WarClashes: http://bit.ly/1jNCmDm- published: 13 Jan 2014

Iraqi air force strikes al-Qaeda-linked militants in Anbar Province
Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn Ahead of a possible assault on the city of Fallujah, Iraqi government forces battling an al-Qaeda offensive near the Syrian border have launched air strikes on suspected militant locations in Anbar Province. Government officials in western Anbar have also recently met with tribal leaders to urge them to help repel the militants, who have taken over parts of Ramadi and Fallujah, strategic cities on the Euphrates River. Al-Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and ISIL have been steadily tightening their grip in Anbar in recent months, in a bid to create a Sunni Muslim state. But last week's capture of positions in Ramadi and large parts of Fallujah was the first time in years Sunni insurgents have taken ground in the province's major cities, and actually held the positions for days. In Fallujah, ISIL's task has been made easier by disgruntled tribesmen who have joined its fight against the government. Thousands of people who live in Fallujah have fled the city. However, on Thursday morning, there were some reports claiming the situation has stabalised, accompanied by calls for residents to return home. Report by Mark Morris. A suicide bomber has killed at least 15 people in a separate incident north east of Baghdad. In the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi jihadist militants have posted videos of themselves burning government vehicles and setting up checkpoints. Their action is seen as a direct challenge to the authority of the Shia Prime MInister, Nuri al-Malaki. "The military operations in Anbar have political goals to achieve. Al-Maliki wants to achieve security and so make political gains in the province, but at the same time he doesn't want to present gifts to the Sunni politicians that he has always accused of being involved with terrorism," said Ali al-Sari a political commentator. The air strikes come on the back of operations in December including one codenamed "Iron Hammer" which was launched after at least 18 soldiers including a commander were killed by militants.
